Fetching
Reed walked into the living room, checking his belt. He was fairly sure he had everything. He just needed to find Venn.
He looked up from his belt and stopped dead in his tracks. His blood ran cold. The ghost in the living room wasn't who he expected. It was the ghost of his father.
His father stood close to the coffee table, where Venn's source sat. He looked up at Reed and smiled. "Oh good. I thought you'd forgotten about me."
The voice sent a shiver down Reed's spine. He drew his rapier. "I could never forget about you," he said coldly.
His father blinked, confusion flashing across his face. "Reed, is something wrong?"
Reed scowled and stepped forward, pointing his rapier at the ghost. "Oh something is wrong alright. You can't just show up and pretend everything is fine and dandy after all this time."
The ghost's eyes flashed with panic. "What is wrong with you? Reed, it's-"
"Wrong with ME?" Reed snapped. "There's nothing wrong with me. You're the one who hurt my mom and left us, Dad. Where did you even go? Now you show up pretending everything is fine? No. I won't stand for it."
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold up. What are you seeing? Because I'm definitely not your padre. Sure you aren't going a little pazzo on me?" The ghost tilted his head and gazed at Reed with dark, concerned eyes. The eyes were like endless pits of darkness on his face.
Reed lowered his rapier. "Venn? What on earth are you doing?"
"What am I doing? You almost attacked me! What were you doing?"
"You look like my dad!"
Silence filled the room. The ghost stood there looking confused for a minute before he looked down at himself. "I see me..." he looked up at Reed. "Hold still."
Reed sheathed his rapier and watched as the ghost stepped closer. The ghost moved so close Reed could feel the cold radiating from it. It's midnight black eyes stared directly into Reed's. A moment later, it flickered and shifted into the lean, pale boy Reed knew so well.
Venn smirked. "Oh I can have so much fun with this."
"Well hey, we know you're a fetch now. Just please, dont ever do that to me again," Reed let out a long breath.
Venn's smirk vanished and he stepped away from Reed. "Sorry... what did your dad do to get... that reaction?"
Reed went to the coffee table and picked up the icy silver pocketwatch. He didnt look at Venn. "I'll tell you another time. After this case."
Venn didn't argue. When Reed turned, he was gone. Reed sighed quietly and started for the door. Venn did this quite often. He would vanish right after Reed finished saying something but wasn't looking. He wouldn't see Venn again until they were someplace dark.
Best to keep moving. No time to dawdle.
