Chapter Twenty Seven: Cookies!

Song you should listen to: Lucky.

"Morning kids!" Mrs. Cassie sang, descending the staircase with Mrs. Kenzie on her heels.

"What'd we miss?" Mrs. Kenzie asked, walking over to us. As Garret opened his mouth, she cut in, "That's not important. What is important, is that I brought some cookie mix, and I want cookies."

Mrs. Cassie perked up. "Cookies?"

"Yes," Mrs. Kenzie said. "Aiden, you're the cook. Now choose your assistant wisely, because these better be good. They were two dollars."

"Yes m'aam," Aiden said. Then he turned to me. "Caroline? Ready to give the pasta another try?"

My face lit up. "You had me at 'cookies'."

And that's how, a couple minutes later, Aiden and I ended up at the kitchen counter, staring down at the various tools and instructions spread out before us, dumbfounded.

We stared a bit longer.

Then I turned to Aiden. "You're the chef."

He continued looking. "Yeah, the chef. Not the engineer."

"Come on," I scoffed. "It can't be that hard."

I reached for the instructions and scanned the page. "I give up."

This time he was the one who scoffed, and he pushed me aside, grabbing the instructions.

"Bring me a bowl and a measuring cup," He ordered.

I saluted, and began reaching under the sink and looking for bowls.

I found a measuring cup instead, and got the bowl from a cabinet.

I placed both on the counter, and Aiden emptied the mix into them.

I took out some eggs and cracked them, as Aiden poured in a cup of water.

We mixed, and then came the fun part vigorously, and my arms began aching from the effort.

Then, the fun part arrived.

"Yay!" I grinned, "I love shaping them!"

"It looks like there's enough batter for us to each make four big ones," he said, going to retrieve cookie cutters.

I held out a hand to stop him.

"I don't cut corners," I said. "Especially not with cookie cutters. Let's make the shapes ourselves!"

"Let's have a competition!" Aiden grinned, "Winner takes all."

"All of what?"

"Hmmmmm..." He thought. "Ok, if I win, I want a back massage."

"And if I win, I want to make a secret handshake," I decided.

Aiden instantly wrinkled his nose. "Ewww. I'm a man."

I snorted. "A man who has tiara pajamas."

"They were from my mom!" He protested.

"Mommy's little princess?" I teased.

He sniffed, his nose in the air, "Yes, actually."

I rolled my eyes, and then rolled up my sleeves. Time to get to work.

I prepared my counter space with flour, and rolled out my dough.

My tongue stuck out of the corner of my mouth as I worked hard on my first one, cutting and flattening and rolling and pinching.

Until finally, I was finished.

As I held up my masterpiece with pride, Aiden burst out laughing. "What is that?"

"Guess," I told him.

He furrowed his brow. "A cloud?"

"Close. A baby duck!" I beamed.

He scrunched up his nose.

Please! His can't be any better.

I stepped on my tip toes and peered over his shoulder to see a beautifully cut rose cookie.

That's not fair! He was a chef!

And at that point, I knew I had to do something.

When he wasn't looking, I switched Aiden's sugar for salt.

I returned to my work, smiling softly.

I shaped a cookie of me next, and then one of Aiden. However, when I went to show him, he sniffed, and said, "That's offensive."

I rolled my eyes and flattened the Aiden cookie back out to start again. And I have to say, flattening the cookie into a thin sheet and then ripping it apart was oddly satisfying.

We finished, and put our cookies in the oven. Then,  I brushed my hands together, ready for victory.

Suddenly, something amazing happened.

A new song came on the radio, and my eyes widened.

"THIS IS MY OTHER SONG!" Aiden and I yelled at the same time. Then we looked at each other in surprise.

"You're kidding!" Aiden exclaimed.

"No, I love this song!" I grinned.

He smiled, and began walking around to my other side. "Do you hear me? I'm talking to you, across the water, across the deep, blue ocean, under the open sky, oh my, baby I'm trying."

My jaw nearly fell open at the sound of his voice. When he wasn't belting, he sounded beautiful.

But then again, so did I.

"Boy I hear you, in my dreams," I played along, tucking my hands behind my back and walking innocently by. "I feel your whisper, across the sea."

After I passed him, I spun around to face him with a hand on my heart dramatically. "I keep you with me, in my heart. You make it easier when life gets hard."

Then he grabbed my hand and spun me around, and spun me into him. "Lucky I'm in love with my best friend, lucky to have been where I have been, lucky to be coming home again," we sang.

He placed a hand on my waist and I rested mine on his shoulder, and our hands were held in front of us, and we began to waltz badly. "OoooOoooOoOoooooooooooo."

Then, being me, I tripped over his foot and almost plummeted to the ground, but Aiden had his hand on my waist, and steadied me.

Then, the song sort of fell into the background as I noticed how beautiful his green eyes were. Like moss.

Ugh, focus on the dance number!

He looked at me too, and gulped nervously.

As if being pulled forward, he began to lean into me. I stilled, and had just begun to lean in too when the oven beeped, making us jump apart.

Then we looked at each other, and he rubbed his neck awkwardly.

"The cookies?" I asked, looking at the oven.

He rushed to get them out, and the song changed to a less sentimental one.

I tossed Aiden a pink oven mitt, and he slid it on, pulling out the tray.

When he put them down to cool, I frowned. My cookies melted into round pools. They just looked like uneven circles.

Whereas, Aiden's of course looked like a masterpiece. What gives?

"Cheater!" I pointed an accusing finger at him. "What did you do? Replace your cookies with these store bought ones at the last minute?"

"No!" He protested. "But I'm flattered you think so."

"Whatever," I scowled. "I'm still going to crush your behind."

He smirked evilly. "We'll see about that."

As he left to get his mom and Mrs. Cassie, I knew I had to act fast.

So I grabbed Aiden's best looking cookie, his rose, and ate it.

When they got back down, Aiden smiled and swept a hand towards the cookie tray.

"The moment of truth," Aiden said, watching Mrs. Cassie and Kenzie Analyze our cookies.

Then he noticed his rose was gone.

"YOU ATE MY COOKIE!" He shouted in anger.

"PROVE IT!" I yelled back.

"You both sound like children," Mrs. Cassie complained. "Shut up and let us judge."

They put their heads to together literally, and thought.

Finally, they held one up.

And it wasn't mine.

"YES!" Aiden jumped up in the air and fist pumped.

I scowled and crossed my arms. "Rigged. Wait till you taste them."

They did, and immediately spit them back out.

Aiden gaped at them in astonishment, and then took a cookie for himself.

After biting he gagged, and his face contorted. "CAROLINE!!"
