Life and Death
"Death?" Life asked as he sat next to Death, the grass growing vibrant by his touch.
"Why do people fear you?"
Death looked away and down at the world he and Life worked so hard to make.
"Because people fear what they do not know and love what they believe. You are a gorgeous lie, and I am the hideous truth. Even as we speak, you have created thousands of lives. And they all died, just now, having lived to their 'full' potential. People fear me because they want to believe that I am a demon. That I am here for nothing but annihilation," Death sighed and rolled up his sleeve to show the strings of fate, breaking one by one.
"They fear me because they don't know what I can do," he sadly said.
"Why am I a lie?" Life asked as he grew a small flower. He didn't sound angry, just curious. Death rolled his sleeve back down and took off his hood.
"Because you lead people to believe that there is something wonderful and joyous about you. Like... if you make it to the end, there's a great surprise waiting. You fool them into thinking that it's all okay, it's all going to be okay, but it's not. One of these days, I'm going to take over and you will be gone, do you realize that? I'm the villain and you're the hero," Death explained. "Look at you, you're always changing and I always stay the same. Don't you realize that I am the one left with the burden of those souls? Don't you realize that I will always be the bad guy?" Death insisted. Life reassuringly put his hand on Death's shoulder.
"You're not the bad guy. Sure, you can come off as a little scary but I can too. I'm the one who throws all those awful occurrences into life. I'm the one who keeps children starving, I'm the one who emotionally traumatized people, for my own pleasure. You save those people from having to endure any more of my wrath because guess what, Death?" Life asked as he smiled wickedly smiled "I'm the bad guy, Death. I create lives only to ruin them because it's fun. Because I enjoy doing it. And you're right, I am always changing. Sometimes I have my good days, and sometimes I have my bad. Your job is simple, easy, and, quite frankly, fun. Mine is a pain. It's aggravating and unamusing. The reason I asked why people feared you is for one simple reason," Life stood up and glared into the world he created.
"And what reason would that be?" Death hesitantly asked. Life glanced over his shoulder to look back at Death.
"Because I want to know why they don't fear me."
