The Museum

Lilyane, at age sixteen, made a very stupid mistake. She had accepted a dare from her friends. And they aren't the good kind of friends, mind you, they are the kind of friends do stupid and reckless stuff all the time. Lily wasn't stupid, but was simply lonely and wanted some friends, so Lily was just sucked right in.

But one day, when they where in the park just moping around, they spied the museum a couple of buildings down.

"Hey Lily, I dare you to sneak in the museum and spend the entire night," Kyle, the gang's leader, said to her sarcastically, laughing afterwards.

"Yea," Tina snickered, "Lenny, what do you think?"

"Oh, yea that's a great idea," Lenny agreed.

"So, do you accept or are you chicken?" Kyle asked Lily, nudging her in the ribs, looking at her with a sharp and demanding smile.

"Well.." Lily started, she thought about it. She didn't want her friends to see her as a wimp, and always pick at her about it. They'd be disappointed, maybe even forget her... It was only one night after all, and could sleep in the rainforest exhibit, it wasn't so scary there.

As if reading Lilys mind Kyle added, "Oh, and you gotta spend the night specifically in the Egyptian exhibit."

She thought on this again, her thoughts spinning. The exhibits weren't real, she had seen them before, it wouldn't be to bad. Just statues and figurines. So she accepted the dare.

"Fine, I'll do it," she said to Kyle. "Just as long as you guys go in with me when I go in to hide."

"Sure thing," he said with a sly look.

They stood in front of the museum, looking at the clock that was on the front of the building. It read 5:26, with meant it closed in 34 minutes.

Lily had packed a backpack, with a few snacks, water, a flashlight, a small blanket and a book. They planned to go in, with Lily shadowing behind them so she wouldn't be seen. Then she would duck into the bathroom and hide in a stall till the museum closed, then head to the Egyptian exhibit.

The plan worked even better when she went into the bathroom and saw a sign on the furthest stall, reading, "broken, do not use." With some effort she pried open the door, that had been seemingly bent in, and wedged it closed, doing her best to lock it.

She closed the toilet seat lid and sat on it, pulling her feet up so if anyone came in, they couldn't be seen from under the door.

After a short while, she heard a man's voice coming from right outside the bathroom, "Hey I did a check atound the museum, I just have do this bathroom, then I'm done and we can leave."

His footsteps echoed as he came into the bathroom and checked the stalls. He stopped when he came to Lily's. He pulled on the door, but since it was locked, and bent, it didn't open.

Lilly's heart was pounding in her chest so loud she was certain the guard could hear it. After a few minutes of torture, and the guard being so close to finding her, he muttered something about it being a waste of time, that no one would hide in a broken stall, he left the bathroom.

"Hey, I checked the bathroom, it's all clear," he said loudly to the other person.

She heard both their footsteps going out the door, and the jangle of keys locking the front doors. She relaxed, and put her feet down on the floor. Waiting a good ten minutes to make sure everyone was gone, or that they didn't come back, she pushed opened the door and stepped out of the stall. She grabbed her backpack and put it on, walking to the main desk and grabbed a map. Looking at it as she walked, she navigated her way through the halls to the Egyptian exhibit.

When she stepped into the Egyptian exhibit room and clicked on her flashlight, she immediately felt regret. It was colder, and it had a overall demeaning and unsettling feeling. The eyes on the statues seemed to be boring into her skin and following her as she moved. She saw a sarcophagus, probably with a mummy onside, but tried not to look at it.

She started to reconsider the dare, but, she had accepted it, and there was no way she could get out now, so she shrugged off her backpack and spread out her blanket. As she sat down she thought she heard a scraping noise. Looking around, nothing was there, so she concluded it was her imagination. It was pretty freaky, being so quiet. She closed her eyes and tried to rock herself to sleep.

In her dream, she was in the Egyptian exhibit, but her vision was kind of blurry, and her hearing was hazy. She heard loud scraping noises that seemed to echo all around her, and a loud clanging crash as something stone hit the floor. A misty odor burned her nose as it hit her nostrils. She tried looking around but dust went into her eyes and her lungs, she couldn't breath.

Sitting up with a start, coughing, she snatched her flashlight. It was still on and she immediately turned and shone the beam on the sarcophagus. The lid was off. A pungent smell hit her nose. Her dream, it was real, she realized with sheer horror.

Scrambling to her feet she frantically shone the flashlight around the room, and saw the mummy standing in front of the exhibit hall doors, mere 5 feet away. Her hands began to sweat and they shook, the flashlight slipping out of them fallinb to floor with a clatter, the beam bouncing off the walks before it stilled to shine, stretched across the floor. She screamed, the sounds echoing off the walls. It scarcely smiled, and began walking towards Lily. Then it sped up, surprisingly fast, it being able to function its body like it was still alive.

Lily screamed again, running towards the door, trying to avoid it. But it caught her arm. She shrieked as it dug at her arm, leaving long bloody claw marks. Wrenching out of its grasp, she ran, clutching her arm, remembering by memory of where the exit was. She stumbled, barely able to see with so little moonlight shining from windows through the exhibits. She could hear the mummy behind her, running almost silently, but it's breath coming out raspy.

Running past the ancient Roman exhibit, she heard shattering glass, and a moment later, a spear flew past her, just missing her leg. A second later, a small dagger hit the mark, burying in the back of her leg. She crippled, knowing it might catch up with her if she didn't move soon. Sliding behind a bench, she ripped the dagger out. It wasn't to deep, but it still hurt immensely. It began bleeding profusely, and she fought to not make a sound, her teeth clenched and tears edging out of her eyes.

Peering out from behind the bench, she saw the front doors. Making a dash for them, ignoring the seering pain in her leg and arm, she grasped the door handles and twisted. Locked. Looking behind her she saw it, the mummy smiling at her, holding the bloody dagger in one hand and the spear in the other. She broke into a cold sweat, and frantically looking around, she noticed big windows next to the doors. She ran to one, and pounded with all her might on it. She heard a cackle behind her and saw the mummy advancing. With one final blow, the window shattered, sending her toppling headfirst out into a bush. Jumping out of it quickly, and the dagger, as if being tossed, dropped limply to the ground next to her. Looking back into the museum, she saw the mummy, sinking back into the hallway shadows with one glint of its eyes.
