Prompt

Jarred walked back up the road through the woods. He was frowning, his hands in his pockets as his camera thumped aginst his leg with each step he took. He almost stumbled over something, and out of anger and surprisment, he cursed, and kicked it. It was around midnight, making it almost pitch black except for the few lucky moonlight rays that managed to pierce through the trees.

He finally took his flashlight out, clicking it on and shining it ahead of him. He was startled when the ray shone on a man walking towards him. Around 20 Jarred guessed. He was wearing black jeans, a dark red shirt with a black and red plaid jacket open at the front, and the sleeves rolled once up on the arms. His dark hair was neatly combed to the side, standing out against his pale skin. His dark eyes were looking down, and the corners of his mouth was slightly turned up, forming a small smile on his thin lips. Jarrod wasn't sure what to think, until the man looked up and spoke. He had a slight accent, one Jarrod wasn't sure where it was from.

"Hello, what are you doing out here this time of night?" He looked at Jarred, his eyes surprisingly sharp, making him feel comfortable, maybe a bit scared, but just for a moment.

Jarrod reached the man, stopping about two feet away. "Just... exploring," he said, slightly embarrassed.

"What could you possibly be exploring now?" The man asked.

"This might sound stupid," Jarrod said, hesitating.

"I've heard plenty of ridiculous things," the man said, putting his hands in his pockets, a gesture that he was listening.

"Alright, don't laugh or anything, " Jarred said.

"I won't," the man said seriously.

Jarred nodded, "So I was reading the newspaper, and there was this one article. It was about monsters. Ok, before anything else, I should say I think there's a good chance monsters might be real." He paused, seeing the man nodding slightly.

"The article challenged us to find one. I didn't think until tonight that they, a corporation, hadn't even found one. I thought it might be easy. Go in the woods at night, be quiet, and spot something. Right? I mean they'd be pretty obvious." Jarred ended, looking at the man.

"I agree." He said simply. "They could be out there." He took his hands out of his pockets, gestering with a hand to the woods beside him. "But what do you think a monster looks like?" He asked.

Jarred stopped to think a moment. "Well, something big, has claws or fur or something," he responded.

"Interesting," the man responded.

Jarred thought about what he said, realizing how ridiculous he had just sounded. "Gosh," he said. "That sounded stupid. I was just fooling around. There's probably no such thing."

"Don't say that." The man said smoothly. "What if they just aren't found so easily? They probably don't want to be found. What if one is standing right here, now, in front of you?" The man smiled at him. An almost malicious smile, but happy at the same time. Jarred stopped a moment, with alarm looking the man up and down. Now puzzled he thought about it. Then he laughed.

"Of course not! You aren't a monster. I can see that." He laughed once more, a little more nervously, but not consciously knowing why. The man let out a laugh to.

"Well, good night. Thanks for talking." Jarred said, turning and waving as he walked away. The man stood still, waving once, watching Jarred go.

Jarred started to think about the man, wondering why he was out in the forest, without any light, at this time, his puzzling smile and discomforting environment, the comments he had made, but he dismissed it all. It was a crazy night and he was tired. He kept walking for home.

So pikadash here. I got this idea from my friends Reject_Elephant prompt book. I had fun writing it, and I hope you like it to.  This was the prompt by the way; 'people think monsters are easy to find, but people don't know the first thing about monsters.'
