Chapter 9: Shapeshifter Territory

Jett's POV
The light grew more and more intense as day stole over, and by midday it had grown so uncomfortable that I began lagging behind even Winter, who was panting for breath as the heat increased. I almost fell over a small stump, which had been hidden amongst some shrubbery that grew around it thickly. Grabbing onto the side of a tree, I was forced to do a sort of awkard, embarrassing manoeuvre, but was glad of the shade it gave. It was the middle of summer, the hottest time all year, and I am very glad I wasn't at the desert right now. Imagine all that reflective sand! It gets hot enough to bake cakes on!

"I blame that on all this damn light." I said as Calypso laughed slightly.

"Someone turn off the freaking sun!" Winter groaned, fanning herself so violently that her hands were a blur, and removing her earmuffs. "I... Am... MELTING."

"Literally?" Calypso looked a little alarmed.

"No. NOT YET." She added ominously, glowering at Freeze. "Can't you just teleport us?" She demanded for about the fifth time. The Ender being sighed, flicking her blue-tipped bangs out of her face. She had unzipped her hoodie, revealing a white shirt underneath, but otherwise made no attempt at all to escape the intense heat. But then, it could be just Winter and I suffering from this. Everyone else seems fine. Minecraftia's summers aren't that hot, I guess.

"I think you're beginning to have a bad habit of taking advantage of my powers." She said curtly.

"Well, duh." Calypso interjected. "You're an Ender. Teleporting is sorta, uh, how do I put this, what you do."

"That is not my only quality," she replied sharply.

"It would quicken the journey..." Kari said slowly as if afraid of angering her even more. She waved a hand irritably as if dismissing all other arguments against her.

"Alright, alright. But ONLY because some of you (she slanted her mismatched eyes at Winter, who ignored her) are annoying the nether out of me. And because it's the middle of Summer, mainly."

"Thanks!" Winter looked very relieved suddenly, pausing in her frantic fanning.

"Don't make me do it TOO often." Freeze replied with the smallest hint of a smile. "It is not the pain that scares me. It's just that if you rely on me too much, if I was not available, you would be completely lost. And also, it's annoying." She ended flatly, but with a tiny smirk to signify she was partially kidding, though she was serious about what she had just said.

"Okay, okay, we'll use your power responsibly and all that, can we get out of all this light?" I cut in.

"Well, for a remote little village, Kascnov has a pretty good security system to keep out Enderman and glitches like yours truly from teleporting anywhere near it. There is a jungle after the desert, which is the closest point I can bring you to." She explained. "We take a short break, and we go, okay?" We all nodded, me sinking into a seat with a shallow sigh of relief, and she turned to Bren.

"Will you be fine in a jungle? It's pretty thick and easily flammable, so..." He looked embarrassed, and flushed bright red.

"Yeah, I'll be fine. I only flame up when surprised, and yeah..." He broke off. She responded with a small reassuring smile.

"Hey, glitches and bugs are nothing to be ashamed of." She shrugged. "I've had experiences with out of control fire before as well, and they can be sorted easily with one of these bad boys." She indicated towards a crested silver gauntlet with Ender symbols carved into it. She only had it on one hand, giving people the impression she had a cast on or something.

"Uh, aren't you an Ender?" Kari asked curiously.

"Yeah, but not just ANY Ender." With a casual flourishing gesture from her armoured hand, she extended an arm and a violet ball of fire flickered in the palm of her hand, floating an inch or so. Bren and Kari both stared in with an expression of mixture of shock and wonder etched onto their faces as she made it blossom upwards before making it disappear with a purple spark as she snapped her fingers. "Yeah, I have that weird ability." She said lazily. Winter, who has moved almost five metres away from the fire, wiped her forehead, making a dramatic fainting gesture.

"Notch, it's like the nether here."

"Nah. The nether on average is about three times hotter than the hottest day recorded in the Overworld." Bren supplied pleasantly, seeming to be the only one enjoying the scorching heat. Calypso and Freeze were indifferent.

"Well, remind me never to visit your homeland." She said wryly. "If this is what it's like here, hate to be trekking through deserts right now. Good thing we're teleporting. Nice one, Freeze." Calypso shrugged.

"Nothing wrong with a bit of desert."

"What!?" I exclaimed, sitting up slightly. "How could you like that miserable wasteland!?"

"Well, cactuses make green dye." He straightened his emerald jacket purposefully. "And sand is a component of TNT. I can't say no to anything that makes explosives!"

"Of course." I muttered, rolling my turquoise eyes.

Asult's POV
As a shapeshifter, life ain't easy. Everyone's out to get you, and being the last of your kind can become quite depressing at times. I know quite a few people that I used to care about, but now no longer walk the barren earth of Minecraftia. Well, one anyway. Hunters. They drives me crazy, the way they blunder into forests and kill the innocent. I mean, I've killed before, countless times, but there is always a reason. Maybe they deserved it, maybe it was for revenge, or maybe they were just being a real pain in the neck. And recently they've been flooding into this part of the jungle, looking for glitches and 'Viridian'. Some kid's in big trouble, from the sounds of it. But she was making herself elusive. So they kept on coming, searching for more game to satisfy their hunger for blood and gold. And how do I keep myself from going completely insane? Well, I get my revenge.

I don't kill for fun. Only when it is the last resort. Okay, and maybe OCCASIONALLY when some of them are just being complete jerks, I like to teach them a lesson. Because this is MY territory, and I've made it quite clear invaders are NOT welcome. Hunters, mainly. I let the occasional glitch slip in throwing every now and then. I'm not a mindless murderer, however. I am simply defending my territory. And I like to learn from the opposition first. That is why I morphed from an albino wolf with silvery white fur to an ocelot that climbed up a tree swiftly, leaving tiny marks with my claws. I needed higher ground to keep watch of two curious figures that had entered my territory, but something concerned me. They were glitches, but they moved confidently towards a village, unafraid of being seen. I could easily depict each one as a glitch; the boy was obviously a magma cube hybrid while the girl was some sort of changeling that I could tell was powerful. They're hunters?

I risked getting a closer look, and leapt across a few branches lightly with a slight rustling sound. A troop of other, real ocelots were sitting nearby, and watched me with a mixture of apprehension and reproach. They didn't exactly welcome me (they see me morph into a wolf a lot) but tolerated me at least. They skittered aside slightly as I moved over to see better. The two figures were moving... Uh, quite slowly. Even even from afar, I could smell the edge of burning on the wind. Cocking my head curiously. I saw the hybrid struggling to not burn the forest down, fire seeming to ignite everywhere he touched. The girl's long trench coat kept getting caught in... Well, everything actually. It was actually quite comical to watch.

I twitched my ears, swivelling them as I went even closer to eavesdrop,

"Okay, we'll go through the desert next time, alright?" The hybrid was saying.

"No objections there. I was simply recommended to go through here. I am beginning to see it as an assassination attempt." She remarked with a slight French accent

"What, you'll trip over and break your spine?" He asked mockingly with a sharp edge of sarcasm.

"Negative, though I MIGHT die in a devastating fire." She said drily, looking at him as he left a charred hand-print on a tree that he leaned on for support. "Affirmative, this is getting rather tedious and annoying, but we don't seem to be in any immediate danger at the time being... It's just that many people have disappeared here and never been found. This route is supposedly très dangereux (very dangerous)." She finished without any signs of remorse for those who have been lost. Yeah, that's because I was the one who had killed them. And now I was considering attacking these two, but something held me back. I wanted to find out their purpose here, and I couldn't help but feel as if attacking another glitch may be a bad idea. Humans were easily killed, but a glitch is a complete other story. Plus, I'm outnumbered two to one.

"GREAT..." He delicately brushed a tiny leaf off his shoulder, making it catch on fire and disintegrate into ash. "Why do people hate us so much? I mean, we're on their side here." He complained.

"Discrimination against glitches, I suppose. I've experienced quite a lot of cette bêtise (this stupidity) over the course of time. Or maybe they're just attempting to get rid of the competition." She shrugged apathetically.

"True... Some people just can't get enough of fighting." He commented placidly. "If they are not fighting glitches, they are fighting among themselves."

"Ah well. It's not like this issue will ever be resolved, by itself or otherwise. Notch is kidding himself if he thinks humans can get rid of this problem. And for that, I am somewhat glad. If all glitches dead, undoubtedly he will turn on people like us." She said all this unbelievably calmly, as if the thought of inevitable death looming over was a common concept.

"True." There was no more said in the matter, as they traipsed on in silence, each too focused on moving ahead with their own difficulties. I lingered behind only long enough to see her unhook her gold-lined cuff from a twig sticking straight out and straightening her sleeve, turning around and climbing down the tree with a twitch of my spotted tail. They could potentially be great threats, though perhaps I could take them down by surprise. Maybe if I attacked the girl first... But the repercussions seemed a bit too high to risk it... Perhaps just this time I should allow them to pass through...

Author's Note
Asult belongs to RubixPsyche, all credits go to her. I hope I portrayed him well o.O Am I the only one that doesn't proofread my writing before I publish it? I'm think yes, and you can probably tell from my constant mistakes. I only ever read my own books when I'm really bored. What's weird is on my old account, people actually said they loved one of my books so much they would read it twice and even three times. And I can't even be bothered reading my own writing, because it's so freaking boring. Wow... Also, LOVING writing about Shade and Malik right now. They're so cute and loveable!
Everyone else: NO.

PS: I was bored, so I did a quick drawing of Calypso. I was lazy, so I 'forgot' the headphones. He looks cute...ish... He looks much better in the story. I just failed completely.
