Chapter 3: Aether Guards

I turned to see a wall with posters plastered all over it. Bren was looking at all of them, his fiery gaze flitting from one to another. On closer inspection, my interest was greatly drawn to them. It seemed that this was a sort of wall of fame for the most notorious hunters and glitches. All the glitches wore sombre expressions, and it dismayed me greatly that most of the glitch posters were crossed out with blood red and labeled dispatched. Underneath the crimson paint (or at least I hoped it was paint...) I could still see some of the portraits. There was an Ender with noticeable silver streaks in her black hair and dark purple eyes that barely glowed. The paint dripped down and made her look covered in blood. Another one that was able to be seen was a boy with dark green hair and vivid red eyes. He looked morose, as if he knew what was coming. Well, that was certainly a downer on our spirits. It was the hunters that caught my attention the most, however.

They were all either grinning unpleasantly or looking at us seriously, mostly with their trademark weapons included. Unflattering comments and graffitit had been scrawled all over. I was shocked to see a few of the hunters had been crossed out as well. What? Had glitches down that? Or other hunters? It occurred to me that the greatest hunters must be getting all the profit. There must be a LOT of competition going on. No wonder they're crazier than ever. Two noticeable faces appeared quite a few times, however. Wow, their infamy must be bad. To my surprise, both were not adults but around our age. They seemed to be the youngest hunters on the wall, but certainly not the least successful.

One of them was a devilishly handsome boy with hair that was literally lava that was somehow solid and formed seperate hairs in a floppy hairstyle and bright red eyes that sparked with inner fire. His gaze held a challenging air, as if daring you to come at him. He was wearing what seemed to be a red tailcoat vest, and a light yellow shirt like a waiter or something underneath with a fancy dark red bow tie. An obsidian sickle was balanced in one hand. What completely threw me off was that he was... A magma cube hybrid! A glitch! Like us! So what the nether was he doing on the opposite side!?

Obviously Bren had noticed as well, for he was staring at the hybrid with a mixture of confusion and anger.

"What...?" I murmured.

"You're wondering what a filthy glitch is doing on us hunter's side, aren't ya kid?" A man with a crossbow slung over his shoulder casually joined us. He was more than a head taller than us, and I felt slightly awkward looking up at his chin. Frankly, I'm insulted by the filthy remark, but I want some information. Bren must have been thinking the same, for he sidled up sneakily.

"Right. Aren't they outlawed?"

"Sure, but a few of 'em have the sense to switch. Most of them were killed by other hunters, but here's a successful one." The man indicated towards another poster which had appeared quite a lot. It was a girl of sixteen, who was astonishingly beautiful but somewhat creepy at the same time. She had pure raven black (minus a few red streaks) thick, luxuriant curls that flicked up just the slightest at the ends and bangs that covered one eye entirely and cascaded down her shoulders and back. The one visible was disturbingly blood red, and her lips were unnaturally bright red which contrasted with her almost unhealthily pale skin. She was wearing what seemed to be a dark red trench coat lined with gold with thick cuffs and a stiff, uncomfortable-looking high collar as well as elegant lace white gloves. Red and black headphones hung around her neck, and old-fashioned brass goggles rested on her head. She was holding twin black and red revolvers halfway out their holsters, smirking charmingly. I wasn't fooled for a second by her suave looks, of course. She was as much a glitch as us.

"Who's that?" I asked curiously.

"Don't you know?" At our head shakes, he snorted mockingly. "You need to get out more. That's Poppy Crimson, but better known as Miss Nightshade. She's partners with that guy," he motioned towards the magma cube hybrid. "Malik. Well, look out for them. They'll be big competition if ya wanna be a hunter," he went on carelessly, striding away. There was a short silence between us.

"That's... Interesting." Bren said slowly. "Seriously though, I didn't know glitches, well, betrayed their own side."

"Me either. Guess we should look out for those two then," I replied, adjusting my sheathed sword on my belt. I was initially shocked at this news, but when you live in a world that's gone crazy, nothing really surprises you anymore.

Jett's POV
Most of the time humans are too stupid to tell, but we glitches have our differences. There are different races, but we all show a mutual respect. There is the average glitch, which are known as 'Changelings'. The term isn't used very often, and I know changeling means a faerie or something, but I suppose the creators of Minecraftia couldn't think of anything better. Then there is the hybrid, exactly what it sounds like, unlike the former. When someone is spawned, they accidentally get a little bit of mob code mixed in with their own, and bam, you're a hybrid. You get the powers of the mob, but seriously, what comes next is tons better. An elemental is what you REALLY want to be. Well, being a glitch in general does suck... But being an elemental almost makes up for it. The world's a MASSIVE game, so obviously some of that earth, water, fire, wind, light, ice, shadow code gets mixed up sometimes. And what does a standard player plus some of that code equal? An elemental of course. Being able to CONTROL your element, bend it to your will, turn INTO it. The possibilities are endless. Sorta. Then there are the other groups. Like sorcerers and shapeshifters, but they are so rare it is very possible that there are actually only around ten of each. Yes, ten.

I myself am a shadow elemental. In my opinion, definitely the coolest. You get to turn into shadow, join with shadows, heal easily in shadows, converse with dark creatures... Granted, you're pretty screwed somewhere bright like in a desert in the middle of the day... But what sort of idiot would go there knowing your limits? All in all, being a shadow elemental is awesome. Well, now that I've cleared THAT up, hopefully humans will be a little more educated and at least know who they're murdering...

"Hey, 'sup?" Winter landed on the table suddenly, almost making me jump out of my chair. Embarrassed, I flicked a lock of my dark purple hair out of my face casually, leaning back against my seat. I was sitting outside a small cafe in delicate spindly silver chairs that were certainly not designed to hold human beings in front of a birch wood table. A checkered table cloth had been draped over it, and a light chocolate brown parasol umbrella providing well-needed shade. The night was fast ending, and the sun was already casting its laser rays down at us.

"Not much, just relaxing... Thanks." I acknowledged the attractive waitress walking past with an offhand nod, flicking a golden nugget over (not really caring whether or not she had caught it) and taking a long sip of my coffee.

"We're just wracking up a bit more gold." She went on, jumping off the table and almost breaking it as it rocked sideways. The elegant crystal vase half full of sprawling water and full of yellow flowers slid down the ramp and shattered on the ground. She ignored the reproachful death glares of the waitress, who rushed towards it and began sweeping up the shattered shards with an air of agitation. Winter yawned disinterestedly, sinking in her seat.

"Great, I just got back from a heist of my own." I showed a bag full of both shining golden nuggets and a few diamonds and emeralds hidden like treasures in sand. It wasn't a lot, but that could certainly buy you something. She smiled in satisfaction.

"That's good, Freeze will be pleased with this."

"Yeah, I am." Freeze was pulling in another seat and sitting down, leaning against the table. "I've scouted out the area a little, and our next destination is a village not too far from here. Teleportation-wise, it should take about five seconds." With silky white and blue streaked hair, blue-tipped bangs flopping over one eye, a violet headset with glowing treble clefs on the sides, a sky blue hoodie, denim shorts and blue boots, she is charmingly pretty and somewhat hard to classify as an actual glitch. Hidden under her bangs was her single, glowing purple Ender eye but the other visible one was a striking frosty blue. She could easily slip into a crowd as a human, and the twin silver daggers around her waist either side were ignored completely. It seemed that most people thought that she was but a weak, puny girl. Ah, how wrong they were. About the weak and puny thing, I mean.

"Woah, someone thought ahead. Awesome, we can get outta this dump- I-I mean... such a shame to leave this FANTASTIC haven." Winter added hastily as a group of villagers nearby looked up from their intense game of poker to stare at her. "Weird place to play cards." she muttered quietly to us. Freeze nodded.

"The bar's closed, so yeah." I took another long sip of my coffee, enjoying the delicious hot beverage. "I for one are glad to leave this place. That farmer I robbed certainly didn't take kindly to someone breaking into their private stores. I nearly suffered a death by pitchfork. Doesn't seem like the best way to go."

"That's why you were late back?" Freeze asked.

"Yep."

"Why do you have that bruise on your face?" Winter pointed out quite suddenly. I winced. I had hoped it wasn't that noticeable. A small but devastating blemish on my cheek, purple as the shade of my hair.

"Uh... Right... After he ran out of knives, he started throwing other objects around..."

"What did he hit you with, a brick?" I coughed.

"Actually, it was a bag of potatoes..." I indicated towards the burlap sack beside me full of lumpy roundish objects. It was quite difficult to distinguish whether I was carrying around rocks or actual food. Winter burst into laughter with me watching her, unamused, while Freeze looked a little concerned.

"Do you want any ice for that or something?"

"Nah, it's fine." I replied gratefully, before looking at Winter, unimpressed, who was still amid her hysterics.

"Yeah right." She managed to say, taking deep breaths of air as she had just almost suffocated.

"I'll have you know potatoes can be really hard." I said, annoyed.

"SURE..."

"I'm serious."

"Whatever." Just as I wondered whether or not I should chuck a potato at her to see how she likes it, our conversation was interrupted as surprised cries and thrn a sudden, ominous silence drifted towards us and caught our attention. A shirt silence later, Winter stood up on the chair before jumping onto table again to see better and Freeze craned her neck. I finished the rest of my drink and almost choked as I saw what was coming. Aether guards. The crowds were getting split cleanly in half like a curtain as the troop arrived. Calypso appeared behind us a moment later, looking nervous and shoving a gold chain into his bulging jacket pockets.

"Uh... It seems that we've alerted the aether guards... It definitely wasn't me, though." He said to us urgently in undertone.

"Sure about that?" Winter hissed back.

"We gotta get outta here," Freeze said quietly. "I'd teleport, but maybe we should lay low for now." There was a loud twang and an arrow thudded into the wooden table inches from her chest. She gulped. "Or... Not..." The troop was closing in around us, not a word between them. Either they've mastered the power of conversing via mind, or they're experienced at this. Very experienced. I glanced down at the bag of potatoes and an idea struck me. Well, they've got another thing coming.

"Surrender now and we may spare you a swift-" the leading guard was interrupted as the sack collided with his head with a clang. I wasn't sure if it was his helmet making the sound or the rock-hard taters. He was caught off guard and fell backwards.

"Told ya potatoes make good weapons," I said triumphantly to Winter.

Author's Note
I don't even know... Well, I don't think those guards are gonna take kindly to that lol. I hoped I could make this dramatic. Instead I made it about potatoes. *face paw*
