Chapter 14: Midnight Maiden
~~~((Last Night))~~~
Jett's POV
The tension in the air that had been thicker than obsidian an hour or so ago had faded slowly. Now I wandered around the town square, examining this place. Pretty nice village, though I'm not exactly a skilled architect. Given the opportunity to study it though... That would be pretty nice, if I'm honest. No good will come of wishing I had things that are impossible though. I can only focus on what's right ahead of me and overcome the challenges I face in my rocky road to survival town. I'm not alone though... I glanced at Freeze, who was strolling next to me with her head buried in a book about cartography- as usual. I smiled just the slightest.
"Nice place huh?" I nudged her with my elbow, tilting me head just the slightest on an angle. She looked up, nodding briefly.
"Indeed." Her frosty blue gaze swept above and beyond, reflecting the golden peachy colours of sunset that were spread across the sky. The busy summer air around us was beginning to cool as night settled in. That feels good... Thank goodness all this light is gone. The sun let our it's last few blasts of light before disappearing for good. "We should hurry to find an accomodation. Y'know..." She turned back to me with a small, slight smile. "This is working out so far. Perhaps we can pull this one off. Maybe in the future we can mix with humans a bit more."
"Risky." I warned, before putting on a teasing grin. "That doesn't sound like you." I said playfully. She scoffed.
"You'd be surprised." I smirked. This is very... peaceful and tranquil, with people moving slowly and methodically around us like a waltz. Even the dirtiest corners and slovenly slums were beautiful under the radiant glow of the lilac twilight. It's been... A while since I've been able to enjoy the peace and quiet without fear of sudden death, safety of my friends and the adrenaline pumping through my body in the ferocity of a life-threatening chase. Is this how a human would be able to live like? I let out a low sigh that was too quiet for anyone to hear, not even Freeze, but I'm sure I saw her eyes flicker towards me for a second. I started, too immersed in my thoughts to realise we were just talking, and hurriedly tried to think of a witty comeback.
I was luckily excused as I heard yells becoming louder and footsteps thudding closer. We both instinctively drew back against a wall, but it was a bit too late. A ragged young boy dodged around me and slid past. He had a cheeky expression and clutched in his grubby hands was a lumpy brown bag. I could see a few glimpses of golden coins poking out, and I laughed. Which unfortunate villager was robbed? I hung around to find out, with Freeze watching curiously while pretending not to be interested as well. However, I'm shocked to see Calypso race around the corner as well, and almost flew right into me. He tried to skid to a halt, but failed as a puddle made him go even faster, and luckily grabbed a nearby pole to haul himself to a halt, panting. The next moment Winter slammed into him and turned the puddle into a mini ice rink. Luckily, no one is around to admire this circus performance. It's a bit too late for any sensible humans to hang around.
"Woah!" I backed up, my hands raised in surrender. Freeze moved backwards as well, looking bemused.
"Ugh... Why does this keep happening to me!?" Calypso adjudged his crooked sunglasses and complained to the night sky. "Notch knows where that wretched little-" He broke off into a violent volley of hissing noises. I raised an eyebrow. Woah. Language.
"Sorry to butt in, but what the nether are you guys doing!?" Freeze demanded, cutting into the conversation before it could blossom into something even weirder than what we just witnessed.
"That damn kid stole my money." He explained angrily with a lot of hissing in the background, fixing the alleyway which the urchin boy had disappeared into with a death glare that could make a zombie cry.
"Wow, thieves, what a surprise." I said dryly with an edge of sarcasm.
"He's wounded my pride." He declared dramatically, flicking a strand of his green tinted out of his face. "What is this going to look like on my reputation?"
"Can we worry about this later?" Winter interjected, annoyed. "In case you guys haven't noticed, it's night and we're out in the middle of the street." A short silence ensued, during which I swore I heard crickets chirping in the background.
"Well, that's giving us a bad image." Freeze muttered beside me. She brushed her bangs away, her violet Ender eye a purple beacon in the settling night gloom. She narrowed her eyes at a clattering sound, but shook her head and turned back to us with an expression that was a mixture between disbelief and disgust. "Teenagers out in the night... In a dark, shadowed cliche street? Great." I turned to locate the source of the sound as well, but found nothing and shrugged it off after a few seconds of searching with my acute night vision. The purple glow faded as Freeze moved her head back slowly to cover up her glitched eye once again.
"Y'know, it wouldn't be wise to be up at this time." A voice came from upwards, slicing through our conversation like a knife. We all instinctively glanced upwards, my head snapping that way so quickly I almost got a crick in my neck. Almost. A shadowed figure sat leisurely on the roof of a nearby inn, leaning back apathetically. I could make out fair features of a female, though you can probably tell from the voice, and wavy greenish hair that almost descended into blue. A jolt of fear coursed through me like an electric shock. How long has she been there? What had she seen and listened to? What if she's an elite hunter? Or worse, an aether guard! Panic flitted across my companion's expressions as well, and I could see they were thinking the same thing.
"Relax." The mysterious maiden shifted, the ivory glow of the moon revealing a small smirk on her face. But it wasn't of evil intentions, as far as I could tell, but a friendly, almost playful one. "I'm not gonna hurt ya. Ya'll need a place to stay, right?" At our silence, she rolled her eyes and huffed. "Right, I see you still don't believe me. Name's Viridian by the way, and I believe these are your friends?" From behind a sign advertising free hoe repairs, stepped Kari and Bren, the former's eyes neon green in the soft light. She tilted her head almost questioningly.
"It's alright, we can trust her." Kari called reassuringly. Bren nodded.
"Alrighty then..." Winter raised an eyebrow. "So not only do we have glitches, hunters, glitches that have become hunters and now hunters who save glitches...? What sort of messed up world do we live in!?"
