Part 4: Chapter 1 - Enchantment
Carefully, I removed the bandages from my head. My head no longer pounded with piercing pain and I could finally move without facing a sharp pain in my stomach every step I took.
I slowly got out of the bed and stood up. I picked up my things and walked toward my home, which was located at a corner of the Kingdom.
I opened the door to my home and went in. I was greeted by wet and warm licks of my dog, who looked excited to see me.
Bending down, I pat him with a smile. "I'm home."
He let out a happy yip, as if to say, "Welcome home!".
I took in the sights of my house. It had been a month since I went in, but it was kept tidy and neat by Hailbert, who offered to lend a hand.
There was a knock at the door and I quickly headed there to open it. Unsurprisingly, it was Hailbert who knocked.
"Just checking in," he said. "Sorry that I wasn't able to accompany you from the infirmary - I am still sorting out things in my house and I only just managed to get a break."
"It's fine," I responded.
"I also want to talk to you about something." From the tone of his voice, it sounded serious, so I invited him in to talk.
When we settled down on the sofa, Hailbert began to speak. "If you don't mind me asking, when we fought Mace a month ago, what did you do? I mean, why did your sword suddenly ignited with flames?"
"I'm just as clueless as you," I admitted. "I can't remember it very clearly... The first time it happened, I remember that I felt something like... anger and resentment, then it lit up for a moment. The second time... I have no idea. I guess I was just desperate."
"Honestly, it doesn't seem normal that you could do such a thing," Hailbert said.
"I thought so too. It's just that things have been very confusing for me lately," I muttered. "I considered that it was the enchantments of the sword."
"Can I see it?"
I nodded, handing my sword to him. He frowned. "Um... I can't read it. I can only recongnise the sharpness and unbreaking enchants."
"Really? I could read it just fine," I said, taking back the sword.
"That's odd," Hailbert commented.
"Some of them are in a strange language, maybe the same one as the name of the sword."
"Your sword has a name?"
"Caeruleus Ensis," I said slowly, unsure of how to pronounce the foreign language. I showed the marking on my sword.
Hailbert became more curious. "How did you get this sword? It's definitely not a normal enchanted diamond sword."
"Hmm," I thought about it for a while. "It's weird, but it appeared in my hands one day. Out of nowhere, as if it heard my silent pleas for some hope."
He did not ask anymore questions after that, only giving me a nod. "Thank you for telling me, Frost," he said. "I have to get back to sorting out the final things. I'll see you later."
I waved him goodbye, and I was left alone with my dog once more. My dog decided to take a nap in my garden while I stayed in the living room, pondering about the situation.
Hailbert is right. This sword is not normal. Why did it come to me, all that time ago? I wish I know more.
I sighed, frustrated with the lack of answers. I was so absorbed in my thoughts that I did not realise someone else was in my house.
"Hello. It's been a long time, young one." It was a soothing and patient voice that I recongnised in an instant.
"Quail!" I turned to face a female, wearing a purple and white scarf and a light brown jacket. Her amber eyes were as warm as I remembered.
Months ago, before the Kingdom was created, I met Quail and her son, Swoop, when I was collecting some cobblestone.
They were looking for a place to settle in after their village was abandoned due to the paranoia that zombies would invade with other villagers.
At that time, Quail was weak with age, and needed support to walk properly. Despite her worsening condition, she gave advice and cared for me. She was like the mother I never had.
Unfortunately, Quail passed before the Kingdom was completed, entrusting an ancient and important role to Swoop, the role of the Librarian.
Quail smiled. "I wish I could stay longer... but I have to deliver this message to you. I have recieved grave news that a thunderstorm would soon gather, bringing despair to the people. Whatever it is, please, protect them."
I nodded, at a lost for words.
Before vanishing, Quail left a final note to me, her tone serious, yet sad. "Remember, Frost, darkness never sleeps."
