The Next Morning
"I cant wait!" Trott yelled, throwing his arms around the two of us. "Good day," he said, switching back to his calm, normal voice.
"I don't like this guy," Ross whined, pointing to Trott with his thumb.
"Byyee," I told the camera.
"Bye!" Ross said as Trott fell off of his chair. Ross reached over to the computer and stopped the recording.
"Well that went well," Trott said, popping back up off the floor.
We heard a quiet knock on the door to Amanda's room and Trott ran over to unlock the door. "Is everyone decent?" she asked, giggling and shielding her eyes with her hands like a child might when playing hide and seek.
"No, I'm completely naked," Trott, who was standing right in front of her, stated plainly. She pushed him aside playfully and stepped in the room.
She wore a long tank top with the face of ghast crying on the front. She had vertically stripped, black and white leggings, which ended at a pair of converse covered in painted flames. On her head she wore a white beanie with tentacles that hung down and interlaced with her curles. She was surprisingly chipper and alive for only having gotten four hours of sleep.
I turned around in the computer chair and complimented her, "I love the outfit". At least I didn't manage to choke this time, I thought.
She blushed and lifted her leg to look at her trousers, " Thanks, it's the most docile outfit I have planned for this week," she explained.
"Well I look forward to seeing the rest of them," I tried to say as friendly as possible, but I still seemed to make her nervous. I got up out of the chair and stood by Trott.
"Anyway," she chirped, looking at the three of us, "Breakfast is at 11, and then the press event is at 4:30," she said, checking her phone, "so you guys have a few chunks of free time."
"We were gonna go tour Mandalay Bay" Trott said, stressing the vows in the name of the hotel, "You're welcome to come with us".
"Oh," she laughed nervously, "I wouldn't want to impose..." she trailed.
"It's really no problem," Ross shrugged.
I felt another stab of jealousy at the thankful smile she gave him. "Yeah," I agreed, "We'd love to have you."
She turned to me and smiled brightly. "Well then I guess I'm coming," she said as she lifted her arms and dropped them again in a shrug.
Trott grabbed the camera and started filming, pointing it out the window. "There's a pool over there," he said. "Public pool, which isn't open," he added. He jerked the camera in spastic motions, "Another pool, another pool..."
I walked up behind him, "You can probably only see our reflections in the window," I told him.
He ignored me and continued on, "Top of buildings, McDonald's over there." He quickly turned the camera upwards and leaned against the window, getting a shot of the hotel sign, "Maundaulay Beauy," he said in his strange pronunciation. He repeated it, this time even more forced.
"Trott's still struggling to pronounce it," I explained to the audience as well as Amanda, who's giving Trott a concerned look as if he might be hurt.
"We taught him, but he just doesn't learn," Ross said as Trott panned the camera over to face him, "When you gonna learn, mate? When?"
"I...I dunno..." Trott said, but was cut off quickly by Ross.
"It's Mandalay Bay," Ross corrected.
"So how do you feel about being here?" Trott asked as he zoomed in close to Ross' face.
"I feel...great," Ross said. "fantastic...thrilled..." he continued, "and enigmatic..." He kept listing off feelings, waiting for Trott to stop filming, "...obtuse..."
Trott jerked the camera again, "And now were gonna go downstairs and tour with this girl".
Amanda stood there somewhat awkwardly, and then brought up her hands in a double thumbs up, posing. When Trott continued to film, she shook her shoulders up and down in a lackluster dance.
"Right, that was perfect," Trott laughed, finally putting the camera down. "I'll cut that, don't worry," he added after a minute to Amanda.
"Thanks," she smiled, shouldering her camera bag. "Are we all ready?" she asked the three of us.
I stood behind her, making my way towards the door, "Let's go."
-------------------------------------------
"Ross," Trott said in his high voice, "Ross, come here." Ross walked up closer to him, "I...I got really excited," he stopped, trying not to laugh, "I got really excited and weed a little," he said, trying to sound embarrassed. "Sorry gu....Amanda!" he said, doubling over. "Stop laughing!" he shouted, giggling.
"I'm sorry," she gasped between laughs. Her voice twinkled around the empty street and sounded as if it were it's own unique song. I loved watching her laugh; seeing her eyes crinkle at the corners and her lips pull back to reveal a perfect row of straight teeth. Her brown eyes lit up and in the sunlight they shone with light and laughter. This was the first time I ever saw her in hysterics, and I hoped that I could make her laugh like that one day.
"We'll have to retake that," I said, walking up beside Amanda, "Someone was being distracting." I tried to keep an annoyed face, but I couldn't help but laugh at the fact that she was not yet able to catch her breath.
"I'll just go over there," she pointed, still holding her stomach and giggling.
We tried again and decided that it was doable, since Trott was at least able to get out his lines this time. I looked over to see Amanda with her head in her hands and her shoulders shaking from laughter.
'I am so sorry," she said afterwords, still smiling.
"It wasn't that funny," Trott said, laughing as he did so.
"That voice!" she gasped, giggling, "It was perfect."
We spend the rest of the morning walking around Mandalay Bay. We passed by the luxor, which was already packed with gamblers. At one point, Amanda and I had fallen behind the others a few paces, and I took the opportunity to talk to her privately.
"So are you enjoying your trip so far?" I asked, looking at her sideways as we walked. "Sorry you're stuck with us twats," I said, motioning to the two men in front of us.
She blushed, looking down at the ground. "It's been amazing hanging out with you guys," she said, looking up towards me, " I can only imagine what the rest of the week will be like," she smiled.
"Are you nervous for tomorrow," I asked, trying to keep conversation light.
Her smile quickly faltered and dropped; she looked ahead. "To be honest? I don't think I can do it," she said quietly.
I was shocked, "What? Why?" I asked.
She got even quieter, "I don't know..." she trailed off. "I'm just...very nervous," she whispered.
"Amanda," I said, "If you can do what you do everyday in front of millions of fans, then five thousand people should be a walk in the park." Now I really felt bad for having not looked at any of her content. Was she this shy on her channel too? I want to give her the benefit of the doubt, but shy people don't normally make it in the entertainment business.
"But, Smith," she sighed, "Most of them won't be fans, and it's being broadcast to millions of others who probably don't even know who I am..." she said sadly.
"Hey," I said to her a little too loudly, trying to snap her out of it, "You're..." I trailed off, suddenly drained of confidence, "You're amazing, they'll love you..."
Just then, Trott ran up and and pushed Ross into a bush next to the sidewalk, laughing maniacally as he did so. Amanda covered her mouth in surprised, but from right next to her I could see her smile. "What was that for?" she called.
"I was wondering the same thing," Ross said, getting up and brushing himself off. Trott just laughs and continues walking.
"And you live with them?" she asked, surprised.
I sighed and looked at her, "Yeah." We stared at eachother, and then both burst into laughter.
She giggled, "It seems like it would be such a party. They're great guys." She looked up at me, "You're all... great guys..." she added, blushing.
We settled into a comfortable silence as we caught up with Ross and Trott. They were talking about the press conference.
"Speaking of the press conference," I added when they finished, "we're going to the shark reef today, you're welcome to join us. If you're not busy."
Her eyes lit up and she stopped in her tracks, "Really?" she asked, excited. She turned to Trott and Ross, "Could I?" she gasped, almost bouncing on her heals as she grabs Trott's arm.
"Sure," Trott laughed, amused by her enthusiasm.
She threw her arms around the two of them, "Thank you! I'd love to!" she exclaimed.
"Of course," Ross said, "but don't you have anything to do before the conference?" he asked.
"No?" she scoffed, her arms still resting on his chest from the hug to my dismay. "I'm only junior director, I just have to show up and look pretty." she laughed, smiling at Ross and finally breaking away from him.
You're doing a great job so far, I thought.
The rest of the morning we spent checking out the confrence floor. People buscled around carrying ladders, tools, and equipment. The main room was full of tables, chairs, large boxes, and computers were already set up in the back of the hall. A few booths were at their first stages of set up, but you would have never guessed Minecon was tomorrow.
"It looks great so far," Amanda said, whispering for no apparent reason, "It's going to be epic." She ducked her head back into the lobby, "And I love how well the entryway came out," she said, running her hands along the cobblestone colums that framed the door way; it had show times and mobs decorated the empty spaces in the traditional Minecraft style. "I was afraid that it might look gimicey if I made the cobblestone texture like I did," she said, dropping her hand back to her side.
We were all taken aback by this, "You did this?" I asked, pointing.
She giggled at our expression, "I'm going to school for digital arts," she explained, "Of course I did this; though it's about the only thing Lydia trusted me with," she laughed.
"You continue to amaze me, you know?" Ross said.
She blushed a bright shade of red and ran a hand through her bangs. "Thank you," she said, giving him a shy smile.
I felt anger bubbling up at Ross, but quickly pushed it back down. What's wrong with you? I thought, You met her yesterday, and you're already getting territorial over her? And against you're best friend? It's not like you have control over who she likes anyway. I felt ashamed of myself and the way I was acting.
She gave me an expecting look, like she had heard my thoughts and was waiting for me to voice them. "You're an amazing artist," I said lamely. She still gave me a shy smile but she seemed dissapointed with my response.
"Well look who it is," we heard a voice behind us say. Turing around, we saw a man wearing a green creeper hat and holding a large camera. He was thin and covered in tattoos, yet I did not recognize him.
"Joel," Amanda exclaimed, running over and lacing her arms under his, pulling him into a hug.
He asked her a question in a different language, possibly German, and a quick conversation ensued. I heard Hat Films mentioned, and started to get a sinking feeling about this guy.
He walked between all of us and stuck his head through the door, "You getting a sneak preview of the convention floor?" he asked, snapping a picture.
Ross ignored his question, only stared at him until a look of recognition crossed his face. "You're Deadmau5," he said with a hint of awe in his voice.
"Hey! Look who's catching on," he smiled, shaking each of our hands. "I've heard so much about you guys the past few months from Amanda," he said, winking at her.
She blushed a fierce shade of red and searched my face for a reaction. I was touched, and could feel a flutter of hope beginning in my heart.
"How the hell do you know Deadmau5," Trott asked incredulously, "He's like, the biggest DJ in the world."
Joel threw and arm around Amanda, who was a head shorter than him. "Were engaged," he said, messing up her hair.
Whatever hope I had felt a few seconds ago shriveled up and died. How could she have not mentioned she was engaged, especially to someone so famous? I felt the blood run from my face, feeling stupid and naive. I couldn't believe I actually thought I had a chance with this girl, someone who lived across an ocean from me. Plus, somone so beautiful would obviously be with someone.
Joel doubled over laughing and pointed at me, "Calm down buddy, I was just kidding!" He continued to laugh, "You should have seen the look on your face." He clapped his hands together as if my embarassment was the funniest thing he'd ever heard.
"Piss off," she laughed, pushing him away and fixing her hair. She didn't seem to notice my reaction, though I felt embarassed. "We used to play on a server together before either one of us was very famous," she explained.
"Oh," Trott said simply, "I didn't know you played much Minecraft."
"Of course man," Joel said, "And I'll be the DJ for the Nether Party tomorrow night."
The Nether Party was the 'Over 21' party for select Youtubers and those famous in the community. Amanda had sent us our tickets and VIP passes, so we will be able to get into a private area with the rest of the Mojang Team. Though Joel's comments and jokes somewhat pissed me off, I couldn't help forgiving him. He was very relaxed and friendly, and though he was a lot more confident, his personality paralleled Amanda's.
"Ah!" Amanda shouted, "I can't wait! You guys are coming right?" she asked. "I sent you the VIP passes."
"Of course," I said, "but you're not over 21, I thought." She just winked at me and flashed her staff badge that hung around her neck. I could feel my excitement growing for the party, now that I knew she was coming.
Just yesterday I had met this girl, and now even the suggestion of spending a little more time with her made me feel nervous and excited and caused my heart to beat a mile a minute. When we were apart, all I could think of was her brown ringlets, her soft, red lips, and her amazing voice. I felt electricity whenever we brushed shoulders or hands while walking, and it was intoxication just being near her. Could I possibly be in love with this girl; someone I had just met not 48 hours ago? It was in that question that I realized there was no choice in that answer. What was going on with me?
"So are you all going to the Mojang breakfast?" Joel asked, snapping me out of my thoughts.
Ross checked his watch. "Oh yeah," he said, "We should probably get going."
A/N: Sorry these first few chapters were a bit long and tedious, I just needed to establish chacters and a setting and start to develope relationships and all that boring stuff. It should pick up speed next chapter. Thank you for reading, I hope you're enjoying it so far.
