EVERLASTING
• Epilogue •
"Noeul!"
Noeul looks back to find the screamer already running towards her, dodging a few pedestrians on the way. She quickly covers her mouth to stiffle her laugh.
"You forgot this," says the person, stretching his fisted hand towards her, still huffing from all his running.
Tilting her head at one side, Noeul ponders with a small pout on her lips.
"What is it in your hand?"
The person grins. He slowly opens his fist and lets the chain dangle down.
"You forgot your most precious thing. Your lucky charm."
Initially Noeul lets out a gasp, then gets quiet as if looking at the dangling pendant triggered a memory within her mind. He notices her saddened eyes but he will not let her get sad on such an important day.
"Now now don't give me those sad puppy eyes and here take it and wear it."
Noeul chuckles and takes the pendant from his hand. She puts it around her neck, the heart shaped pendant remains at its right place, closer to her heart.
The person suddenly shrieks, startling Noeul. And then starts to push her.
"You shouldn't be late on your first day at work! Now run!"
"Okay! I'm going," Noeul hurriedly takes long big steps towards the school but suddenly halts.
The person left behind gets puzzled when Noeul takes a sudden U turn and starts to run at his direction, opposite of school. She runs at full speed and only stops when she collides with him, scooping him into a hug in the process. The person, getting over his initial shock, hugs her back.
"Thank you. Thank you so much for saving me out of my own darkness. I love you so much, papa."
Tears keep pestering Jungkook as he tries to resist them his best.
"Heaven gave me a second chance. I was bound to save my savior. I love you more than anything, my baby. Your mom and I, we're so proud of you. Our little girl grew up so much. Ugh, this is frustrating. Why couldn't you stay as the small chubby baby who never used to leave papa's lap?"
Noeul laughs while wiping her tears that came out unintentionally.
"I'll always be the same for my papa. My size and growth doesn't matter. It's the matter of our hearts, right?"
Jungkook stares at her fondly. The soft rays of morning sun falls over her pale face. Her smile, even though not the full heart shaped one, it still reminds him of one person. His Taetae.
Time flew away but he could never let go of his memories with his Taetae. He often wonders if he's doing fine up there, if he's looking at him right now. And then his eyes find his daughter's ones so he realizes, his Taetae was never gone.
Noeul may have a name similar to his sister's but her heart, her words-are all of his.
Under the morning sunlight, Jungkook again reminisces his childhood, his youth with his brother figure, his savior, Taetae.
Noeul wanders inside the school campus. Her heart thuds in fear. She clutches the pendant close to her heart.
It isn't helping.
She opens the pendant and looks at the photo. Seeing the smiling face of his, she smiles while caressing it delicately.
"Now my heart will be at peace since I saw the face of my angel. I love you so much, Taehyung."
Heaving out a sigh, Noeul walks along the hallway, looking for the Principal's room. After a certain distance, her steps get heavy. An uneasy feeling settles within her. It's not fear nor nervousness. It's different, much alive even exciting.
A sudden nostalgia catches her. She feels as if she's reliving something that happened before except she doesn't know what.
Soothing melody flows. The sound of piano makes her halt. Eyes getting wide, mouth agape, she looks at the music room with closed door.
Noeul closes her eyes. The melody flows through her ears. For the first time in a while, she feels alive. Not just breathing but living. Eyes closed, feet working against her will, her hand touches the wooden door. The music much clearer now.
She can feel the harsh taps on the piano keys. As if the piano player was eliciting his pain through the sweet yet bitter melody. Tears spill down with a whimper and she still has no idea why. The music stops. Noeul quivers.
"It can't be you.."
She opens the door and sees the piano but no human in sight.
"W-what-But I heard it I-"
"Oh, you're here! The Principal's room is that way. Come, I'll show you," the teacher says, gesturing.
"W-wait. I heard piano playing inside the room but there was no one when I checked."
"Oh it must be the new Music teacher! He joined yesterday. He must have left through the back door. Quite a shy person, you see."
And here I was thinking I finally found the lost piece of my heart.
How foolish of me.
Noeul walks away with the teacher. Her figure fading away as a new figure emerges from behind the door.
"How naive you are, Noeul. What will I do with you."
Brown orbs never faltering away from her faded figure.
