The Mistaken

Mei Jian's POV

I am angry, always angry. And this anger, this curse, is the reason why I am all alone today.

Once upon a time, we: Xiōngdì, Jiejie, and myself were happy. We were like a well-oiled machine that helped Father rule, manage and protect Heaven from those who dare to destroy it.

Since before my creation, Heaven and Underworld were in a power-hungry struggle. The demons relentlessly attacked our gates, wanting to enter our realm.

'Why can't they be happy with what they have, I wondered, failing to understand their motives.

Of course, I was curious, and so was Xiōngdì, but Father had never been forthcoming. So, I had done what I was supposed to: serve under Xiōngdì and be his right-hand man. All I ever wanted was to protect and serve. For I respected him; loved him.

But all that changed the day Jiejie had returned from the mortal realm. She looked drained and weak. Understandable, since it was a well-known fact what living among mortals could do to our aura.

What was surprising, however, was how Xiōngdì had insisted that Jiejie take a break and meditate in the vast Kunlun mountains to cultivate and stabilize her spiritual energy.

When father had looked reluctant, he had begged and pleaded with him on her behalf. I had never seen Xiōngdì like that: desperate.

Father had agreed, for it was the first time Xiōngdì had asked for something. I was surprised, to say the least, for all though he was protective of both of us, he was always distant. Thus, it was beyond me why he had taken it upon himself to come and talk to Father on Jiejie's behalf.

That was the first time I had felt jealous of Jiejie. Wasn't I the one always next to him? Did he not trust me, want me, need me to be by his side, as a brother, a partner!?

At the time, though, I had let it go. Maybe, Xiōngdì was only watching over Jiejie, just like he did over me when I returned from dangerous missions.

Alas, that wasn't the case. Xiōngdì had fallen for Jiejie. And together, they had done the unthinkable. They had brought an abomination in our midst.

Not only had he betrayed my trust in him, but he had gone a step further and tried to speak for and protect the abomination as well.

Xian, he had called it!

Why, Xiōngdì!? Why!?

Though I had felt disappointed, I couldn't bring myself to hate him. I could never hate him. I loved him. Yet, I couldn't stand to look at him; I couldn't bear to look at him standing next to Jiejie; I couldn't let him be hers.

And as Heavenly Father's wrath had fallen on him, I had stood by and watched as he faced him head-on. It had scared me, for I recognized the look in our father's eyes. I knew that his sword wanted to taste blood, the blood of his oldest, most beloved son, YiJun.

What hurt, though, was that even though Xiōngdì knew that he might die or worse, fall, he was still defending the abomination with all he had.

'Xiōngdì, what is he to you?' I wondered, but remained silent. And then it happened. He lost his footing, and Jiejie jumped to protect him; she pushed him over.

No, I couldn't let her die for him. I knew that having sinned, his chances of surviving the fall would be next to nothing, and I didn't want to be left alone to bear the pain of losing him.

No, I couldn't let that happen. So I stopped Father's sword from piercing her heart. After all, she had taken for me what was mine. And I wanted her to suffer, just like I was going to, without my Xiōngdì.

After that cursed day, Father had told me to keep an eye on Jiejie. He was scared that having lost her blood, she might do the unthinkable and fall as well. So every evening, irrespective of what I am doing, I go to Jiejie and talk about insignificant matters. I never mention Xiōngdì, and neither does she. It's like she has erased him from her mind; from her heart.

She smiles and nods, sometimes she offers me a word or two out of courtesy as well, and I accept them graciously, like a younger brother is supposed to.

I miss Xiōngdi, Jiejie. Don't you? After all, he risked his existence for a promise he made to you. He fell for your Xian.

Today, like every day for the past eighteen years, I am back to spend time with Jiejie. She has taken permanent residence in the Kunlun mountains. She rarely steps out; Father doesn't force her either.

For the past few days, though, every time I have visited her, she has looked restless. I have never seen her like this. It worries me.

"General!" A soldier calls and enters Jiejie's sanctuary unannounced, pulling me out of my musings.

"Speak." I command, and he side-eyes Jiejie, before once again looking at me, "General, there has been some unusual activity at the gates of the underworld."

Jiejie gasps and stands up, looking horrified.

"Jiejie, there is nothing to worry, as long as I am leading the heaven's armies, I won't let any harm come to us," I reassure, but the concern etched on her face doesn't dissipate.

"Jiejie, if it is bothering you, I will... "

"No," She blurts and looks at the soldier, "Elaborate," she adds, looking equal amounts worried and scared. Surprisingly, however, her voice holds resolve.

The soldier looks at me for approval and continues, "Our sources say that something vile has escaped from their prison."

"What escaped?" I enquire, and he shakes his head, "Our informant wasn't able to get anything else. But rumor has it that the escape was planned and executed by some higher-ups there."

"On what basis?"

"The entities, who escaped, were locked up in their most secure prison. Only those with power to break the enchanted cage would be able to break the seal." He replies, but before I can ask my next question, Jiejie demands, "Anything else?"

The soldiers continue, "The informant thinks that these entities will enter the mortal realm to escape capture."

"Ha!" I laugh, "The underworld has remained quiet for long enough. I was expecting them to do something anyway. Jiejie, this is what they do every couple of years. They free their prisoners so that when they enter the mortal realm, they would have a reason to do it without breaking the treaty." I explain, hoping to calm her down, but it doesn't. She becomes more agitated. "Anything else?" She asks again, and the soldier shakes his head, "No, Shijie." He replies, and I dismiss him with instructions to keep me posted on any developments or suspicious activity.

Once we are alone once again, Jiejie's eyes glaze over with unshed tears. She looks at me. Not through me or past me, like she always does, she looks at me; and catches my gaze for the first time in eighteen years, "A Jian, do you ever regret your actions?"

My brows crease in confusion, and she continues, "Did you ever love Gege?"

My head reels, and my eyes widen. Why was she bringing up Xiōngdì now, after eighteen years? Yes, he had taken the blame on his shoulders; he had admitted to having forced himself on Jiejie and made her accept him, but I had never believed that. And now, with Jiejie's questions, her eyes that were scared and worried, her restless energy, I was beginning to think that perhaps there was more to it than I had realized. Perhaps there were things that I had missed; that maybe, just maybe, I was mistaken.
