Chapter 19
"It was a smooth landing!" exclaims Alcina while getting out of her seat and walking towards the woman, Gerri, who is the pilot. The woman blushes at Alcina's comment and then nods her head in acknowledgement.
"Come on, everyone. There are two SUVs waiting outside. Cayden and Fenris, you can move out and help with the luggage. I will stay back," says Dominic. Fenris nods and then gets up from beside me. He looks at me once and then smiles.
"You did good, Nikita. I am proud of you," he says, smiling down at me and I remember how I had squeezed his hand when I saw the ground becoming smaller and smaller in size. It was a totally exhilarating moment to see the clouds floating beside me.
I had seen both Fenris and Dominic smiling at me when I turned back towards Fenris; after observing the clouds to my heart's content. Dominic has been a constant presence in my mind, a calm presence, making sure that I don't panic.
I don't know why his mental presence calms me more than my brother's physical presence.
However, I don't let my mind dwell on those thoughts.
"Come on," whispers Sierra and I blink to look at her as she leans over to shake my shoulder. I nod at her and then unlock my seat belt, shaking my legs a bit before standing up. My legs feel like jelly and I almost collapse but then Mila steadies me from beside Sierra and I smile at her.
She chuckles and turns back to look at Christine who's holding onto Mila's shoulder, supporting her.
"My legs feel like jelly too," Mila whispers while chuckling.
A chuckle is heard and I belatedly realize that it's me who's chuckling. Sierra stares at me in wonder and then beams at me, reaching out to me with one hand while the other is holding onto a sleeping Selene.
"You are very brave, sestra," she whispers and then leans forward to rub her cheek against mine in an affectionate gesture.
"It's your confidence, Sierra," I whisper back and let her pull me out into the aisle and then I follow her. Mila and Christine walk out first. Alcina is nowhere to be seen and I breathe in a sigh of relief.
I do not know why but she feels a little different. She feels off. As if she's hiding something. It makes me nervous about her presence.
"How was your experience?" asks Dominic breaking my chain of thoughts. I blink and look up at him, only to realize that Sierra has waked out and I am standing alone inside the jet with Dominic in front of me.
Does that scare me? Surprisingly Dominic doesn't scare me.
"It was good. A very pleasant memory. Thank you," I whisper and smile up at him, feeling grateful for the experience. I was really excited and it turned out to be much better than I had anticipated.
"The pleasure is all mine, moya Zvezda," he whispers while bending down to drop a kiss on my head. A shiver threatens to run down my spine but I squish the urge.
This intimacy that's developing between us, it's causing havoc of emotions inside me. I am afraid but not of Dominic, I am more afraid of this unknown emotion.
He frames my cheek with one hand and then squeezes my neck once with the other, before dropping another kiss on my cheek and then lifting his chin towards the door. I blink from the pleasurable tingles that are running through my body and then let him steer me towards the door.
The moment I step out of the door and onto the staircase to climb down from the jet, I sense something. It's tiny but it's there.
It's a call.
I jerk my head and stop, making Dominic bump into me but I don't move. I stand there on the last step and close my eyes, taking in the fresh air of this foreign land.
Spreading my senses just like Fenris taught me, I take in all the voices, noises and air. It brings a sense of rightness to it. It's like I found something.
I feel this feeling in my chest while my heart beats frantically in my chest. What is it?
"What is it?" asks Dominic from behind me and I shake my head.
"Your heart's beating loud enough for Fenris to hear from that car," he whispers in my ear, his breath fanning over my scarf covered neck. He points towards the black vehicle from where Fenris steps out. He starts making his way towards me and that makes me take a step forward and away from Dominic.
Dominic lets me create the space between us and then follows slowly, his mind brushing against mine but I push him out gently. He is only trying to help me but I am not so sure of myself.
I do not want to accidentally reveal anything to anyone. Because I feel that I am close to something. It's either Sascha or Wulfric.
And it's making my heart pound out of fear. If it's Wulfric then I don't want to put anyone in my family in danger. He will sense me if he's near me. He might even come after me and if knows that Fenris is alive, he might go after my brother.
No!
"You are scared, Nikita," declares Dominic from behind me. I don't pay attention to him because I have reached Fenris who's already glaring at Dominic.
"What did you do?" he asks and I sigh in exasperation. I don't know why Fenris is so inclined to think that Dominic has some ill will towards me. He is my friend and I don't think he will hurt me.
He might have some sort of a desire towards me but I don't think it will harm me. It's my past and my torture that's stopping me from exploring these feelings infused by Dominic's presence.
And that's not Dominic's fault!
"Oh, Fenris. He didn't do anything. Dominic is my friend. He won't hurt me," I whisper quietly while watching Fenris. I feel like praising myself for not stammering under my brother's shrewd gaze.
"Oh, when did we make this progress?" he asks and then plants his feet in front of me, making it difficult for me to sidestep him.
"Fenris," warns Dominic while standing beside me. "Do not test my patience, kid. She said we are friends and I mean it. So, stop troubling my friend."
"Isn't it surprising? You are way more comfortable with Dominic than you are with Cayden. And you have met him a couple of times more than Dominic," comments Fenris while raising a brow and my temper rises up a notch.
"Perhaps because Dominic doesn't treat me as if I am made of glass," I whisper, shocking him.
"What?"
"Fenris, I do not wish to talk about this here, out in the open. I bet our cousins are listening," I whisper and tilt my head towards the car, where the cousins are definitely trying to eavesdrop.
"Fine!" exclaims Fenris and then puts his hand around my shoulder and pulls me towards the car.
"Dominic, please come in the other car. This one is full," adds Fenris while steering me towards where Alcina and Sierra are waiting inside the car. I miss the smirk on Sierra's face while watching Dominic shake his head and make his way towards the other car in which Christine, Mila and Cayden are waiting patiently.
How embarrassing is this?
~~~
It's the wedding day. And from what I could understand from Sierra, a wedding is a very huge ceremony where humans celebrate their union. Where a man and woman get married in front of their families and promise to be with each other for the rest of their lives.
It's interesting to know that even humans have this system similar to the mate-thing. The only difference might be that humans choose their partners whereas supernaturals cannot really choose their mates.
Also, matings are for eternity, that's what I have heard and seen. But humans can break their bond by signing a piece of paper. Overall this marriage thing looks very flimsy to me.
However, Connor and Catrina do not look flimsy or fake. They are completely and hopelessly in love. They are soulmates, perhaps that's the reason why they are so in tune with each other.
It's like their bodies are moving in sync with each other, walking and behaving as if they have been practising it for decades. But that's not true. I have heard that they had a past, quite painful for Catrina to bear alone but she's tough. And now Connor has claimed her for a lifetime.
She's also a dormant wolf.
I had never heard of this term but apparently, it's true because the woman looks really fragile, completely human. But her mind is strong. She makes these wolves of her pack bow to her. Surely, she must be a good person and a strong force to stand by her Alpha mate's side.
Sitting at one of the round dining tables, I am sipping on a fruity liquid when someone knocks on my table. I peer up at the person in front of me, ready to teleport out of fear; when I notice that it's the bride herself.
Earlier when I had teleported in front of her, she seemed to be shocked but did not scream out of fear. I had heard someone yell from behind me at my sudden appearance. My witch presence made these werewolves nervous and I completely understand that feeling.
I am nervous amongst these new wolves as well. Hell, I am nervous of Crimson Shadow's wolves too.
It's not news, that I am anti-social.
"May I sit?" Catrina asks and I straighten in my seat. Smiling at her a little and pushing away the thought of teleporting out of this place; I nod as Catrina slips into the seat beside me.
"Are you okay? I understand that werewolves are quite nervous around witches. My mate is too and I came to apologise on his behalf for his grumpy attitude," she whispers softly, looking at someone behind me.
I turn in my seat slightly and from the corner of my eyes, I watch her mate who looks quite uncertain about my presence here.
Sighing, I decide to put the Alpha male at ease. "Please tell your mate that I will not disrespect your invitation. I promise I do not mean any harm to this pack or you," I whisper and nearly hear Alpha Connor breathe in a sigh of relief.
In front of me, Catrina shakes her head, realising my motive behind those words and then smiles at me sheepishly.
"I heard from Cade, that you are a very powerful witch," she says quite excitedly and I can't help but smile at her gesture. She's trying to familiarise herself with me. She's making an effort to know me. On her wedding day when she's supposed to meet people and be with her mate, doing what mates do.
Have pleasurable sex!
I appreciate Catrina's gesture and so I smile at her and nod. "Yes, I am a witch."
"Thank you very much for... kil... what you did to Xanthos and then for saving my Connor," she says and I do not miss the stammer in her words when she spoke of how I burnt Xanthos to death.
It was my first kill and perhaps a scary one, considering everyone around me is a little scared because of the way I killed Xanthos. But I don't regret it. Not even for a minute. That rogue was my torturer's son and he deserved to die.
Not because of what he did to me, but because of the countless young females he raped and abused. He was just like his father. He raped his own mate; under the guise of making her the Queen of wolves but ultimately locking her in the dungeon when she refused to run for his errands.
When I had once felt slightly guilty for killing Xanthos that way, Sierra had given me the truth of Xanthos's deeds and I had washed off of that guilt. I know it all and I also know that Xanthos's pregnant mate is given refuge in the school. In the same building where Mila is staying.
"I killed a rogue wolf. And I will kill any rogue supernatural who threatens my brethren," I say and watch as Catrina nods at me, smiling a bit while her eyes shine with tears.
"You are really very strong, Nikita. It's a pleasure. It makes me feel proud that I have you as my cousin," she whispers while lifting her hand and giving mine a squeeze.
There's an energy in her touch. When her hand makes contact with mine, sparks fly and I can even see a bit of dust puffing from the contact.
We both gasp at the scene in front of us and then keep watching as the dust settles on the table and the sparks calm down. She looks up at me and I do the same to her. I can sense her shock as well as mine while she tries to decipher what just happened.
It never happened before. What is the meaning of the sparks and dust when she touched me?
Her touch feels warm and very soothing. Love pours out of her fingers and seeps into my skin, calming me a bit. I stare at her hand curiously. Her essence is trying to soothe me.
It's fascinating!
"What's this?" I ask Catrina because she seems to be comfortable with this thing that's happening between us. However, I feel unsure. It has never happened to me before.
"Your magic is deep, Nikita. I have only ever felt this with one person. She was just a random girl. A human, actually. I had once visited the hospital where I worked before meeting Connor. I was working in that hospital for a month only, actually filling in for someone because that nurse had gone on leave," Catrina explains and I listen to her attentively as she continues.
"Yes, so this girl. She had a huge gash on her hand. It was a deep cut, probably made by a broken piece of glass. I had stitched her wounds and it was like this. Exactly like this."
By the time Catrina finishes her story, my heart has started pounding in my chest. It can't be!
"What do you mean exactly like this?" I ask her, not really believing her.
"Means, exactly like what happened now. Sparks flew and dust puffed out from our contact. It's what happened with her as well. I have experienced it only twice. One with her and then you," she explains and this time, I swallow tightly.
My mind inadvertently starts connecting the dots and I recall how I was feeling when I got out of Dominic's jet. That feeling of being close to something. Or someone.
Oh, Goddess!
"Do you know why this might have happened?" I ask, trying to keep the breathlessness out of my voice.
Fenris and Dominic both are around here somewhere. The witch, Alcina's here, too. I try to push down my panic or excitement, I don't know what it is, but I don't want anyone to question me about it. Not now. I am not even certain of what it might be.
And I will not disclose about Sascha before I find her. Telling someone about her existence is risky. Someone might overhear it and then they can attack her.
No! I can't tell anyone.
Focusing on Catrina, I tune myself to her emotions, feeling relieved when she sounds confused and not as if she's hiding something.
"Oh, it might be because I am an emotional healer. Elder Fridolf said that I can connect with the mind of a person through my touch. However, I do not know the reason behind these sparks," she says while pointing at our joined hands with her other hand.
"Did you ask anyone about this? May I know why it happened?" I ask, trying very hard to curb the urgent note in my voice. Unfortunately, Catrina catches it and frowns, thinking hard. She shakes her head a bit and then shrugs.
"At that time, I was more focused on her bleeding so later I forgot about it. I recalled it now only because of this similar reaction. I am sorry but I do not remember much," she whispers and then pats my hand. I nod at her and then take my hand back. She does too and before I can ask her anything, her mate walks in on us, ruining my chance of extracting any more information from her.
"Let's go," he says and then looks at me. He doesn't smile but then nods in acknowledgement. I don't smile either. I cannot even bring myself to smile, I am so lost in my thoughts.
Absentmindedly, I wave at Catrina and Connor, trying really hard to think of a way to track down this woman who Catrina has met.
What are the chances!
Really, what are the chances that this woman might be none other than Sascha?
A throat clearing startles me and I jump in my seat. Mila sits in the chair vacated by Catrina and then looks at me, while Cayden stands behind her.
"Are you alright?" asks Cayden while looking around.
"Yes," I whisper and sigh, allowing myself to relax in front of my cousin. If he notices that I am not feeling good here, he will go and tell Fenris. And then Fenris will either send Sierra or come here by himself. That will ruin their fun and I don't want to do that.
"Are you sure? You have been sitting here for quite some time now," he says and then runs a finger over his chin, thinking deeply. Mila nods her head in agreement.
"Come on, let's have dinner?" she asks while getting up and offering me her hand. Cayden smiles over his mate's head and then glances at me.
Not wanting to hurt their feelings, I nod and place my hand in Mila's allowing her to lead me towards the dining hall.
However, my appetite has vanished at the thought of finding my older twin sister. I haven't ever met her before. Even if I do find her, will she recognise me? Will she believe me?
Where does she live? In a human town? Does that mean she believes herself to be a human? In that case, will she believe me?
Or has her wolf revealed itself? Is she safe? Does she know what love means? Or maybe she's living her life happily with a mate by her side.
All these thoughts give me a headache while I sit in the dining hall,watching the bride and groom cut their wedding cake and celebrate their awaited future.
