Blaire grasped the bags in between her fingers as she headed down the very same alleyway she had gone through earlier. Although it wasn't appropriate for a lady to be walking home alone, Blaire didn't care. Her carelessness was almost admirable. Her attention could care less about the world around her. Her mind was immersed in her thoughts as the cold cobblestone echoed her footsteps off the brick walls. Window shopping backfired. Blaire had bought groceries of all sorts including vegetables, fruits, snacks, notebooks and other things. Her trip was coming to an end as she was almost home. However, Azazel, Emma, Riptide and an unknown mutant lurked in the shadows past the fog. In the darkness they lingered. Like a predator coming upon its prey.
I'm in position. On my mark.
Blaire heard multiple footsteps in the distance, catching her attention. A faint echo ran across the streets. The echo skipped along the walls as one echo became many. A pitter patter. Almost as if someone was there.
"Hello?"
Blaire looked for a shadow or a body. She saw nor heard something. It was silent now. The echo stopped. The noise had culminated into something but now it was something. It was a eery silence.. Hmm, how odd.
Now.
Riptide and the unknown mutant made their way towards Blaire as Emma came from behind. Blaire confused, didn't know where the noise was coming from as she couldn't pinpoint from where it originated from. Where were they coming from?
"Excuse me."
Blaire turned towards Emma. Her smile was one of relief however something felt different. Her eyes meet Emma with relief, however something was off. Her warm colored irises stared at her with amusement as she quickly denoted that Emma was different. Her eyes. They looked power hungry and cold. Blaire opened her mouth but couldn't say anything.. she tried to move, to take a step or to reach out her hand towards her but she couldn't. She felt as if she was frozen, her feet glued to the ground.
Her golden honeysuckle brow rose as a smirk played across her face. Emma easily restrained her. Her cold finger tips pressed her warm forehead attempting to brainwash her memory. A cold mesmerizing stare came from a frigid soul who had power beyond what Blaire could even imagine.
"Sorry honey. We can't have any loose ends."
Her crystal eyes were not frightened anymore. They roared and screamed dominance with a lingering paralyzing glance. Her irises focused, locking eyes with Blaire's. Her brown eyes widened as she felt Emma peer inside her mind. It wasn't riveting. It felt as if Emma was peeling the memories off her neurons. Her eyes glared, increasing her power inside this fragile mind.
W-w-why?
A faint voice trembled inside Emma's mind. Emma simply read her mind as if it was an open book, slowly turning across its pages with no shame. Her brow raised ever so slightly in a poised fashion. Why, Emma heard. Emma could hear her very thoughts. They swung as if it were a pendulum. One moment, Blaire was afraid, the next she was angry, the next she was blank. Her mind went through such rapid changes.. too rapid for Emma to pinpoint its origin.
Interesting. You aren't as boring as I thought you were.
Emma danced her fingers to Blaire's temples, attempting to discover everything she could of this woman. Her fingers pressed slightly harder against her temples..No stone was left unturned for Blaire wasn't just a simple human and Emma now knew that. Resistance wasn't her forte against Emma. Her cranium was riveting with new insightful information. Appearances aren't quite what they seem in both cases.
What is this?
Emma reached in further to her mind as if she grasped everything in the palm of her hands. Blaire trembled as her lips gave out muffled whispers of whimpers. These whimpers didn't travel far because no one seemed to have heard anything.
Emma hmmed as she chuckled, "A late bloomer."
Emma kept searching willingly. Perhaps she could be of service to Shaw.
What is your gift? Won't you share it with me?
"I- I don't know what your talking about."
Yes, I know. You can't lie to me. I know everything about you.
"Get out. I'm not a novel. Go to the library if you want to read a novel."
Emma smirked before tsking. The fact was that Emma couldn't read what her abilities were. She couldn't read Blaire if Blaire didn't know.
"Reading minds is your power. You're misusing it."
How would you know what power is?
"I know that what you're doing is wrong. That'll suffice for now."
Why can't I find your gift?
"Because it's hiding from you. "
It?
"I don't like being seen on display."
Emma's eyes widened. Was this all her doing?
Are YOU hiding your gift from me?
Silence. Emma could no longer hear her voice.
Riptide!
Riptide's ignorance had boiled to a point where he began doubting Emma's command. What was taking so long? Riptide had grown tired of waiting. He pulled out a blue vial of a mysterious liquid.
"I'm done waiting Frost."
Riptide objected Blaire's vain located in the crook of her neck to pain as he injected the mysterious blue liquid into her veins. Blaire whimpered as her hot breath exhaled past her lips. The other mutant simply brushed her arm before activating his power.
"Stop it Riptide. She's one of us. You disobey because your patience is thin. How idiotic of you."
The mutant had the ability of passing energy to others. To activate the liquid, it needed enough energy to accelerate the cellular process inside the liquid . However on a mutant, instead of accelerating her cells it halted them. Adverse effects could be dangerous for mutants. Blaire stood frozen as Emma went through her mind as if she were on display. She could no longer sense her presence.
"I cannot do anything because of your idiocy." Emma hissed as she released Blaire from her grasp.
"You were taking too long. People could see us."
"And?"
"And, we can't keep Shaw waiting."
"It sounded more like you were afraid our less evolved kin.."
"Watch it Frost."
"I should be telling you the same. Azazel."
Azazel appeared on cue and in a bamf they disappeared leaving Blaire lifeless and now on the ground. Collapsing on the cobblestone her impact was head on . Her groceries had fallen everywhere. There laid Blaire, lifeless, empty and exposed. Everything slowly began getting darker and somewhat heavier. Her eyelids overweighed her determination to fight whatever was invading her system.
The liquid had made its way through Blaire's system in a matter seconds. Her immune system couldn't fight the invading liquid. It simply over took her and then it happened. Blaire's cells came to a halt. Everything in her body stopped. Her rapidly beating heartbeat slowing down until its movements became less and less frequent. Her body was heavy as if she was sinking. She exhaled her last breath into the night air. Was she doing to die there alone? Alone? Cold? Unwanted?
Something hid latent inside Blaire's cells. It simply remained hidden amongst the millions of cells inhabiting her body. Nonetheless it was. And it was ready to take on its host. A gene can lie dormant for years at a time. It needs the perfect amount of circumstance and coincidence to happen. Such people may never have to deal with the problem of developing their mutation. Or so they thought. Not the same principle may apply to everyone. One cell, the tiniest spark of life has just begun mitosis. Replication of a dormant inactive cell.
The spark needed to start the fire. Her millions of dna strands began reworking themselves. Suddenly an adrenaline rush came throughout her body like a live wire. A shocking sensation reliving her body. Mutation, the key to evolution inside a human being has just activated itself. The x-gene.. the one dormant cell hidden underneath her genetic makeup has now been activated. It's sole existence would forever change Blaire's life. Starting now Blaire was now a active mutant. Millions of mutated cells reworked themselves into her strands of DNA filling the gaps that had been weakened by the mysterious liquid.
The jumpstart activated all body responses triggering Blaire to open her eyes immediately. The inner ring of her irises expanded as her pupils did. Blaire was able to recollect herself only able to make it a few steps away before losing her balance and stumbling to the ground. She looked for anyone, someone. But there was no one. Blaire couldn't collect her thoughts or memories. Her body had a tingly sensation before she uttered one last word.
Help.
