48. Lashell
'Wake up!' Someon-Trey says. I am wide awake immediately. 'It's time.' He says and turns around. Two of the guards behind him walk over to me and grab me by my arms. I let myself getting dragged, half confused.
'Don't you worry, he is safe.' Trey says, before opening the door. 'He only has to see you suffer.' Then Trey opens the door and I can see Trace. He is in a glass cell. I heard those had unbreakable glass. I want to run over to him, but the guards stop me. 'Trace!' I yell. 'Lashell!' He yells back. I try to break free from the guards arms, but I am not strong enough. 'Stop working against. You won't get away from this.' A loud voice says. I turn around. It's Sheila, and Jenna is standing next to her. And... Another woman. 'Colby, if you'd like to activate the sim...?' Sheila smiles at the woman next to her. Colby chuckles. Colby... Where have I ever heard that name before...? Then, it's all coming back to me. Colby. Rebel base. How is she here...?! Did the betray Maysley?! 'What did you do to Maysley?!' I yell. Colby laughs. 'Don't you know, Lavanchy? She is dead. An explosion, caused by your kind. She got too behind. She is gone.' Colby smiles. I shake my head. Maysley is dead...?! No. She can't be. All what these people do is lie to me. Just like last time. Maysley is not dead. I am sure. 'Put her on the chair, son.' Sheila says, to Trey. Wait... Son?! Trey is Sheila's son?! That's why... That's why he worked with her... 'What?!' I ask. Sheila laughs. 'Like it wasn't clear.' She says. And Trey signs the guards that they have to put me on the chair. They push me on the chair, and not that careful. Jenna walks over to me to inject me. 'You shouldn't have been so stupid.' She says, and then I feel the needle in my skin. The last thing I hear is Trace's voice behind the glass.
'If you hurt her, I swear to God I will kill you!'
An empty area. Just white. I swallow. What would it be this time? I look around me, and a person is standing in front of me. Sheila. My face turns mad. I can kill her. After what she has done, she doesn't deserve to live. I have to kill her. Even though it's a simulation. And I want to kill her. Everything in my body wants to scream. But instead of screaming, I turn my hands into fists and think no longer about running. I throw myself at her and expect her to get hurt because of the bright floor. I hope she gets hurt very well... But when I reach her, she disappears and I fall on the ground. What?! I look up. The white is collapsing around me and the sundown shines through the broken pieces. When all the white has disappeared around me, I can see mountains. I sigh out of relief. This isn't that bad. I give myself a moment to enjoy this view. No, this is a simulation. The next horrible thing can start any moment. I shock goes through my body as the floor under me starts to shake. No. No. No. It's going to collapse. And I have nowhere else to go. I look over the edge. Should I jump? I only see green. No, wait. I see something blue. A lake. I think no more second about it. I throw myself over the edge.
Oh no. Wrong choice...
I start to panic as I see the water turn into stone. I am already falling. This is it. This is my end. I freaking knew I wouldn't survive. I close my eyes, and my back meets the ground.
Trace POV
I'm banging on the glass. She is falling. No one is doing anything. Was this supposed to happen? Her last simulation, the one where they kill her? The water turns into stone. I start to panic. If you die in simulations, you also die in real life. I turn my hands into fists. I keep banging on the glass, knowing that it won't break. Of course it won't. Who would make a glass cell with breakable glass? I look back at the monitor, and at that moment Lashell hits the stone floor.
My door gets opened, and I run out of the glass cell. To the simulation chair. 'I am sorry.' Sheila says. 'She is gone.' I swallow. She is gone. I look up at the guy who brought Lashell in. 'Why did you do this? This was supposed to happen, right? Killing her in her last simulation? The worst one?!' I shout. I am done. Trey smiles. 'That's how it goes.' He says. I turn my hands into fists. Not today. I draw back my fists and it hits his face before I know it. He falls on the floor, holding his cheek. I hit him hard. Good. He deserves it. I keep breathing in and out, heavily. 'Trey?!' Jenna runs over to the boy, Trey, to help him up. But I won't pay attention to her. 'There is no chance to save her, Weldon.' Sheila says, and she walks over to me. All I want right now is to grab one of her stupid squirts and push the content into her neck. Showing her how it is to be in one of those terrible things. But I hold back my anger and stand there. 'You killed her. You killed her, you... You...' I stutter. The words just won't come out. How can I have words? Lashell is dead. Because of her. Sheila grins and hands Colby her papers. 'And it weren't Minders who killed Maysley. It was YOU.' I say to Colby. Colby looks up, strokes over her jacket and makes slow paces towards me. 'Maybe you didn't know Minders that well, Weldon...' Colby says. Sheila grins from behind Colby. 'How could you ever love those sort of... parasites...?' Sheila laughs. I shake my head and look at Lashell's body on the chair. 'Because they are human too...' I start. I turn back to Sheila and Colby. 'They have a life too. They fight. They have emotions. Do you really think that they'll hurt any citizen? All what I see them do is saving the city...' I say. Sheila chuckles. 'Enough. All you are trying to do is defending the subject's Mind Sister. While in real, you know you can't. You know she is next. And all of your friends too...' 'Stop!' I say. Sheila laughs, but I am not concentrating on that. I am concentrating on a slow beep that I hear at the door of the lab. Oh god. I know this sound. The sound of a bomb. And no more seconds later, a loud noise can be heard through the lab and Sheila's guards are pointing their guns at the people who walk in.
