14. Lashell
I drop my weapon and grab my head. I fall on the ground. 'Oh, well... Seems like Eth completed his job.' Jenna laughs and the guards grab me by my arms. But that makes my head hurt even more. 'What job?' I ask. Jenna laughs. 'Oh didn't I tell you? Your sister is on her way. But don't you worry about her, she won't be for long.' She laughs. 'Stop it, now! Why in the hell would you kill people for their personality! That is pathetic! And weak! I mean, we don't cause harm!' I yell out of angriness. The headache is getting worse, and I scream out of pain. 'The more you'll work against, the worse the pain gets. Well, I have to go now. Have fun with your headache, little girl.' Jenna laughs. Tears stream off my face. The guards pull me up and pull me back to my cell. 'I guess that wound is fixed.' The leading guard says and pushes on my shot wound. I scream out of pain and tears roll off my face. It wasn't fixed. All this wasn't fixed. But... Maysley is on her way. They told me. And I just know she'll make it.
As they throw me into my cell, the intercom speaks again. 'Subject 29, prepare for your next simulation.' 'You're lucky this time.' The head guard says and grabs me by my arms.
'I'm impressed, Mrs. Lavanchy. Most people of your kind haven't gotten this far.' Sheila says while she walks around with a notebook. 'That's because I care about my family and friends.' I say, while I sit on the chair. This room gave me the chills now. Well, it already did but it remembers me of when Jenna shot me. I don't even know how long ago that is. But, the bullet it out of me. What is weird since they all hate me here. I hold my hand on the shot wound for a second. 'How long has it been since Jenna shot me?' I ask. 'A day.' Sheila says and smiles for a second. 'Please, just let me go and everyone else here. We promise, we won't get in your way.' I say. Sheila laughs for a second, while she inspects one of the monitors. 'Not before you are all freed from what you all are. Minders. Dangerous.' Sheila crosses her arms. 'For a laborant, you are really confident.' I say. Sheila laughs again. 'Well, thank you. You might be the first person here to say.' She says and grins. 'Ever heard of sarcasm?' I say and roll my eyes. Sheila grins. 'Of course. Lay down please.' Sheila says. 'And this time, please stay in your simulation.' I roll my eyes. She just can't stop rubbing it into my face. I sigh and lay down.
Luckily this time, I am not in a place where planets get bombed, or where I get drowned. No. I am in my old house. I walk around. I touch the dinner table for a second, then I walk over to the wall. At the moment when I see my mom's smiling face on one of the photos, I let one little tear fall. And, if I believed it or not, I felt a warm hand on my shoulder and I turn around. 'Mom?' I say. She smiles and grins a little. I look confused at her, but at the same time happy. I just knew she would appear in one of my simulations. 'Hello, Lashell.' My mom says with a smile. Tears stream off my face but at the same time I smile. 'I've missed you so much.' I say and hug her tightly. My mom puts her arms around me. 'I know, honey.' She says. When we let go of each other, I look at her. There is some dirt on her face from the explosion, but for the rest she seems fine. 'Listen to me, Lashell. No one in here can hear us now, so now I can finally tell you.' My mom says. I look confused. 'Tell me what?' I ask. 'Everything that they're doing right now, is because of me.' She says. I look at her, with a weird glare. 'What?' I ask. 'I know you're confused, Lashell. But it's true. You want to hear more?' She asks. I nod. 'Okay... Well... There is something that happened before the war. Before you were born. It's about your aunt and I.' She says. I know what she tries to say. 'You were Mind Sisters with her, right?' I ask. My mom nods. 'Yeah... Aunt Madilyn was really brave though... Just like you, she volunteered. But I had no chance to save her. My mother, your grandma, kept us in our home to keep me safe. After a couple weeks, it looked like she failed.' I see the tears in her eyes. 'What happened to her?' I ask. My mom looks at the floor. 'She... Well... She is not dead, but...' I see she has worries with speaking. 'Calm down, mom. Or you'll pass out.' I say. My mom shakes her head, and she wants to go on with talking. But I shush her. Then, I hear her gasp and I let go of her. I look at her, worried. 'Mom? Mom!' I yell. Her body collapses, and I hold her in her arms. 'Mom, what is happening?!' I ask. 'M...Madilyn...' She mumbles. 'What?!' I ask. 'F-Find her.' My mom says, and then she stumbles. 'No!' I yell. Tears roll of my face. 'Please. Please don't leave me again.' I felt like a crying baby, but I didn't care. I didn't even know if what happened to her was caused in the simulation, or in real. All I know is that I have to find aunt Madilyn. I don't know why, but I'll do it. To make my mother proud. I fall on my knees, next to my mother's body. I hold my hand on her cheek and cry softly. Not again...
I breathe in heavily. I get up. 'Good job, Mrs. Lavanchy. You'll get send back to your cell now.' Sheila says. I let myself getting pulled away by the guards. It didn't matter. Rachel could push that button any moment. I lay back in my cell and wait.
I wake up, when I hear the alarm go off. Yes, Rachel did it. I get up as the guards stand in front of my cell. 'Get out. This is an emergency. Don't you worry. You won't get freed.' One of the guards says. I walk out of the cell and try to find the exit, but then I realize I should find my aunt Marilyn. And I've got the feeling that she won't be far away. I run over to an empty hallway that I've never seen before. It look like one at the hospital. It was so bright. The lights were flickering, what creeped me out. I walk through the hallway. As I look very well, I think I see someone standing in the dark part at the end of the hallway. But I can't walk closer. Someone grabs my arm. 'And what do you think you're doing?' It's a guard. He pushes me on the floor, and loads his gun. 'What are you doing here?' He asks. I swallow. 'I am lost.' I say. The guard chuckles. 'Of course. Like I didn't see you going in here on purpose. Get out of here. This is trespassing.' He says and points the gun closer to me. 'I'm... Sorry...' I say, dumbfounded. I stand up, and walk over to the noisy hallway.
'Of course she did. You won't believe how curious she is. Get her.' I hear Sheila's voice say through the door. Footsteps come close, and I sit on the bench next to the door, pretending nothing happened. The door opens. 'Get in.' The guard says and pulls me up.
'Well... Lashell Lavanchy... You made it through your first simulations. How was it?' Sheila asks. I sigh. 'Stupid.' I say. 'I understand why you think that. But, tell me. Do you think these simulations will work?' She asks. She bends over the table and plays with the pen in her hands. 'Of course not. This is the most stupid thing I've ever heard.' I say. Sheila nods. 'I think I just let you have your opinion.' She stands up and shows something on a monitor. 'Oh... Well...' She says and presses something on the screen. It's a security camera, what is hanging on the side of a wall. 'Do you remember this location?' Sheila asks. I try to look very well. Then I remember. 'Yes, it used to be a underground parking garage. Actually the one my mom and I parked when we went to the mall.' I say. 'Good... And, have you seen this too?' She asks. She presses on another button and now the camera from another angle appears. Guards are surrounding a group of people. 'Do you know who these people are?' Sheila asks. I slowly shake my head, and with that, Sheila zooms in. 'Now?' She asks. I look closely. That bow... Those clothes... The hair... 'Maysley...' I whisper. I haven't seen her face since the day I've left the farmer's house. 'She is coming for me. I knew it.' I whisper. Sheila turns off the monitor and turns around. 'Yes, indeed. But, she won't ever get you back.' Sheila chuckles and gives the guards a sign that they have to bring me somewhere. And this time, it's not my cell. When they open the door, I know it's something horrible.
