11. Maysley

It's panic. That's the first feeling I feel, when the guards surround us. Clary runs to Drew and kneels at his side. The guards come closer into sight. I notice their uniforms. White top, with white pants. They have their guns loaded, and pointed at us. 'D-Drew?' Clary pleads, cupping his face with her hand, trying to search some life into him. 'It's no use.' A voice says behind me. I turn towards the voice. A man in a neat uniform stands in front of me. His face doesn't look like the soldiers' though. His looks normal. Like a normal man, you see going to his office. Wait, office? 'I'm Eth.' He holds out his hand, waiting for me to shake his. But I don't. I frown, 'And why should we care?' I ask him, angrily. I mean, I don't like to be mean to others, but he just knocked out Drew. Our friend. He chuckles. 'You definitely got the fire she described.' This time I aim my bow, at him. 'What did you say?' I demand, doing my best not to shoot him right here and now. He takes one step further, coming closer to me. 'Juliette Lavanchy.' He tells me. My eyes grow big, my mother? 'How do you know her?' I raise my eyebrow, my anger replaced with a confused feeling. His facial expression turns grim. 'I've known her since she gave birth to you and your sister.' Well. That's not what I expected, at all. I look behind me. Rye looks pretty dumbfounded, while Clary just frowns. Well, at least she never changes. I turn back to Eth. 'And, what is your purpose with us?' I ask him, trying not to waste the moment we are still alive. He laughs and looks around him, at the guards, who laugh with him. 'Well, our mission was to get rid of your friends, and capture you along with your sister.' It all happens so fast at this moment. Rye runs to my side, and holds his arm in front of me, as if to protect me. 'You're not going anywhere near her.' He spits. Eth raises one eyebrow. 'Oh. I wouldn't dare to.' I can feel Rye grow impatient already. 'Then why did you knock him out?' He says, gesturing towards Drew, who still is unconscious on the floor. 'Well, that was just a move to get your guys' attention, without you killing us.' I roll my eyes. 'You think by knocking someone out, you get our attention? Well, you sure got to be one hell of a confident one.' He chuckles, and I see Rye staring at me. He softly nudges my side. 'Don't make him win.' He whispers in my ear. I nod my head, 'Don't worry. I won't.' I look back at Eth, and find him looking back at me. It's almost like a stare battle. No one says a word, just the communication with our eyes. How long has he known my mother? I mean, he told me himself he was there at mine and Lashell's birth. But was he a family friend? Could I trust him?

'I got to say, I love your fire. But you're wasting it.' He breaks our eye contact, and without any sound he gives his soldiers a command to stand down. The soldiers let their guns down, and take of their helmets. 'My name is Eth Hesley. I was an old friend of your mother.' He tells me, and comes closer to me. This time I don't step back. I feel like I can trust him. It's a weird feeling to take of off a stranger. But I'm struggling to find out if I've seen him before. His presence seems somehow, nice. 'Let me explain.' He starts. 'I once made a promise to your mother. That I'd look out for you and your sister. And that's what I am going to do. One day I got a message from the internal office that I was nominated to be an head officer. I got through. And the day I heard my mission, which was finding you and your sister, I immediately accepted it.' My confused state has been wiped away. It now refills itself with guilt.

'Oh.' I begin. 'I'm so sorry, that I not trusted you since the start.' He shows me a small smile. 'It doesn't matter, I maybe should have connected with you, differently.' Gesturing towards the guards and Drew. I smile slightly, and ignore the angry glance, rye is giving me. 'So, what now?' I ask. Just as Eth is about to say something, someone else is him first.

'Now, we kill you and your little friends.' I turn, and see that the guards have pointed their guns at all of us. 'Mr. Foset, I expected the good in you.' Eth huffs. The guard that spoke the words from before, rolls his eyes, and points his gun at him. 'Mrs. Miller already had doubts in you, because of your former relation with Mrs. Lavanchy.' He grins. 'And now we know for sure. Traitors need to be punished.'

'Please,' I plead. He looks at me, his grin turning into a confused gaze. 'There has to be something Sheila has done to you.' He chuckles, in a devilish way. 'You really think that? Well, that's pathetic.' I notice how Rye shifts beside me. He's angry, I can feel it. 'Don't talk to her like that.' He spits out. I almost don't recognize him. I hate it when he's angry, but I get that he only wants to help me. This time it's me who nudges his side. 'I can take care of myself, but thanks.' I whisper to him. He shows me a short smile, but it's replaced by his worried glance.

'Anyways,' The guards starts. 'We are glad that you spilled your secret out. That makes it easier to do this.' He shifts his gun towards Clary and shoots. 'NO!' I scream, and quickly push her out of the way. The bullet flies past me, and makes hard contact with the wall behind me. 'You shouldn't have done that, little girl.' He now aims for me. As fast as I can, I take an arrow out of the quiver that's on my back, and place it in my bow. I hear his gun go off, and I almost feel its presence coming right at me. But I aim my bow at him, and as I roll over and dodge the bullet, I let the arrow go. With a gasp, the arrow makes contact with his chest. He falls to the ground, just like the other soldier did when Rye shot him. I shake the thought away and see the other guards move to attack us. Behind Rye, who is turned into my direction, I spot a guard ready to shoot him. 'Rye! Behind you!' I shout at him. He turns towards the guard, and quickly dodges the bullet. He loads his gun and aims. 'Today, Underwood!' I hear Trace shout behind me. Rye shoots the guard down. That makes us with eight guards left. Clary is busy fighting of two, and Trace is running after one. I change my gaze towards Eth, and see him struggling with his own gun. I run towards him and take the gun out of his hands. He gives me a confusing glance. I smash the gun into the wall, one time, and try to load it again. This time it does. 'Thanks.' Eth smiles. I smile back, but almost forget about the guards coming our way. 'No problem. Now let's fight those bitches.' He grins and runs off to attack a guard from behind.

I feel a kick in my back, and fall to the ground. I moan, feeling the pain in my chest already starting to burn. My bow has fallen at my side, along with the arrow that was put in place. 'This one is for Sheila.' A cold voice says. He kicks my side. I scream out in pain. I close my eyes for a couple of seconds, and when I open them, I feel another kick at my side. I raise my head and look for help. Rye is helping Clary fight the two guards, Trace is shooting down a guard, and Eth is nowhere to be seen. I quickly roll on my back, and my eyes meet two grey ones looking back at me. He draws his leg back, to kick me again. But I grab the bow and single arrow that fell beside me, and aim it at him. 'Goodbye, sucker.' I spit out. The arrow shoots right through his head. I quickly look away, trying not to gag at the disgusting wound. I get on my feet, and notice two other guards running my way. I smoothly take one arrow out of my quiver and aim it at the first one. I let go, and he falls to the ground. Just as I am about to grab another arrow, the guard is too close.

It all happens so slowly. The first thing that happens is that I turn my body around, and run towards my left side. While I catch a glimpse of his gun, aiming at me. I don't see what is happening. The only thing I can, is hear how his gun goes off. But the bullet never hits me. Confused, I turn back around, and find the guard laying on the ground. I shift my eyes towards the body standing next to it, Eth. 'you helped me, And I helped you. It's the least I could do.' He says. I chuckle, 'Thanks.'

'Guys, I think we beat them.' I hear Trace call out. 'I don't think so.' A voice spits. My gaze quickly falls to my left side, where a gun has been pointed at Trace. Rye runs up to Trace, and pulls out his own gun. Just on time, he is able to shoot him. I watch as the guard falls to the ground. 'Thanks, bro.' Trace gasps, as he knocks on Rye's back. 'Anytime.' He smiles. I cough, and they turn to me. 'So, what now?' I ask. Clary and Eth walk towards us, and Clary opens her mouth. 'Now we take Drew, and get the hell out of here.' We all laugh, and I give her a nod. 'You still got your fire, Clare.' She winks at me. 'I know.'
