Chapter 4: The Transport
The next day, I found myself late to the class and also tired. I sat at the back wondering why I did not hear the alarm when I saw Lexie furiously scribbling in her book. I wrote a note and projected it in her book. Anything she would write would appear in my book instantly.
Don't freak out. But what are you writing?
I am working on ideas for my project.
What project?
Specialization class.
What ideas have you got?
Apparently, plants react to magically charmed objects like crystals and stones. So I am working on that.
You should keep it down. You are not exactly hiding it.
If I noticed this in my dazed state, I would be sure professor would also notice.
Ladies. I want you working on changing objects not passing messages back and forth. Next time you will be serving detention.
He did notice then. We were busted. Nodding, we set up our table. Who knew Professor Hemmy could spot us passing notes? Anyway, I concentrated on changing a pen to a sheet. This was easy. I needed to think of it and try to change the projection of the pen. If I concentrated right, it would be done. So after a few attempts, there was a multicolor sheet. I still had to write a report about it. It could wait. I sat unfocussed till the class ended. Listening to the changing mechanism in the class would make anyone go to sleep.
I was really looking forward to eating something. And I found that we had our classes suspended due to some unforeseen circumstances as the notification circulator stated.
Whew. It was good. Time to rest. I picked up some sandwiches to keep me occupied and got settled in my room. It was nice to read something which I did not have to write as a report. And also, it was hard to believe I was exhausted after one day of my specialization classes. I read for some time, played music, ate, watched a movie and was having time of my life when someone knocked on my door.
"What's up, Chris?"
He was, like, in few words, mission ready. Black jacket with a backpack, a cap and with a serious look.
"Wanna come with me? Dad wants me to check up on the new construction site."
"What are they constructing?"
"Roads.Buildings.Who knows?"
"Do you even know where it is? And why are you going? And who gave me permission to go? "
"First, I have the address. Second, he is kinda busy at the moment and I often check on his work. Third, I don't think you need permission to go anywhere.
You never ask." He said shaking his head.
"Fair enough. Should I expect rain on the way?"
"I think you can expect a lot of rain. Get warm clothes."
"Then why are we leaving now? Wouldn't it be harmful?"
"It is urgent, I guess. He told me to get it as fast as possible."
"I will meet you in the yard in ten."
I got dressed quickly and found him looking at the paintings in the art room.
"Hey, ready to go?"He turned around.
"Yeah."
"You got a car? And what's the name of the place we are visiting?"
"Dad let me borrow his car. Don't spill anything or I am dead."
He took out his phone and showed me a message.
"These are coordinates, and by the numbers, I'm guessing it's near Forest of Illusions."
He nodded and started the car. We had at least one hour to reach our destination and the sky was dark. There were black clouds everywhere. It was like we were in a closed box. The surroundings looked ominous. Everything seemed still as we moved away towards the fast approaching forest. The trees cast black shadows on the path and slowly it began to thunder. I was seriously contemplating my decision of coming here.
"You better return me home safe, or I will haunt you forever."
He rolled his eyes.
" I did not exactly force you, so stop whining. Some rain is not gonna harm us."
It was not "some rain."Winds were blowing full speed, and I was internally freaking out. I was finally happy to see we arrived at the place which had no buildings yet. There was a small Office with papers strewn around and nothing else. The furnishings were minimum. A sofa, a table, and a chair. It looked like well someone's office.
"Why are we here?"
"I was told to get files from the construction site, and I am inferring that construction has not started here."
"The files appear to have been tampered with. Papers are lying around here. Is this what your dad working on?"
"I don't know. Let's gather those papers."
We collected all papers and frankly they contained peculiar stuff, like pages from a history textbook. We saw an interesting paragraph on Sameyra. I did not know she was our queen.
Queen Sameyra was quite distressed about the way Samay was acting. He strongly believed that kings or queens should not be voted by council members. Many people believed that all people must have equal right to vote their next queen. The thing everyone forgot was that Sameyra was voted by all projectors. There was a final test among all those who were running to become ruler of the projector world. Samay was unhappy when they chose his sister and not him. He started rebelling and got many people working for his cause. They were called Dark projectors because they always wore dark clothes. He started protests and everything in his power to anger Sameyra. But she ruled well and when next ruler was voted, she disappeared. It was funny how no one noticed that always the same family was elected and from then people began forgetting Sameyra, her brother, and the Royals came in power.
Royal family. My family. I always thought people voted us but I never noticed that only my family ruled. But the ruling is not how it worked now. We had a Council which had power, people who can protest at anything and the king acted like a President. Things had changed now.
"Can you find where other papers like this one are?"
"Where did you get that?"
"There. I said pointing towards the corner."
"This paper is different. It looks old and no other paper here matches it."
"Then how did it come here?"
"I don't know. I don't think my dad knew about this paper. He would not have sent me otherwise."
We came outside and saw that it was still raining. It would be risky if we drove in this weather. I also would risk a huge lecture and grounding if I missed my dinner and my parents finding me leaving without permission.
"How do you think we will return?"
"I am thinking."
" We are stuck here and will die if we are here after a few days. The storm will kill us by then. I don't think this office can protect us from whatever that is out there. And not to mention there are animals in the forest."
"I know. Stop yelling. I am also stuck here if you hadn't noticed. Let me think."
"Hey, did you learn how to transport?"
"We have the same classes together. If I had learned you would have known."
"Just asking. You learn everything fast. You would get it on the first try probably."
"Nah. I know its theory. Let me try once."
He closed his eyes, and nothing happened for a whole minute. Then air around him shimmered and he became invisible. He later appeared near the door. He fell from exhaustion.
"Impressive for a first try. If you are this tired for 5 feet, you cannot do this to take us back. And I don't know how to do it."
"I could tell you. You can move objects, right? Think of the same happening but instead of object think about you moving fast and arriving where you want. You have to concentrate really hard because this is complicated stuff to explain."
"I think I get it. But don't you think we should concentrate together? I mean I can give you additional energy to transport and you could transport us."
"That works for me."
We joined hands, and I imagined giving up my energy in a slow wave. It would overwhelm him otherwise and split his head open with all the energy flowing between us. It should have worked because I felt like my energy had drained and I started feeling woozy. It was hard keeping my eyes open so I gave in.
