House Of Memories
Lorelei's POV
"I'm sorry, what?" Lorelei asked. Elizabeth just kept grinning. "Like I said, we're planning on adopting you" Elizabeth repeated herself. Lorelei was still surprised. She never signed up for this. "No! I don't want to be adopted!" Lorelei yelled, still standing in the rain. She was getting soaked but she didn't care. Her real parents were out there. She knew that. She wasn't am orphan. Her parents were still alive. But did they love her? Malcom always told her that her parents never loved her. He implanted that idea in her head. But that doesn't mean they don't love her, does it? They only sent her away for her safety, right? Lorelei had had a lot of thoughts swarming in her head. "Lorelei honey, are you okay?" Elizabeth asked. Lorelei mumbled in response. "I'm sorry, I can't hear you" Elizabeth said. "I'm not fucking okay!" Lorelei shouted. Elizabeth was appalled by the comment. A few seconds later Kyle came running and stood next to his mother. "What's going on? Why are you standing in the rain" he asked Lorelei. He wore a confused expression. Lorelei and Elizabeth looked at each other, not saying a word. "Mom? Lorelei? " Kyle was starting to get worried. "I-I can't do this. What was I thinking?!" Lorelei said before storming off. "Lorelei, wait!" Elizabeth was about to go after her but Kyle stopped her. "Mom, no! Let her go" he demanded. Lorelei kept on running. She ran deep into the forest. She tried remembering the way back to her old house. What was she thinking anyway? That she could go live with another family rent free and eat all of their food and go to school again? This is reality, Lorelei told herself. Bad things happen in reality. Not everyone deserves a happy ending. Lorelei stopped when she saw the house. She almost couldn't recognise it anymore. There was police tape surrounding it. The door was left open. Idiots, Lorelei thought to herself. She hopped over the tape. Once she got inside, her jaw dropped. Everything was covered in plastic sheets. Some things were missing. Like grandmother Lucinda's ugly vase. Lorelei let out a sigh. She wondered where she has gone to. Lorelei looked outside. The rain had gotten harder. Lorelei decided to stay for a while.
It was starting to get dark. Lorelei got hungry. Luckily, she didn't eat her lunch. She took out the brown paper bag from her schoolbag and took out her lunchbox. Inside the brown paper bag was a note. Lorelei read it.
I hope you're enjoying your time with us. We've grown fond of you. I love and care for you
Love
Elizabeth
Lorelei read it twice then stated at it. She scrunched it up. She was better alone. Always has been, always will be. She threw the paper across the kitchen. She felt a tear escaping her eye and running down her cheek. She wiped it off and stared at the sandwiches and cookie Elizabeth 0 aced for her. Then she heard footsteps. She looked up from her lunch. She looked around for a weapon or anything she can use as protection. She quietly walked to the drawer and pulled out a knife. The footsteps got louder. She walked closer to the sound of the footsteps. The person came into the kitchen. They wore a black hoodie and grey sweatpants but they looked wet. Lorelei didn't waste any time. She pinned them against the wall and held the knife to their necks. "Who are you?", Lorelei demanded. The figure held their hands up in defeat. "Whoa! Whoa! It's me!" The figure took of the hood of their hoodie. It was Kyle. "What are you doing here? Also, were you following me?" Lorelei asked, not removing the knife from Kyle's neck. "Would you put that down first?" Kyle pointed at the knife with his nose. Lorelei cocked her head and glared at him, as if she was still weighing her options. Before she knew it, Kyle turned the tables around. He grabbed her wrists then pinned her to the wall. He held her hands above her head. His face came closer to hers. Their noses were almost in touching. Lorelei could feel his breath on her neck. She just stood there shocked. "Wha- I-" she stuttered. "Drop it", Kyle demanded. Lorelei's grip on the knife got tighter. Why didn't she want to put the knife down? She knew Kyle. Sort of. Was it the fact that she didn't like taking orders? Especially from Kyle. Kyle's grip on her wrists got tighter. Lorelei flinched. "I said drop it" Kyle repeated himself. This time, Lorelei listened and dropped the knife. Once she did, Kyle smirked and let her go. Lorelei rubbed her wrists. Kyle left marks like he did before when he caught her eavesdropping. Kyle looked around. "Hey! You still haven't answered my questions!" Lorelei protested. Kyle rolled his eyes. "I'm obviously here for you. When you left, mom was a wreck. And I didn't quite follow you. I just figured you'll come here", he answered. Lorelei looked at the floor. It was clean. "Well I'm starving", Kyle rubbed his stomach then his saw Lorelei's lunch. "Can I have one of those?", he asked already taking a cookie. "I'll get you something warmer", Lorelei said before heading upstairs.
Kyle's POV
"I'm not fucking okay!"
Kyle was in his room. He was about to take a nap then he heard someone shouting. He ran downstairs to see what was going on. He saw Lorelei was agitated. His mother was shocked. "What's going on? Why are you standing in the rain?" he asked Lorelei. But it seemed as of both of them were ignoring him. What the hell is going on? Kyle thought. "Mom? Lorelei?" he was starting to get worried. What were they talking about. "I-I can't do this. What was I thinking?!" Lorelei said before storming off. "Lorelei, wait", Kyle's mom was about to go after Lorelei then he stopped her. "Mom, no! Let her go!" he demanded. "But what if she gets hurt?" she asked. "She's a grown woman. She can fend for herself", he reassured her but that seemed as if it didn't work. "No! She needs someone to look after her. She has a bit if a temper. Who knows what she'd be doing" she started sobbing. It pained Kyle to see his mother cry. It's not the first time but every time if feels like it is. His dad made her stressed and agitated. But she always knew how to put a smile on everyone's face. Dad hurts her all the time. He never knew what she saw in him. That's why he started this little business, thinking that he could be able to take care of his mother. "Mom look at me" he held his mother's face. "I will find Lorelei, okay?", he said before hugging her. He could feel her nodding her head. He helped his mother up then ran out into the rain. He ran in the direction Lorelei ran. Then he got lost. "Where could she be?" he asked himself. He found Lorelei a nuisance at times but he didn't mind that. She was too stubborn and hot headed. He knew if he doesn't find her immediately, she'd do something irrational. He kept walking straight, looking around. The rain got harder. He wished you should've dressed for the occasion. He only wore a hoodie and sweatpants. He was running around bare foot. He kept walking for a while until he saw the place was familiar. "Of course", he said. He started running towards Lorelei's old house. Once he got there, he saw police tape surrounding the place. "What the-" he said. He went under the tape. He saw the door was open so he knew Lorelei was inside. He went inside and looked around. Everything in the house was covered with plastic sheets. He walked slowly because his feet had blisters. He took a peak at the lounge. Nope, he thought. He went to the kitchen. Then all of a sudden, he gets pinned against a wall and a knife was held on his throat. He looked at who was holding the knife. It was Lorelei. He was a bit taller than her so she had to look up at him. He looked at those golden eyes. They were beautiful. "Who are you?" Lorelei demanded. "Whoa! Whoa! It's me!" He took off the hood from his hoodie. He thought that would make things better but the opposite hand. She pushed the knife a bit deeper to his throat. "What are you doing here? Also, were you following me?" She asked. Was she being serious? Did he really asked her after the stunt she pulled. He grabbed her wrists and pinned her against the wall. He bought his face closer to hers. She stuttered. "Drop it", he demanded. But she only held it tighter. Oh, a brat I see. His grip on her wrists only got tighter. "I said drop it", he repeated himself. She actually listened and dropped it. Good girl. He let go of her wrists. He looked around at the place. It was small yet cozy. "Hey! You still haven't answered my questions!" she protested. Kyle rolled his eyes. Since when is she the dumb one? "I'm obviously here for you. When you left, mom was a wreck. And I didn't quite follow you. I just figured you'd be here" he carried on looking around. Then he got hungry. He rubbed hos stomach then saw some sandwiches and cookies on the table. "Can I have one of those?" he asked. He didn't wait for Lorelei to respond. He took a cookie. His mom made the best chocolate chipped cookies. "I'll get you something warmer", Lorelei said before running upstairs.
Lorelei's POV
"Seriously?" Kyle asked. Lorelei made him take a bath before changing. She took out Malcom's old man pants and one of her big hoodies she left. "You wanna be naked all night?", Lorelei asked. Kyle smirked and raised an eyebrow. "Eww" Lorelei scrunched her nose. She tossed the hoodie in his face. "Get dressed." When he was done, he went downstairs. Lorelei stifled a laughter. "Don't you dare", Kyle glared at her. "Come on", they went to the kitchen and had the sandwiches and cookies for desert. "So, what was all that about?" Kyle asked. "What?" Lorelei was confused. "The reason why you ran off", Kyle said. "Oh", Lorelei looked at her cookie. Kyle looked at her waiting for an answer. "Well, your mom wants to adopt me", she said. Kyle's eyes went wide then his expression went bland. "Oh. That again", he said not looking pleased. "Again?" Lorelei asked. "Mom always asked Dad to have another child. Wanting a baby girl. But Dad never wanted to. So mom wanted to adopt a baby girl. I guess she liked you to be her daughter", he explained. "I think she only told me the first part. I never knew she wanted to adopt a child", Lorelei confessed. Kyle shrugged. "A lot goes on in that house", he said. Lorelei raised her eyebrow. "Never mind. Forget what I said. I told mom we're fine and that we'll be back in the morning. Let's get some shut eye", he said. "First idea you've ever had", Lorelei teased. Kyle chuckled. "Hey, I'm smort too", he said. "Yeah, because a smart person pronounces smart as smort." They both chuckled.
