Well, turns out the idea was pretty damn awesome, not counting your body standing there like some kinda paralyzed dee-ta-dee statue after the key is put in and turned - You get an 'out of body experience'. 

Essentially, once the key is 'activated', another you appears as well as some kind of doorway that acts as a portal into your mind. For Bode, it was a giant toy chest in his room that he went into -  

When his siblings found him, he was able to bring them into it as well

There was a part here that showed another 'living' Bode, a 'living manifestation of his Glee'. In your mind, your emotions take on lives of their own

This part I found really nifty. All those little Jack-in-the-Boxes act as Bode's memory stores, each one containing a memory. Once opened and looked into, they could view that memory as if living it again.

Now, from what I've gathered from looking things up, they've changed things between the comics and the show, as usual, so don't kill me, I'm just the middleman...chick...person...thingy. 

In the show, Bode's mind is laid out as an upbeat game room full of the things he loves and thinks about, obviously, and just like all kids, it's a flippin' mess with no really functioning order known aside from his own weirdness
