Chapter 17
Still gotta look through all the songs yo holla so until then, it's business as usual I do suppose
Third person pov
"You okay, kid?" Tsukauchi asked as Harper dragged herself out to where all the police cars had quietly convened at the back of the stadium. Sero was in the back of one of their windowless vans, quirk-suppressing cuffs restraining both his wrists and ankles. Though Sero's power was more of a mutation, they would still prevent him from shooting tape at anyone or anything in an attempt to escape. Three highly-trained officers sat back there with him, though he was still out. Midnight predicted he would be for the next few hours or so. "She looks done. We'll have to order take-out tonight. No kid needs this much stress. Still, she did a good job. Didn't engage him once she found, but was still subtle enough about it that we were able to make a valid excuse. We got lucky."
"Perfectly fine. Flawless. Couldn't be better." Harper grumbled, coming to a stop next to Hound Dog. He'd talked to Sero after the events of the USJ, and was familiar with all of 1-A's files. He gave Harper a wolfish grin that was both understanding and pitying at the same time. She sighed heavily in response. At least she was out of that damned stadium. The noise was still nearly unbearable, even outside the arena, but not nearly as deafening as being in the center of it was.
"I'm sure you'll be able to go home soon, pup." Hound Dog patted her head like one would a small animal. Harper really didn't have the energy to give a shit. "Kid looks ruff. How much has she been sleeping? I can practically see her tail drooping!"
"Yeah, let's hope so." Harper responded with a sigh, letting her shoulders drop when she finally realized how tense they were. Sero was caught, though the League definitely knew something was up with her now. Kurogiri was her biggest concern. The mobility he had and could give to others terrified her to no end. Harper was pretty sure she now had a phobia of abrupt drops. Not that she could really think of anyone who actually liked those. If she saw the portal-user again, she'd be sure to do that odd pushing thing again. Whatever it was. She wanted to test it out, but didn't want to risk hurting anyone either.
"How do you feel about orange chicken and lo mein tonight?" Tsukauchi asked. "Our show also comes on tonight. Score. We can bond and relax. I wonder if she'd be up for getting milkshakes on the way home. Dairy queen is having a special. Buy two milkshakes, get another completely free. Sounds worth looking into to me. Maybe I should invite Toshi as well... for dinner. He'd never leave while Izuku was competing."
"Only if you get extra fried rice. I swear to fuck you go through that shit faster than I go through our Rocky Road." Harper blew a strand of hair out of her face. She was considering cutting it soon. At least her bangs needed to get shortened if she wanted them to stop getting in her face. Perhaps she'd just invest in some bobby pins like a normal person instead of chopping it all off like she always did. Hound Dog snickered at their interaction.
Harper yawned, cracking her neck as she stretched. Hound Dog's tail swept against her legs as it lazily swished behind him, but it was oddly comforting. Harper wondered if she should get some sort of emotional support animal. It would have to be something boring. Dogs got too excited. They noticed anything and everything, and their thoughts ran at a fast pace. Cats were cynical, but generally too negative and hateful to be healthy as support. Harper wanted something relaxed that she could bury her quirk in. She'd have to ask Tsukauchi about it...
"What the hell is going on out here?" Harper jumped slightly, her and Hound Dog both whirling around. Tsukauchi had gone off to speak with Aizawa, seeing as Sero was-- had been-- his student. The brunette felt herself pale at the sight of the dumpster fire himself. That's right. Of course Endeavor of all people would notice something was up and take it upon himself to investigate. "I knew that little story Present Mic came up with was bullshit. Midnight didn't put that student to sleep due to an impending heart issue. Something else is going on here, and I demand to know what it is."
He spit his words harshly and pointedly, as though daring someone to defy him. Even worse, they were very clearly directed at her. Harper let Hound Dog move to stand in front of her, his lips peeling back to reveal sharp teeth. She heard a growl rumble in the chest of the irritated guidance counselor. Once again, she resisted the urge to sign. And to call Endeavor a dick bag. Harper had enough enemies as it was. She really didn't fancy the idea of making one of the Number Two Hero, no matter how shitty he happened to be.
"You don't have the authority to question any of my students." Hound Dog snarled venomously. "Vermin. Who does he think he is, barking at a pup in such a manner? Just because he's the number two hero doesn't mean he can bare his teeth at anyone his wants to! This is none of his business. Hopefully he'll leave, but if not, I'll make him."
Endeavor didn't outwardly react, eyes shifting away from Harper, who had awkwardly crossed her arms over her chest and was shuffling her feet. This sucked. Hound Dog glared in a manner that was quite threatening, ears pricked and a snarl resting on his lips. Harper bit the inside of her cheek so she wouldn't sigh and draw the flame hero's attention back to herself, choosing to clue into the man's thoughts instead. Probably not the best idea, but if she was going to hear them either way from proximity, she may as well let them ring clear rather than letting them sound under water.
"Hot damn. I should have looked a bit closer at UA's teacher registry, or paid more attention to the papers Shoto brought home." Endeavor's thoughts purred, and Harper flinched with surprise. Her expression fell slack in an instant, any color in her face draining. No. Not today. "Look at those arms. So strong, just like his legs. I can just feel those claws digging into me. And that snout. Imagine that tongue, running up my dirty-"
"Wh-Whoa! Whoa, o-okay!" Harper all but screamed, drawing both their attention right back to her. No. Endeavor was a furry. He was a furry, and was totally into Hound Dog. She was going to vomit, and quite possibly cry. Behind her, the van holding Sero began to pull away, along with several cruisers. She knew she'd jinxed it when she thought things would be fine. Where was Kurogiri? She wouldn't mind if he kidnapped her right here, right now. Anything to unhear that, or at least not hear anymore. "Mr. Hound Dog, I think I'm traumatized. I'm going into shock. It's all hitting me now. Delayed reaction Where can I find ah- u-uh, a blanket?"
Ignore Endeavor's sexual thoughts. Ignore Endeavor's sexual thoughts. God, why were Endeavor's sexual thoughts so loud?! She didn't want to hear about collars or leashes or literally any of that. What did Shoto grow up with? Holy shit, no. Endeavor's arousal was disgusting. Harper was never going to be able to look at him the same way again. Her hatred for him was strong, but she'd be damned if her disgust wasn't stronger. Nothing was worse than this. She'd listen to Koda's murder plans on loop if it meant never having to hear that again.
"You are?!" Hound Dog looked startled. "Endeavor must have triggered it, that bastard! No matter. The traitor has left the premise, so there's no reason for us to stay here. I'm sure Tsukauchi will be taking her home soon. Though, it's pawsible he'll need to go to the station... We'll figure something out for you, pup!"
"Definitely." Harper squeaked out, eyes wide. She wanted to die. No, this was different. She didn't just wish for death. She could feel something inside her literally dying. A part of her was shriveling up slowly. Glancing at Endeavor, she could see his tongue flick out from between his lips to wet them, his eyes trained on Hound Dog's tail. Her stomach churned, sweat pouring down her face. Why, why, why, why? Just why? Did Harper do something to deserve this? Was sleeping fourteen hours a day for a month straight a sin that she was now paying for? She felt like a kid who'd just walked in on her parents having sex, only they hadn't noticed her yet.
"Let's get you away from this... man. There's an ambulance- ruff- over there." Hound Dog sent Endeavor a glare, but Endeavor's arousal only spiked. Harper turned away with a gag. Hound Dog was perfectly nice and she could easily see someone liking him just fine, but this was Endeavor, who was a furry and just... holy shit. Holy shit, why was this the most terrifying part of today? "Man. More like asshole. Bastard. Douche bag. Cat."
"You know what? It's not shock! I'm just hungry and need to relax!" Harper decided with an unconvincing laugh, grabbing the arm of her guidance counselor and steering him in the general direction of Tsukauchi, who was chatting with Sansa. "You know what? You should come get milkshakes with us! It would make me feel so, so much better if you were as far away from Endeavor as humanely possible."
"Endeavor? Why? Did you hear his thoughts, pup?" Hound Dog blinked down at her. "She's sweating up a storm! She looks pale, tail-tucked, ears back... just what did she hear? And why do I need to be away from him?"
"I'm protecting you, Mr. Hound Dog." Harper wheezed out. "That's all you need to know."
Hound Dog looked even more concerned, but allowed himself to get shoved into the passenger's seat of Tsukauchi's car nonetheless. The detective raised an eyebrow and shot her a glance, but didn't completely turn away from Sansa. Harper took a deep breath. She could feel Endeavor's eyes on her, but put up every mental block she could wrangle into position. She closed in on herself as much as she could. Not an easy feat, especially with the migraine she was sporting, but it was well worth it.
She'd heard perverted thoughts before, and sex fantasies. Bakugo and Mineta both had some pretty out-there ones, and Sero had too before he was revealed to be a lying bitch with an ulterior motive. But that... the number two hero, child-abusing douche bag, was apparently a furry, and... and those thoughts... really, chains? Cat ears? The perversion ran horrifyingly deep in that man. It was once again a feeling so strong it made her physically ill.
Tsukauchi finished talking to Sansa, tipping his hat as the other officer turned away. Harper tapped her foot impatiently and took a few more deep breaths. She was alright. Sero was taken away, she didn't have to go back in the arena, and everything was fine. Endeavor had huffed and stomped off to go interrogate someone else for the time being, putting his thoughts on poor, asexual Hound Dog to rest. Hound Dog was a good guidance counselor and overall a pretty nice guy from what she'd gathered from him thus far. To have him thought of like that with her standing there... fuuuuck.
"So, do you want to tell me why Hound Dog is in my car?" Tsukauchi raised an eyebrow. "She looks like she's shaking. Is shock settling in? Hound Dog is the school's guidance counselor, but I wasn't aware she was interested in talking to him... especially in my car. If his shedding is anything like Sansa's, we're going to need more than just a vacuum later."
"Protection." Harper answered. He raised a brow, so she elaborated. She made sure to keep her voice low so Hound Dog wouldn't hear her. Luckily, Tsukauchi's car was reasonably sound proof, and the man inside seemed relatively entranced with the air freshener hanging from the rear-view mirror. "Endeavor showed up wanting answers. Turns out Endeavor is also a furry. Hound Dog got... he got mind raped."
"He got what?" Tsukauchi whispered, looking just as horrified as Harper felt. "Is this grounds to arrest Endeavor? Is Harper okay, mentally? Wait, no, she's never mentally okay. I'm a shit not-actually-parent. Guardian. This is besides the point."
"He had perverted thoughts about Hound Dog with Hound Dog standing right there." Harper hissed, eyes darting to the window. She forced a smile when the man cocked his head at her, and he gave a doggish one back before going back to gazing at the air freshener and sniffing it. "He has no idea what happened. I panicked and invited him for ice cream."
"...So we're getting milkshakes with Hound Dog?" Tsukauchi checked. "Hound Dog was violated and doesn't even know it."
"We're getting milkshakes with Hound Dog." Harper sighed in confirmation, dragging a hand down her face. Tsukauchi stared at her for a moment before really seeming to think about it. Harper watched blandly as his expression twisted with something akin to disgust. Harper could relate. Honestly, she'd rather take a nap above all else, but it was the best thing she could come up with in the moment. Under immediate pressure, she could see that she didn't do too well. She also didn't give a shit. She drew the line at collars. That's when she stopped listening to literally anyone. Just... Just no.
"...Can Toshinori come over for take out later? You know... All Might?" Tsukauchi cringed as he said it. He knew Harper knew, but it was still weird to say. "At least Hound Dog's will be free. Can dogs have ice cream? Does he have the inner-workings of a dog, or of a human. No, it doesn't matter. I wouldn't want people having perverted thoughts about me. Especially if that someone was Endeavor. Harper has showed me her notes on Shoto's thoughts. That man belongs behind bars, not out here at the Sports Festival preying on unsuspecting guidance counselors."
"Why the hell not. I have questions for the guy anyway." Harper sighed heavily. Today was already stressful, why not pack every tension-filled thing she had to get done into the next few hours just to get it over with? It was Friday, so she had the weekend to hate herself and fall into a coma.
Tsukauchi nodded and slid into the car, greeting Hound Dog happily and thanking him for agreeing to come get milkshakes with them. The poor man (or was it canine?) seemed confused but optimistic. Harper just laid herself down in the backseat. Tsukauchi was a police officer, but wasn't about to get onto her for not having on a seat belt after what she'd just been forced to hear. Hound Dog seemed more concerned about her than he was confused about the situation he'd gotten dragged into, asking her questions about how she felt, questioning what he could do, such of that like.
Harper relaxed more and more the further they got from the arena. Her headache was still pounding, but it didn't pierce through her the same way it had been before. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, willing her body to relax. Tsukauchi was charismatic enough to keep conversation with Hound Dog up. They traded really shitty jokes, talked about the weather. Tsukauchi got some tips on raising a teenager. Harper had raised a middle finger to that, causing Tsukauchi to toss his hat back at her in retaliation.
"You can have chocolate?" Tsukauchi watched on with morbid fascination as Hound Dog drank through a straw like anyone else might. "Somehow, I thought he'd use his tongue to like... lap it up. You know, like a dog."
"It only has a one-in-ten chance of poisoning me." Hound Dog explained. Both Harper and Tsukauchi paused. "I won't die. It's like being lactose intolerant, but instead it's with chocolate, ruff."
"...No comment." Tsukauchi said, earning a chuckle from the UA staff member next to him. "If he dies in my car, I swear-"
Harper blocked out his thoughts before he could go off into another ramble about his precious car and how it needed to be protected at all costs, closing her eyes and quietly sucking up her Oreo blizzard. Apparently those fell within Dairy Queen's 'milkshake' category, so all was well. Her headache had decreased majorly since they left the stadium, no longer as unbearable as it had been less than an hour ago. The cool confection in her hands definitely helped.
Today had been... something else. Harper was honestly surprised she made it as far as she did in the festival, but a little glad. Now she no longer had to worry about trying to figure out which of her classmates was a traitor, which meant she could close off her thoughts just a little more. Doing so would alleviate a lot of the stress that came to rest on her throughout the day, and maybe make her a little more compelled to try her hardest and do well within UA. Nezu had made it clear he didn't just want her here due to her ability to find who'd infiltrated.
"Hey, Harper." Tsukauchi said, drawing her attention. The rest of what he told her was said in thought rather than aloud. "Tomorrow is when we go into the station, since Sero's going to be out the rest of today anyway. I'll have to get your full report, so try to remember as much as you can. Feel free to write it down when we get home if you need to. We'll try questioning the traitor as well, but I'm not sure how willing he'll be, or how long he'll try to keep up his act."
"Alright." Harper sighed, rubbing at her eyes. Hound Dog still seemed somewhat concerned for her, but didn't push. He'd clearly figured out that she wasn't that willing to talk about much of anything at the moment. She thought back to Endeavor and shivered again, gulping down more of her blizzard to distract herself. They'd need to do something about him as well. The flame hero having brain-orgasms over Hound Dog's presence alone was concerning, but the child abuse was even more so. Harper would love to see him get put away for the rest of his life, or for most of it if nothing else.
They drove around some more, snickered when Hound Dog spotted a squirrel and his ears popped straight up and out of his wild mane of hair. Harper drained her ice cream and finished of Tsukauchi's. He made the mistake of leaving it unguarded in the cup holder, so it was honestly free game. He'd pouted and said something about how he wasn't going to let her have any spring rolls, but literally everyone in the car knew that was bullshit. Harper especially, seeing as she was a literal mind reader and all.
Harper got a few texts from her classmates. Ochako had gotten her number, and so everyone else had it too by definition. Most were asking if Sero was okay, but some were also checking on her and wondering where she was. The thing that struck her as heavily odd was Iida. He wasn't as shy in his texting or as hesitant. He knew he could easily be ignored and didn't see why anyone would ever willingly respond to his messages if they didn't want to, and was thus far more open to messaging Harper there. It made conversation optional, allowing her to back out. Only he hadn't texted.
It was definitely concerning. She'd even gotten a text from Bakugo, who gave no fucks about anyone other than himself and Izuku. Sure, all he'd sent was a simple 'tell the tape fucker not to die' but it was better than nothing. Kirishima had sent a jittery two paragraphs asking briefly about Sero, and a lot about her and how she was feeling. He was probably freaking out. She started with the most nervous in class first, first Kirishima himself, then Izuku, before moving on to Sero's closest friends within 1-A. She branched out from there rather tiredly, but at least she was doing it.
Looking at her phone, it actually became apparent that Iida was the only one who hadn't contacted her. Hell, even Shinso had forced her phone number out of Hagakure to check on things. He started off by saying he knew they weren't friends, but that he was grateful for helping him get to the finals and wanted to just see if she and her classmate were okay. Iida not texting made no sense in her mind whatsoever. She wasn't self-deprecating enough to think he didn't care. If Bakugo gave a shit, Iida most definitely did.
"Thanks for the treat, you two. This was a real day in the park." Hound Dog grinned in a way that would have been intimidating if not for his wagging tail, and Harper realized they'd stopped in front of a small one-story home that must belong to the man. "That was fun. I haven't been out with friends in quite some time! Well, not sure I could call the pup a friend per say. Laws and all that, but she's a spunky one, definitely going places as a hero. Tsukauchi's a nice guy too. Maybe they'll-- ruff-- invite me out again sometime."
"No problem, Mr. Hound Dog. Thanks for putting yourself between Endeavor and I." Harper grumbled in a manner that could've been taken as unkind if you didn't know her well enough. Hound Dog only grinned wider as she climbed over the middle console and forced herself into the front seat. She wanted to get out of this gym uniform asap.
"See you later, man. Let's do this again sometime." Tsukauchi gave a salute. "Surprisingly nice. He has absolutely no idea what Endeavor was thinking, and I genuinely hope he never finds out."
"No problem, pup." Hound Dog said before closing the door for her and stepping back. Tsukauchi waved to him as he pulled away from the curb. Hound Dog's thoughts followed her. "A scumbag like Endeavor doesn't need to be harassing children. I wonder how his own pups feel about him. I... almost don't want to bark up that tree."
Harper buckled her seat belt when the car began to beep, dropping her empty cup in the holder. Tsukauchi glanced at her. "You still up for take out with Toshinori? You look ready to collapse." He admitted. "She really does. She made it pretty far into the festival. Far enough to wear anyone out."
"Yeah, like I said, I've got some questions for the guy." Harper sighed heavily, slouching down in her seat as far as she could comfortably go. She'd have a crick in her neck for it later, but the girl really couldn't find it in herself to care. The day was bad enough. If it wanted to get worse, then it could damn well be her guest. It would be pretty tough to beat Endeavor's gay furry thoughts anyway. Seriously, the flame hero had been veering into "marking" territory when she finally managed to grab Hound Dog and run.
"...Are they about his injury?" Tsukauchi asked nervously. She'd been told the base information of why he looked like a cancerous twig, but she didn't know who'd injured him or why they'd done it. Harper had also heard a time limit get mentioned in All Might's thoughts, but it was so brief that she wasn't sure what to make it or if it was even related. "I hope not. She doesn't need to dig too deep into this. She's in enough danger with the League as it is. I wouldn't want to cause her and her family even more grief."
"It's not." Harper sighed. His quirk didn't ping it false, causing the Detective to relax. "It's about something else entirely. Something's up with both him and Izuku, man. It's sort of tripping me out."
Tsukauchi tensed all over again. "She knows he passed his quirk on to Izuku."
Harper's gaze snapped to him. Tsukauchi was sweating. "Well shit, I do now. Passed his quirk down? Is that possible?"
"Is being a human lie detector?" Tsukauchi joked weakly. "Oh god, I gave it away immediately. He's going to kill me!"
"I'm too young for this. Too young, and too tired." Harper sighed heavily, raising her eyes to the roof of the car. The festival would be ending soon, Harper was sure. She once again found her thoughts drifting to Iida. A part of her wanted to text Uraraka or Midoriya to see if they had eyes on him. With the way his thoughts fluctuated, you couldn't be too careful. If Harper could have it her way, there'd be someone with him at all times. He was bad enough that she felt he needed to be on suicide watch. That wasn't a bias on her part: it was a fact. One that scared her just a little.
"You said it, kid." Tsukauchi sighed. "I'm definitely hogging all the spring rolls."
"I will absolutely shank you."
~
Let's make a squad: Tsukauchi, Cementoss, Hound Dog, and Harper. Maybe Toshinori. Not All Might-- he's not invited.
Some of y'all have been unsure about wassup with Toshinori and Izuku so here's a list
-There have, so far, been nine holders of One For all. Toshinori is the eighth, and Izuku being the ninth.
-There are seven voices in Toshinori's head, belonging to the seven previous holders that came before him. Izuku has eight voices, although Toshinori's is just barely there. It's only a murmur and very vague because Toshinori still holds a flame of One For All and isn't, you know, dead
-Toshinori and Izuku can NOT hear the voices! They have no idea the voices are there! Harper can bear the voices just fine. They talk, gave conversations, but Izuku and Toshinori don't hear them at all
-We all know that pieces of the past holders were left behind. The quirk stockpiles energy from each user, progressively getting stronger. Though they can't be beard, the consciousnesses of the previous holders were also passed on, but have never once been heard by anyone alive, excluding Harper who can pick up on them
