twenty one
The man stares at Felix, mouth slightly open. Felix took both of us by surprise; what does he mean, he can take his wings? Is that Christopher? The Christopher?
He smiles, a laugh slipping out.
"You would give up your wings? It's cute that you think that's an option. That wasn't part of the deal." Felix grimaces, his grip tightening slightly on my wrist as Christopher comes closer.
"You remember the terms, right? You had six months to find her, meet her, and get her to fall in love with you again. And your time is up." Felix vigorously shakes his head.
"No, it's not," Felix insists. "I still have two days, and you know it." Christopher clicks his tongue disapprovingly, looking at Felix pityingly.
"You really think two days will make that big of a difference? You think she'll fall in love with you, if only you tried harder enough. Two days won't matter; she won't love you the way she did before. Just accept it, Lee." Christopher stares at Felix. "She won't love you in time."
Felix takes a step back, taking a deep breath. Christopher hit Felix right where it hurts; his hands are shaking and his breathing is ragged. I want to comfort him, but I don't want to draw Christopher's attention to me.
As if he heard my thoughts, Christopher's gaze went from Felix to me, his eyebrows lifting.
"Still protecting her, huh?" Christopher was talking to Felix, but he was staring right at me, a smirk playing on his lips. "As if she can't take care of herself."
Felix tenses, his back straightening. I know he's about to lose it, so I step in and start talking.
"Why are you here?" I ask, hiding my fear behind a wall of false confidence. "What do you want?"
Christopher's taken aback, his aggravating smirk disappearing. Felix relaxes slightly, squeezing my wrist as if to say, good job.
"Why am I here?" Christopher asks, his tone dripping fake sympathy. "What, your lover didn't tell you? Poor thing, he won't tell you the truth even now. Even after telling you the story, which he wasn't supposed to do." Christopher takes a step back, taking his hands out of his pockets.
"If you didn't fall in love in time, you can't go back to eternal rest. Once you leave your resting place, you can't go back. It's the ruling. Once I took you, there was no going back."
I furrow my eyebrows in confusion; Felix didn't tell me this.
"If you don't fulfill the bet we made, then I get to take you." Christopher smirks, looking at Felix proudly. "You come with me, and your lover never gets to see you again. Ever."
"Can you believe that? He really believed that he could get your love back, so much that he was willing to risk your happiness. A real keeper you got there, sweetheart."
Felix lets go of me, finally having had enough.
"Yeah? I'm sorry I love too fiercely." He says, his anger causing him to spit the words out as if they burn him. "But I still have time, so here's all I have to say. Fuck. Off."
Christopher clenches his jaw, unable to hide his annoyance. He snaps his fingers once, and someone appears behind him, supporting someone on their shoulders. The new person shoves him off their shoulder, causing me to suck in a breath.
It's Jisung.
Felix curses under his breath, torn between staying with me and going to his unconscious brother. I push his back lightly, wordlessly telling him to go check on Jisung. He nods and immediately heads to him. I'm happy that he trusts me to that extent, that he trusts that I know how to handle myself.
I make eye contact with Christopher, struggling to keep my calm facade. He grins at me, not the least bit concerned with Felix and Jisung.
"So, sweetheart, still think you want this?" He asks, baiting me with his arrogance. I roll my eyes; as scared as I am, Christopher aggravates the hell out of me. What is his problem?
"I will always want this," I tell him, folding my arms. "I want Felix."
Christopher chuckles, lifting an eyebrow.
"Ah, but do you love him? That's the real question, huh?" He turns away from me to Felix. Felix is trying to wake Jisung up and bring him back to consciousness, but it's not working.
"Fine, Lee. You get your full time. Not that it'll matter, in the end. But if it makes you feel better, fine. And your brother will be fine in no time. Just give him an hour or so." Christopher winks at me, laughing at Felix's obvious anger. "You'll see me again, sweetheart."
Shivers run down my spine; his words eerily mimic what Felix told me when we first met. I blink once and Christopher disappears, as if he'd never been there. I stand for a moment, processing his sudden disappearance when Felix calls my name.
I go to him, kneeling down next to Jisung. I place my hand on his forehead, looking at his closed eyes. I register that he's still breathing, which is good.
"Christopher said he'll be alright," I say, trying to reassure Felix. He rolls his eyes and pushes his hair back with one hand.
"Yeah, sure, like I trust anything he says." He scoffs, picking up Jisung easily and throwing him over his shoulder. I want to laugh at the comical sight; I didn't think Felix had it in him.
Felix holds his hand out to me, struggling to smile.
"C'mon," he says. "We'll go wait over there until he wakes up."
