INTRODUCTION
There was a shape moving just inside of the treeline, partially hidden by the misty morning. Felix squinted, peering between the trees to get a closer look. Hyunjin had wandered out that way a few moments earlier, to look for more firewood. Perhaps it was him approaching.
"Hyunjin?" He called, his voice echoing in the empty forest. The rest of the group was still a ways back, sitting around the campfire, probably singing some old songs whilst Jisung accompanied on his guitar. It was likely that they couldn't even hear him, and the thought made him shiver.
What if it wasn't Hyunjin out there? Maybe something else had crept in. Chances were it wasn't even a person; there had been both bear and wolf sightings deeper into the woods, and Felix momentarily scared himself with the thought of the chaos that would come from an animal attack. He slowly strode towards the treeline.
The cracking of a branch made him jump, tripping over fallen twigs as someone finally strode out of the treeline. Hyunjin stood before him, arm full of the firewood he'd gone to collect. He breathed out a sigh of relief, feeling like he was able to breath again. "Woah.." Hyunjin started, "You look like you've seen a ghost, Lix."
I thought I had... Felix thought to himself, as Hyunjin brushed past him to make his way back to camp. He followed behind, a little reluctantly. It was stupid to be scared of the woods. They'd come for a great time camping, and if he kept being so scared, he was going to ruin it.
It wasn't his fault that the forest looked scary at night, or if the wind made strange howling noises through the trees.
It wasn't his fault if he remembered Hyunjin heading a different way out, either.
Back at the campfire, Jisung was indeed singing old songs whilst strumming his guitar, and Minho was cooking meat on the grill. Hyunjin laid the firewood down, poking at the flames and adding a dry branch every once in a while. Felix didn't know he knew how to make a fire, let alone keep one burning for a long time.
He sat at one of the picnic tables, watching everything unfold. A bad feeling had settled in the pit of his stomach that he couldn't shake. He thought he could feel eyes burning tracks into his back. He watched as Hyunjin stood up from the fire; now glowing with high orange flames. As if he could sense Felix watching him, he turned and smiled.
Something was wrong about that smile. It wasn't Hyunjin's.
He wasn't just being dramatic now. Something was wrong.
