CHAPTER ONE

"Camping? What do you mean, camping?" Felix kicked his feet behind him, laying on his stomach on his best friend Hyunjin's bed. Their college was breaking up for a midterm break very soon, and the two of them had been trying to figure out something to do for the week. Hyunjin laughed, his long legs curled up underneath him as he sat against the headboard.

"I mean we should go camping! It could be fun. We can invite Jisung and Chan and their friends too. I know Seungmin will come if we ask."

Felix sighed. Camping sounded like his worst nightmare, but Hyunjin seemed to really enjoy thei idea, and he didn't want to sour the mood. A vacation to somewhere beachy, with sand and iced coffee was more Felix's style. "Alright, but like, where would we go? Is there a camp ground near here?"

Hyunjin nodded, thrusting his phone in Felix's face. He took it, scrolling through the photos Hyunjin had pulled up. The campsite did look nice; there was a grill and picnic tables to eat at, a fire pit for lighting campfires, and even a toilet and shower block, thank God. There were trails for bushwalking - Chan would be interested in that - and even a small duck pond. He didn't see much reason they shouldn't go, if it was what everyone else wanted.

"Okay, well I guess we should go then, if the others want to." He shrugged, trying to sound as convincing as he could.

Obviously, too convincing, as three days later he lugged a duffel bag full of clothes out of Chan's van and towards the campground. He and Hyunjin had called dibs on sharing a tent, but Hyunjin had gone to set it up alone, knowing Felix wouldn't know the first thing about building tents. He was thankful that Hyunjin looked out for him.

They might have made unlikely friends — Hyunjin was artistic and into music, wearing black clothes and grumbling about everyone who went near him and Felix was nicknamed eternal sunshine; someone who was studious and went out of his way to help people — but from the moment they met they'd been inseparable. They knew everything about each other, from favourite foods to favourite colours even down to their favourite sleeping positions and they'd been devastated when administration had told them they wouldn't be sharing a dorm this semester.

"Felix, you should come help me with this!" That was Chan, fiddling with the knobs on the grill. Felix had always been slightly wary of Chan, and he wasn't sure why. He was older and more mature, definitely, but he also had a certain aura about him. People tended to listen to what he said and follow his instructions. People like that usually made Felix nervous.

"With what?" Felix asked, approaching Chan. He'd already laid out sausages on the grill. They'd arrived at the campground just after lunchtime and everyone was quite hungry. As he fiddled with the knobs of the grill, Felix could hear it whirr to life. He wasn't a very good cook, even if it was only watching the meat so it didn't burn.

"I just thought I'd give you a job to do. Hyunjin's doing your tent, since you're useless at that stuff.." Chan shrugged, poking at the sausages with a spatula. Felix wanted to be hurt at the accusation, but Chan's grin told him he was only joking.

"Yeah, there's a lot I'm not good at..." Felix chuckled, self deprecatingly. He didn't know Chan all that well, being a year above him with a couple of Hyunjin's other friends. He seemed nice enough, if a little scary.

"Don't beat yourself down, I'm sure there's a lot you are good at too." Chan noted. He'd begun chopping onions this time, throwing them on the grill to brown. "Like, didn't you get that cool ass award... what's it called? The congeniality thing?"

The High Achievers Congeniality Award wasn't anything to brag about, as far as Felix was concerned. It wasn't like he'd received an award for being super smart or super artistically inclined, he'd received it because he was super nice. And being super nice was boring, and easy. But he supposed it was nice of Chan to bring it up.

"Yeah, I guess you're right..."

The rest of the day passed in a blur. The others seemed to be having a good time; they'd ate and talked merrily amongst themselves. They'd planned hikes and Chan had found a cool swimming hole to play in, Minho had even suggested they'd go fishing. This whole trip was Felix's worst nightmare, but as he looked around the table at his friends enjoying themselves, he thought it might not be so bad to endure it.

Later that night, Hyunjin joined him in their shared tent. Felix had headed off early, claiming that he was still tired from travelling and the others seemed to believe him. But not Hyunjin. Never Hyunjin. For a moment he didn't say anything, just laid himself down under the blankets they'd brought to share.

"Felix, if you don't want to be here why did you come? You don't want to be here, do you?" His tone was purely curious, not argumentative. Felix sighed, and rolled over to face Hyunjin.

"No I don't. This whole trip is like my worst nightmare," he chuckled. "I can't even believe I let you talk me into this."

Hyunjin laughed along with him, but Felix couldn't help the prickling of tears in his eyes. "Why did you let me?"

"Because you seemed so excited. Because I'd do anything for you..."
