Fixing What's Broken
The blaring noise of sirens flooded the dead silence as the braves heroes fighting during the raid were catching their breath, trying to get things in order. This battle had been another failure. While the capture of Overhaul and the defeat of the Eight Precepts were a success, it had all turned out to be another trap set up by Mightless. Night-eye, the most injured of the bunch, stood silent, and nobody knew why. The desperate look on his face remained plastered on ever since he looked into Mirio's future, and nobody knew why.
Not that it mattered anyway, as due to the heroes failing to retrieve Eri, as they were promised, the media arrived on scene once more, attempting to capitalize on the failure of the heroes for a quick buck. Katsuki smashed his fist against the wall in anger, cursing about how Izuku played them like a fiddle. The police did their best to keep the reporters at bay, as they helped shield the heroes from public shaming. This shield was able to keep the reporters relatively at bay, as the injured Heroes were taken to the nearest hospital.
In the hospital, the doctors ran some medical therapy on the students. Katsuki and Todoroki seemed to be relatively unharmed, with the exception of some minor concussions on katsuki's part. As he left his room, the blond haired student was shocked to see Shigaraki, waiting for him in the halfway.
"Tomura? What the hell are you doing here!?" Katsuki asked in his usual rough tone.
"My rehab center recommended me to visit the elderly to "improve my social skills", but I got bored and wandered off." Replied the reformed villain, leaning against the wall, "What about you, how's school going?"
"Meh, It's definitely different than before."
"In a good or bad way?"
"Can't say."
The next thing you knew, the two started walking down the corridor, chatting like long time friends, an odd thing, especially for Katsuki.
"Anyways, I heard about your attack on those mafia guys. How did it go?" Tomura suddenly asked.
Katsuki's stomach sank with that question. The subject was still a little touchy to him.
"It... didn't go well. We won the fight, but, not only did were we unable to rescue Eri, but we ended up losing a lot of people in the battle as well." Katsuki explained, "2 pro heroes lost their lives, as well as 14 police officers, and as for the survivors? Lock Rock is still in a medically induced coma, recovering from having 18 bullets put into his body, Fatass and Emo-er Sasuke look more like mummies than humans and Kirishima isn't looking too good either."
Hearing this, Shigaraki patted Katsuki in the back.
"But at least you're still fine, kid. That's something right?" Asked Shigaraki.
"I guess, but, I'm just worried about the others, that's all..." Katsuki replied, as he walked ahead, "I guess maybe I should have tried harder."
Shigaraki didn't try to catch up. Instead, he stopped, watching the blond teen walk ahead, rambling on about how guilty he felt for not being there to help everyone, especially Mirio, who lost his quirk permanently according to him. Seeing this, the former villain thought back to just half a year ago, when he watched the sports festival on the TV of a store front, how ferocious and self absorbed the kid once was. Looking at him now, you can barely recognize him as the same person. Knowing this, he let out a warm smile.
"You're improving, Katsuki, you who once only thought of yourself, have finally decided to open yourself up to others. You may not know this yet, young man, but these feeling you're feeling are proof of your development." Thought Shigaraki as he saw Katsuki turn around.
"You coming?" Asked the student.
"Nah, I've got places to be." Replied the reformed villain, as he waved at him goodbye, before turning around and heading the other way.
Meanwhile, a few minutes ago, All Might sat alone in a medical room, facing a bed-ridden Night-eye, still looking into at the ceiling, his eyes in awe. The two stood silent for a while. According to the doctor, the man will live, but will be paralyzed from the waist down. However, the reason behind his trance-like state was due to emotional shock, he was told. Knowing that he looked into Mirio's future when he saved him, chances are what he saw might have had something to do with it.
"The effects of the prescribed sedatives should be kicking in." Toshinori commented.
His former sidekick gave a him a long silent glare in response, before turning back to the ceiling.
"Tell me, Night-Eye, what did you see in Mirio's eyes?" Asked the former hero.
Another silent pause. Knowing he wasn't gonna get anything out of him thing time, Yagi tried to get up, only for him to hear a grunt coming out of the bed ridden Night-Eye.
"Black..." He uttered.
"Excuse me?" Asked All Might.
"Black masses... lots of them... swarming the streets like locust. A city in flames, Yokohama, If I believe so... The cries for help, yet no hero showed up, and just then, Villains... standing in front of me, like I was actually there. He reached his hand out at me, saying "Come with me". And then, there was an explosion, then blood, blood everywhere... a creature beyond description... Heroes and villains alike, dying left and right... A flash of light... a black wall, and then... then..."
He paused.
"Then... I... I... can't recall what happened after that..." Uttered Night-eye.
"I see..." All Might muttered, getting back up, leaving the room, only to have Aizawa waiting for him at the exit.
"So, what did he say?" Asked the former pro hero.
"I'm not sure." All Might replied, "I'm not sure, it wasn't clear, as he was being very cryptic."
"I see..."
The two continued down the corridor.
"They are all over us again." Aizawa started talking, "The media, that is."
"Aren't they always?"
"True, but the second we screw up, they come flooding in like moths to a flame." Specified Aizawa, "And recently, they are getting more and more relentless."
"Media nowadays only focus on the negatives. It attracts more people, hence more money."
"You think this is Mightless's master plan? To have the media pound at our doors until they cave in?"
"Who knows? Izuku has always been an unpredictable student. One instance he's happy and cheerful, the next he's dark and brooding." Explained All Might, "Though judging from the drastic personality shifts, we should have seen this coming in hindsight."
"This isn't about the past anymore, it's about now, especially since Mightless could strike anytime. And with Eri at their side, who knows what he can do?"
"And Shigaraki, he's our only lead to stopping him, and yet I still can't find a way to get through him. There must be some way we can..."
Just then, the two heard Shigaraki's voice around the corner. eavesdropping in, the two hero witnessed the former villain conversing with Katsuki. To their surprise, the former villain seemed to socialize perfectly with Katsuki, much to their dismay. Seeing this, a lightbulb lit in All Might's mind.
"Bingo..."
Kirishima sat on his bed, starring blankly at the ceiling. He could barely move and feel his body. On the plus side, He has recovered enough for Recovery girl to heal him tomorrow, but in the meantime, all he could do was sit, watch TV, and wait. Instead of doing all of those things however, he thought back about Mina.
"Wonder what's she gonna think if she saw me like this..." Kirishima said to himself.
He could still remember that day, when he froze in fear, unable to do a thing while that mysterious villain harassed those girls, leaving Mina to do all the work. She told him not to beat himself up over that one time occurrence, but he still couldn't help but look back at that point from time to time. He wanted to become stronger ever since. However, he had a hunch ever since the practical exams concluded. While everyone else seemed to have improved, he felt like he was stagnating. From what he heard, Tsuyu and Ochaco took out a villain who had absorbed the life force of Ryuku, the number 9 hero single-handed.
While he was happy to hear such a thing, it felt him with a bitter aftertaste, knowing that Tsuyu and Ochaco were catching up to him, if not surpassed him already. He wanted to become a hero, and yet was still unable to defeat a single villain, instead needing Fat Gum to come in and finish the job.
The door next to him opened, as Katsuki walked in.
"Oh, hi Baku-bro!" Kirishima greeted in his usual cheerful voice.
The hot head walked over to the side of his bed, putting a basket down on the table next to him.
"I brought you some fruit." Said Katsuki.
"Oh, uh... thanks." Said Kirishima.
The two sat in an awkward silence after that briefly.
"Hey, uh, Baku-bro."
"What?"
"You seem a lot more social ever since you confessed about your regrets behind Izuku, why is that?" Asked Kirishima.
"Would you have preferred it if I wasn't?" Asked Katsuki.
"What? No! Of course not! But, why tho? Even Izuku's shift in demeanor wasn't this spastic."
"I had help." Said Katsuki, leaning back, "You always need help to improve yourself."
Those last words dug right through Kirishima's hardened defense. Katsuki was right, one does need help when wanting to improve. That's what teachers are for. Ochaco knew this, Tsuyu knew this, and most certainly, Katsuki knew this. He on the other hand, was always on the helping side, being a bro to everyone, and always wanting to do things alone. Everyone else, however, knew that it was still too early, and was seeking help from more experienced veterans while he was acting like an experienced veteran despite still only being a learner.
"I should have known" Kirishima said out loud, "I'm not good enough yet."
"Then get better!" Katsuki answered, "And how about this time, stop you trying to take charge of things. You don't always "have things under control." and saying "I'll protect you no matter what" won't make you suddenly strong enough to power through your opponents."
He then turned to the red haired mummy.
"In shorts, stop making all of my mistakes. Because otherwise, you'll end up dead next time you try to organize a unauthorized search party "redeem your manliness."
Kirishima thought back to the time he forced his classmates and friends into that dangerous operation. Looking back, it WAS really stupid of him, especially since technically, Todoroki nearly died because of him.
"Sorry." He muttered out with guilt.
"However!" Katsuki added, completely ignoring his apology, "I heard what happened during your fight. How despite being outmatched, you still ran in and took the blows for Fat Gum."
He patted Kirishima in the back.
"I doesn't matter what Aizawa's gonna tell you about what you just did, because what you did was, indeed, very manly."
Hearing this, Kirishima blushed.
"Thanks."
"You're welcome." Said Katsuki, "Now eat your fruits, I didn't bring them for nothing."
"Here's the thing though." Said Kirishima, trying to move his arms, "I can't really move."
Katsuki sighed, as he reached into the basket, pulling out and peeling a banana, before reaching out to his bed ridden classmate.
"Open wide." He ordered, inserting his banana into Kirishima's mouth. (Bakushima fans, you're welcome)
It has been two days since Eri was rescue from the Eight Precepts, and since then, she has been residing at the hideout. While she's still getting used to the new environment, she has taking quite a liking to some of the league's members, including Izuku, Toga, Sachi, Irina, Magne, Twice and most importantly, Izuku. As the girl was drinking a cup of milkshake at the counter, Izuku came into the bar.
"Hi Kuro, how's Eri doing?" Asked the leader.
"She's doing fine." Replied Kurogiri, "I mean, she still needs some getting use to in the league, but other than that, she's fine."
"I see." Izuku replied as he sat next to Eri.
"Good Morning Izuku!" Eri muttered nervously, noticing his arrival.
"Good Morning Eri-chan." Izuku replied rubbing her head, "So, how are things going in the..."
Before Izuku could finish, however, she quickly backed off, keeping her distance. Weirded out by her behavior, Izuku turned to the bartender.
"Kuro, what's wrong with her?"
"She's still scared of hurting people with her quirk, young master." Replied Kurogiri, "She has made people disappear in the past. Not only that, but for a girl her age, she's ridiculously smart, and rational too. So imagine how accidentally murdering all of those people in the past while having such a pure mind would affect a child?"
Kuro was right. The first kill is always the hardest one. To see someone's life disappear in front of you, and knowing you were the one who caused it, it can shatter anyone's innocence. Sure, he has done it so much that his morale was in the gutter, but he understands how painful it must be for Eri, especially given her age. He can still recall the nauseating feeling he got when he stabbed L'Oreal, the feeling the of blades entering the hero's flesh, the screams in pain, and worst of all, the inexplicable pleasure. If him doing such a thing could lead to passing out for 2 hours, he can't bear to imagine the impact it's having on her psyche.
Slowly turning to her, Izuku looked down at his hand, as it sizzled with All For One's black energy. Seeing this however, Kurogiri grabbed his wrist before he could move it.
"Don't."
He had a point. In any normal cases, having a quirk surgically forced into you can lead to many health problems, even if you were quirkless. Quirk giving quirks bypass this rule by having the passed quirk automatically adjust to the user's body. But Eri was a who other story. Not only was her quirk surgically forced into her, but it forced a abnormal mutation to occur which gave her a horn. Not even All For One would know what could happen to Eri, should her quirk get taken.
"Then what should we do then?" Asked Mightless.
"Talk to her." Kurogiri replied with a serious tone.
"What? Talk?"
"Do it." He repeated, with a much more aggressive undertone.
Turning back to Eri, now sitting by the couch near the windowsill, peeking out to see the buildings in the distance, Izuku walked up to Eri, sitting beside her again, only for her to back off again. Seeing this, Izuku breathing felt funny. It was an emotion he hasn't felt in a while, and why it's coming back to him now was beyond him. Letting out a breath to calm is inner turmoil, he let his parental instincts take the wheel.
"It's fine." Izuku started, taking out a knife and cutting himself, only for the wound to heal almost immediately, "You can't hurt me, not even I can hurt me, you can trust me."
Seeing this, Eri reached turned around hesitantly, facing him.
"Please, tell us, what's wrong?" Asked Izuku.
Looking down at her hand, she formed a fist, as her arm started to tremble.
"I hurt so many people with my powers. They told me I was dangerous, that I was unwanted. Kurogiri told me I wasn't unwanted, that all of you really do care for me, and I trust you, but..." Eri muttered, looking at him with teary eyes, "Will you still want me if I accidentally hurt any of you? What if I snap again and hurt someone? Please, I don't wanna get thrown out, I'll be good, I swear..."
"Dear god, what have they done to her?!" Thought Izuku.
"But it's okay, I'm happy here. I'm even smiling, see?" Eri continued, trying to force a smile on herself, but ending up incapable of doing so, "Sorry, I think I might have forgotten how to smile."
"..."
"Izuku?"
"I see..."
Izuku got up, and walked towards Kurogiri.
"Kuro, call Twice, I have an idea."
"W-where... Where am I?"
"Who am I?"
"I'm not real..."
"You are real!"
"You don't know that!"
"I am you!"
"Then how do you know you aren't real!?"
"Because I am you! And you are real!"
"I'm not you! There's only one me!"
"And I am part of that "One""
"You are not! You're fake!"
"Then you're also fake!"
"LEAVE ME ALONE!"
"YOU ARE ALONE!"
"I'M NOT ALONE!"
"I AM YOU!"
"JUST DIE!"
"THEN YOU'LL BE KILLING YOURSELF!"
"I'M REAL! YOU''RE NOT!"
"HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT!?"
"I...I... ... ...I don't..."
"SO YOU COULD BE FAKE RIGHT!?"
"I'm not fake..."
"YOU KILLED THE REAL YOU! YOU ARE THE FAKE! I AM THE REAL ONE!"
"Leave me alone..."
"YOU'RE A FAKE!"
"LEAVE ME ALONE!"
"FAKE!"
"Shut up..."
"FAKE!"
"Shut up!"
"FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! FAKE!"
"SHUT UP!"
Twice jumped out of his bed, his body, covered in sweat. looking at himself, he clutched his sheets, pressing his fingers against his forehead.
"I'm real..."
"No you're not."
"Shut up."
"Twice? The boss needs you at the bar." Kurogiri cut in, knocking on his door.
The gray Deadpool rubbed his aching head, groggily getting dressed in his skin tight morph suit and heading downstairs. It was rather deserted at the bar. Dabi was out picking fights with other gangs, Sachi, Irina and Yeong are on break, probably hanging out at an arcade, breaking people's ears with their horrible karaoke (It was so bad that Spinner smashed the Karaoke machine they had, so the three can "take their voice of destruction elsewhere."), the Hounds were god knows where, probably doing military training, Spinner and Magne also took a break, probably doing their own thing and Mr Compress and Toga are out buying groceries. This leaves the only ones populating the place at this moment Kurogiri, Izuku and Eri.
"Yeah boss, you wanted to see me? You don't want to."
"Condition's worsening, isn't it, twice?" Asked Izuku.
"Ugh, tell me about it." Twice grunted.
Sitting down next to Izuku and Eri, Izuku presented her to him.
"Twice, why don't you introduce yourself to her?" Asked Izuku.
"Sure thing! Hello Eri, my name is..."
"Without your mask. I want Eri to know your true face."
As much as Twice wanted to protest, his thoughts did nothing but contradict him. Suddenly, he found himself without his mask, and his other side started to kick in.
"I'm... actually not feeling it, so Sure! it will be fun! Shut up!"
"A-Are you okay?" Asked Eri.
"Uh... yeah... I'm just Feeling horrible! it hurts! No! No! NO! It doesn't hurt! It doesn't"
"Twice has these outbursts every now and then. Why would Young Master pick him at such a time?" Thought Kurogiri.
"Twice has split personality, and a pretty severe one at that." Izuku explained, "He suffers regularly from this syndrome."
"That's horrible." Uttered Eri.
"But, you know what you can do?" Asked Izuku, slowly grabbing her wrist as Twice clutched his head, swearing all the curses he knew.
Suddenly, he yanked her into Twice, and the suddenness of his actions cause Eri's quirk to trigger. All of a sudden, Twice fell to the ground, clutching his head from the fall.
"Owwww, that..."
He froze.
"Hurt? Like, actually hurt?"
He tapped his head, no voices came out.
"Hello? anyone?"
Nothing. Twice grabbed a nearby knife, stabbing him through the hand. Red blood came out, and it hurt, really badly, only this time, there was no thoughts telling him otherwise.
"I'm... real?" Twice uttered, tears rushing to his eyes, "I'm real! I'm real again!"
As Eri got up, Twice hugged her as hard as he could in gratitude.
"Thank you Eri-chan! Thank you! Thank you thank you!" He smiled gleefully.
Eri looked at him in confusion.
"I... helped you?" Asked Eri.
"Yeah! Thank you for using your quirk on me! I'm so happy!" Twice smiled.
Looking at herself, she felt so weird. It was the first time her quirk has ever helped someone. It wasn't like before, it was different, it felt to heartwarming, so refreshing, it felt so... good?
Eri's doubts were replaced by confusion. Her quirk, the same one that was said to only cause harm, actually helped someone? he man looked so happy too. Was it really her doing?
"You see Eri?" Asked Izuku, patting her in the head, "You are wanted. You have an unique ability, one that can save many lives, and make many people happy. If you can control this power, this man won't be the last person you make smile. They say you're dangerous? Ignore them! I'll make sure that they will beg for you to help them once you show them what you can really do with your powers!"
Hearing this, Eri smiled.
"You... You mean it?" Asked Eri, tearing up with joy.
"Of course! You don't have to worry about hurting anyone anymore Eri, because I will help you control your quirk!" Izuku smiled at her, picking her up in his arms.
Eri looked at him hesitantly, not sure whether or not she should hug him back.
"You clung on to me tight when we first met." Kurogiri said in the back, "You trusted me, and you trusted yourself. Try doing that."
Taking his advice, she looked back at Izuku.
"Don't activate! Don't activate! Please powers, don't activate!"
Eri hugged him back, letting Izuku's warmth scatter onto her, wrapping her in the comfort of family. looking back at Izuku, the boy smiled back at him.
"See? I'm still here, aren't I?" Asked Izuku.
Feeling relief, The girl tension was put at ease, as she rested her head on Izuku's shoulder. Suddenly, the door busted open, startling both of them, as Eri accidentally activated her quirk on Izuku.
"Hi everyone! We're back from shopping!" Toga cried out as she and Mr Compress suddenly came running into the room We bought Veggies, rice, alcohol, pastries, including a delicious strawberry shortcake for Eri, and MEAT!"
Upon entering, she gazed in shock at the sight before her.
"Young Master, please put some clothes on!" Kurogiri muttered, covering his eyes.
Looking down, Izuku came to the horrifying discovery: Eri rewinded him back to earlier this morning, right before he was gonna take a shower, making him butt naked.
"How long are you gonna stand there!? With Eri in your arms you look like a child rapist!" Mr Compress yelled out, flailing around in panic while Toga passed out from a nosebleed at the sight of Izuku's rock hard abs.
Finally snapping back to reality, a surge of panic and embarrassment flooded Izuku's mind, as he threw Eri into the air in panic, trying to frantically cover his private parts. Seeing this, Kurogiri rushed in to catch Eri. Just then, three other figure entered the room: Sachi, Irina and Yeong.
"Hey guys, we're back early, our trio was so horrible that they kicked us out of the karaoke bar." Sachi called out, only to realize that him and the girls walked in on one of the weirdest moments in the league.
Izuku was naked and hiding behind a kicked over table while Kurogiri just caught Eri like a football, Twice was running around, flailing his mask in joy and chanting Hallelujah, while Mr Compress was fanning a nosebleeding Toga. Seeing this, Sachi smiled, as he took out his camera.
"This is why I love this place." he said, snapping a picture.
