A Talk With Shigaraki
"Kurogiri! Call the league! I found it!" Izuku yelled, as Kurogiri rushed to assemble the rest of the league.
Shortly after, one after another, the members came down to the bar one after another.
"Alright Izuku, it's 3:25 in the God Damn Morning, what in the world did you wake us up for!?" Asked Spinner, still half asleep, "And seriously, how many days has it been since you last left your damn office!? You reek of ink and sweat!"
"Nevermind all that, prepare the equipments! I have found it!" Izuku answered, nearly falling over.
"Found it? Found what?" Asked Dabi, pouring himself a cup of coffee.
"My father's secondary lab!" Izuku replied, showing them the map.
"Was that what you were working on for all this time!?" Asked Dabi.
"Yeah, why?" Asked Izuku.
"Izu-bro, We checked your room a week ago, it looked the exact same. Have you literally been working one week straight without sleep?" Asked Sachi, yawning.
Looking at himself in the mirror, he turned to Kurogiri.
"Kuro, how many hours has it been since I have last slept?" He asked.
"3 Hours, 54 Minutes, 32 seconds, and still counting." Kurogiri responded, "Unless you exclude the times you blacked out on your desk, in which case, yes, it has been a week."
"Wow..." Izuku said to himself, "I need a damn break."
"Alright, but before that, how about you explain to us what's so damn important about this hidden lab of yours?" Asked Spinner.
"Well, according to Sensei, this lab was the one where he and my dad did most of their research, where the first Nomu was created, where Trigger was born, and where all of his research is stored." Izuku explained, "Right now, we have lost our Nomu making warehouse, our main source of infantry, which significantly cuts the strength of our league. On top of that, we've lost the means to create the quirk influencing drugs despite having the necessary equipment to make them. Right now, we just need to get to this lab, and raid it for supplies to rebuild and get stronger."
The villains looked at each other, agreeing with what their leader had in mind.
"On top of that, the world is still mourning over the loss of their symbol of peace. They are vulnerable now that their source of hope is extinguished, but we still lack the means to vanquish them. If we can mount another large scale attack during this opening, it will permanently shatter the pride and reputation of the heroes. This is our chance everybody! This next attack will decide the outcome of this war! so we need to prepare and take them out as quickly as possible?" Izuku continued.
"But, how are you so certain they will remain in despair for such a long time? Even when our league worked at it's fastest, directing an attack of such scale requires at least a month of preparation!" Toga asked.
"It took All Might twice as long to establish himself as the symbol of peace, being a former fanboy of him, I would know. Besides, villain attacks have nearly doubled since that failed raid on the hero's part, as people from the criminal underworld have heard of our exploits and are now reeking havoc in our name. Our followers should be more than enough to keep the pressure high." Answered Izuku, "But we have to hurry! Time is of the essence, so let's go, and win this war!"
"Right!" The villains cheered in unison, until they saw their boss get up, only to pass out.
"You should get some rest before this, Young Master." Kurogiri said.
"I'm not really used to doing this kind of stuff, as apologies are not my forte, so I'm just gonna come in clean, I'm sorry, Tenko Shimura." Said All Might, currently talking to Shigaraki, who was sitting on a metallic chair across the small room.
The two were currently in a rehab center, located one block away from the U.A Dormitories. This rehab center, unlike most others, was special, as it was designed to recreate an ordinary life of a citizen as closely as possible. While most rehab centers detain their patients in cells, these provide their patients with a separate apartment, and even allows them to walk around freely, as long as they are wearing their suppression collar, which lets the institute track where the villain is at all times as well as nullify their quirks if necessary.
Their goal is to make sure their patients know what to expect from the real world before getting tossed back in by simulating it as accurately as possible, in contrast to most rehab centers, who just tells them what it's like, and often times fail to reintegrate their patients to society.
"I don't go by that name anymore, just call me Tomura, Tomura Shigaraki." Replied the villain, in a dull, depressive tone.
Seeing the state he was in, Yagi knew he had to act accordingly to his behavior, any attempt at contradicting him might have negative impacts on him. According to the multiple "Therapy for dummies" book that he read, it is best to cooperate as much as possible in order to win over the trust of your patients, instead to pressuring them.
"Listen, Ten- no, Tomura, I understand you and I are on pretty bad terms right now, and that you would rather be anywhere else but around here, you have to trust me, I am here to help you." Explained All Might.
Hearing this only made the man laugh.
"Ha ha ha! You!? Helping me!? Oh that's rich coming from a hypocrite like you, All Might!" Tomura yelled at him, before slowly calming down, "This is what I hate about you heroes! Your arrogance alone makes me want to vomit my guts out? Do you really think helping a broken man like me is that simple!? Do you really think you can save me, just because you are the number one pro hero?!"
"If wouldn't be the former number one pro hero if I don't try to at least." All Might replied, "So please, give me a chance to save you."
"Save me huh? fine, answer me this: Why am I suffering?" Asked Tomura.
All Might was stumped by that question, unable to come up with an answer.
"No answer huh? That's what I thought! You think you can save me, but you don't even know what you're saving me from! It's like buying the materials to build a house without planning out what kind of house you are building! Or rushing into a building to save a bunch of hostages, without knowing who's the hostages and who are the ones holding them against their will." Tomura replied to All Might's silence, "If you want to help me, then start correctly, you dumbass."
Hearing this, All Might realized his mistake, he hadn't even thought up on how to approach Shigaraki's problems, much less what they were, yet he arrived, still confident he can save him. Knowing that Tomura hates those kind of people, the kind that are confident in their ability so much so that it becomes arrogance, he had already worsened the situation when he started speaking to him.
"You're right, I don't know what's going on, I don't know how to help you, but pushing me away isn't going to make anything better. so how about instead, we forget what happened all the way up until now and start over?" Asked All Might, who received a slow nod in response, "Good, now, tell me, when did this all start?"
Hearing this, Shigaraki removed his hoodie, revealing his wrinkled face.
"Everything started back when I was young. My mother had died at birth, while my father and grandfather were killed by a villain who had a grudge on my grandmother, Nana. Seeing how her popularity would attract danger, she put me into foster care and severed all bonds with me. So from the day I learned how to talk, I've never spoken to my Grandmother. But you want to know what they had done to me in that foster home!?" Asked Tomura.
"I...I don't..."
"Here's a hint: I used to be quirkless." Replied Tomura.
All Might's eyes widened at the reveal.
"W-what?"
"This was back in an era where the quirked became the majority, and quirkless discrimination was at it's peak, so most foster homes wouldn't take me in, in fear that those who were quirkless would be targeted and picked on. This foster home she sent me to however, was much, much worse. We were nothing more than lab rats, day after day, tortured and experimented to the brink of death, all the while the world outside, including you so-called heroes, were oblivious to the matter. I lived my following years in fear, planning my escape, knowing that my grandmother would be worried sick about me, and was doing all she could to save me from this terrible hell." Tomura explained, "But then came a day where the goddess of luck herself gave me her blessing, and allowed me to escape, miraculously, I was able to escape. I was finally free to the world! I was finally able to see my grandmother, who I was certain was worried sick! But then, what did I see? WHAT DID I SEE!?"
All Might gulped, bracing himself for the reveal.
"YOU! My grandmother and you, together! Like mother and son! She looked so happy, as if I had never existed in her life! She didn't even mention me in the multiple conversations I eavesdropped on! Where was my love!? Where was my family!? Why!? Why was all this care and attention brought to you!?" Tomura cried out.
No answers were given. All Might was too shaken by all of that to give him anything.
"So I returned to my messed up home and their torturous experimentations, and what's more? I embraced them! Their experimental drugs and surgeries, until eventually, they had succeeded, and given me a quirk that can decay all of those I touch. I used that power to kill and slaughter everyone in the institute! But not just those soulless so called "caretakers", but also my inmates, the innocents that had also tried to escape, I killed all of them, Men, Women, even children! They were like animals! And I slaughtered them like animals!" Shigaraki continued, his voiced, becoming more and more distressed as he went on, "I couldn't stop anymore! I was a beast! And much like all rampaging beasts, they must be put down. So why? Why did it have to be her that put me down!?"
"No... you don't mean..."
"Yes... It was Nana Shimura, your sensei, who had shown up to the institute once one of them sounded the alarm. And the look in her eyes, they were cold and merciless! She put me down, her own grandson down, without a second thought, with no remorse! Because she didn't care about me anymore, only you, All Might!" Shigaraki explained.
"But... there's no way Sensei would..."
"Being a hero isn't all fun and games, Toshinori-san..."
A suddenly memory flashed before his eyes.
"Sometimes, you'll end up doing some things, some things you're not proud of, some things you wish you can fix, Some things you've done that you didn't realize were horrible until after you had done it. I envy you Toshinori, I really do, even now, you live your life to it's fullest, with no chains holding you back. I wish I can remember how that feels, there's just so much regret weighing me down..."
"So this is what you meant Sensei!? How could you!?" Thought All Might.
"But know you was the one who saved me!? The one who brought me the care I longed for all this time!?" Asked Shigaraki.
"All For One?" Asked All Might.
"Now that's the first thing you got right, congrats." Shigaraki replied with a hint of sarcasm.
Another pause followed, as All Might, despite mustering all of his brainpower to say something, anything substantial, failed to deliver anything that could help him mend the wounds he had inflicted upon the broken down husk of a man sitting in front of him.
"Well, if you have nothing, then I guess this session is over, now if you excuse me, I got places to be." Shigaraki said, getting up and heading towards the door.
"Wait, before you go, answer me this." Asked the former hero, "Why did you help us?"
"Excuse me?"
"When Endeavor's team was trapped in that dome back during the Kamino incident, they would have all died, but according to him, you and Stain showed up, and saved them. If you really did hate heroes, then why didn't you just leave them for dead?"
The young man's hands trembled briefly when his palm made contact with the door.
"I... I don't know. I guess I must have thought that I had no more to lose. Izuku has taken All For One, whom I recognized as practically my father, from me, The league of villains, which I regarded as my real home and family, they all turned their backs on me. I had nothing left, so I thought that since I had nothing left, I might as well make it so that others can have something." He said, trembling.
Upon hearing this, All Might smiled. He had finally hit bullseye.
"Anything else?" Asked Shigaraki.
"No... That is all for today, see you tomorrow, same time." All Might .
"Tsk... Whatever." Shigaraki hissed, leaving the room.
"You still have part of Nana's heroic spirit somewhere inside you somewhere, Tenko. We can still save you." Thought All Might.
As Shigaraki left the building however, he ran into a familiar face on his way back to his provided apartment. Sitting on a nearby bench, he came face to face with Katsuki, staring longingly at his phone. He remembered the kid suddenly, the one at the sports festival, which he watched through the front glass of a nearby TV store. Looking at him however, he felt an odd amount of pity towards him, like was mourning for the loss of a friend.
"Hey, what are you doing?" The man asked the student, trying to peek at his screen, only to make him jump.
"What the, Shigaraki!? What are you doing here!?" Katsuki yelled back, startled, as he entered a fighting stance.
"Woah there! Chill! I'm not your enemy! Look!" Shigaraki said, showing him his choker, "They still have me in custody! Besides, I'm quirkless now anyways! Your friend Izuku took my quirk weeks ago!"
Hearing him say that name however didn't sit well with the boy, but he managed to hide that fact.
"Fine then, what do you want!?" Asked Katsuki, still with a ruthless tone, as per usual.
"Oh, nothing much, actually, and stop acting, I saw you mourning only a minute ago! You can't hide it from me!" Shigaraki replied, "I'm just curious about what you're doing all the way out here?"
"We are currently trying to make some "Ultimate Moves" to forge our own hero identity or something, but, frankly, I couldn't take my mind off the recent events that transpired, so I came out to clear my head." Replied the student.
"Oh really? Do you have any ideas so far?" Asked Shigaraki.
The student cupped his hands together, firing a concentrated blast.
"I called it Armor Piercing Shot, where I focus my explosive force down to one point to penetrate my opponents. Nothing else other than that." Katsuki replied, with a more somber tone.
Hearing that tone however, it reminded Shigaraki of what he was once like back when AFO first took him in as his disciple. Hearing himself for so many years secretly gave him a talent of recognizing whenever someone's trying to hide their pain.
"Well no duh you can't think of anything else!" Shigaraki said, lightly tapping his head, "You keep beating yourself up over nothing! Your mind is so busy trying to make sure whatever pain your hiding doesn't leak that you can't even think straight! So how about you let that part go and try again?"
"I... I can't." Katsuki said, turning towards the direction of the gym they were training at, "Every time I look at this school, from it's main building to it's dorm rooms, or even to it's staff, I can just picture Deku, squeaking fanboy gibberish, running down to halls, notebook out, trying to get an autograph from every pro hero turned teacher he meets."
Shigaraki took a look at Katsuki's phone: He was looking at past photos of him and Izuku, and even some class photos.
"It's just not the same without him. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I miss the poor guy. Why, why did he have to turn?" Asked Katsuki to himself, hitting himself over the head, "Why can't I ever be a decent human being!? Why am I such an asshole to everyone I meet!?"
Seeing this, the former villain grabbed Katsuki's wrist, stopping him from hitting himself over the head.
"It's not your fault kid, he was better off a villain anyway, becoming a hero would be a waste of talent for the guy. Bound to serve the law and justice, being justice another fish in the pond." Said Shigaraki.
"What do you mean by that?"
"When was the last time the world was changed by a king? or a great ruler or government? When a new era begins, it's always due to some revolution, led by rebels who disagree with something about their current conditions, and now is no different. Even if Izuku managed to become a pro hero, he won't be able to save the millions of other quirkless people, discriminated and crying for help around the world, or the millions of Mutant quirk users, who are shunned by society for looking inhuman. Because the voice of a single hero isn't enough to change the world, contrary to popular belief. Only a villain's speech can make change happen." Shigaraki explained, "Izuku must have known that, as well as disagreed with the state the world is in, and wants change. So it isn't your fault Katsuki, it's the world's."
"But I was the one who introduced him to this harsh reality! It was me who lead him to believe that no matter how nice he was, no matter how hard he tried, he will never have a place in this world because he is quirkless!"
"But did anyone stop you when you bullied Izuku? No! Did anyone cared about how horribly you treated him? No! Did any of the teachers care or tried to stop you? Or how about the pro heroes? Who neglected him despite his admiration for them? If the world isn't to blame, then it would have stopped you long ago." Shigaraki replied, "Why else do you think I too had attempted at one point to destroy the structures of today's society?"
Katsuki didn't reply, he just nodded, agreeing with what the villain had to say, when suddenly, he snapped back to reality, realizing who was giving him advice and trying to comfort him.
"Wait, why are you telling me all this?" He asked suddenly, only to see that Shigaraki had already gotten up and was leaving.
"I dunno, I guess maybe I just wanted to help." Said the villain, "I don't even know anymore."
"Oh and one more thing!" The villain said, turning around and smiling back, "Don't go take your classmates for granted, okay?"
As the man left, the student stood there bewildered he suddenly heard voices coming from behind him.
"Hey Bakugo! What are you doing all the way out here? We're heading off to buy a drink, wanna come?" Asked Mina, along with some other classmates.
Turning around fully, a grin drew on the blond's face.
"Sure."
"Morning Sleepyhead! Ya had a nice nap?" Asked Toga, whom Izuku woke up to.
"I thought you had your own room." Izuku replied, still sleepy, as he gently pushed Toga off his chest and got dressed.
"That room gets kind of lonely when you're not around, you know? I've missed the days when I would sneak into your room and snuggle into your arms." Toga replied seductively, only to make Izuku flinch, knowing that Toga had been at his place that many times.
"I...Uh.." Izuku stuttered, before letting out a defeated sigh, "I have no excuses, I guess I'm just way too busy lately."
Suddenly, Toga leapt onto him as he was just about to grab his shirt.
"Then allow me to ease your stress." She whispered lustfully.
"Young Master? We are leaving in ten minutes." Kurogiri cut in, walking into his room only to see what was happening.
He looked at the two in silence.
"Make it 20." He finally said, leaving.
The two then turned facing each other.
"Well that's 20 free minutes, how are we gonna spend it?" Izuku said with a smug smile.
"I dunno." Toga said, leaning in to kiss him, "We'll just have to improvise."
In a forest somewhere in rural Japan, where trees and mountains are all that's visible for miles, hidden between two mountains stood a tall, 12 story metallic structure, decrepit and ravaged by time. A dark purple portal opened a few meters below it's doorstep, as the Group trickled out one by one, standing before the former laboratory.
"Seriously, how did no one, not even hikers, even notice that!?" Asked Sachi in confusion.
"I'm more curious as though how they built it. A structure this size would require a full team of construction workers with vehicles and power tools, and yet it's in such an isolated area." Yeong speculated.
"You shouldn't underestimate All For One's capabilities." Kurogiri answered, "Now, shall we begin this raid?"
"Yes, but brace yourselves. From the notes I saw, my dad was a prodigy and a genius, one that Sensei described as "The Child of Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawkins, with the mind of Da Vinci and the ingenuity of the Wright Brothers". As such, it is highly possible this building's security is beyond anything we've faced so far, so stay on guard." Izuku said, walking up to the door.
He rubbed his hand on the metallic door, feeling's material, and deducing how to open it. He saw a broken down print reader next to the door, but the screen was cracked and vines were growing out of the console. Seeing that there was no other way in, he took off his black glove and placed four of his fingers onto the door.
"Ready Guys?" He asked one last time.
"Ready!" The group yelled back.
The fifth finger was placed.
