Chapter 4- The Journey Begins
I began to walk to the house, people kind of stared at me for a while, but then looked away. I looked at all of the kids running around, not giving any worry about anything in the world.
After a while, I finally passed through the town and made it closer to the house. As I walked closer and closer, the house grew bigger and bigger, like a bear sort of. If that makes any sense.
I began to see what the house looked like.
It was black, like grandmother said when they burned it, though some of it still had the ivory paint like the pictures, the grass was deadened, the vines now even longer, the windows were broken from the heat, some of the wood from the walls were falling down, the roof had a whole in it, and where there was a cirlce in the middle of the second floor, broken painted glass was everywhere. Some if it was still standing, I'm guessing it was like a valley with green grass, flowers, a blue sky, the sun, and a few birds, but it might've been different.
I reached towards the fence, it was a classical wooden fence, some of it broken and burned, but what got my attention, was the yellow police tape at the fence gate. I looked around, was someone else killed in this house?
I shrugged and removed the police tape, opening the gate, only for it to fall off. I picked it up and set it laying down on the fence. It was weird, really, police tape on a probably 100-150 year-old house? There is something that they're hiding, which drew my attention even more.
I looked around on the lawn, not much really, just deadened grass, glass shards scattered around the floor, a few wood pieces, blood on the fence- wait. Blood on the fence?
I went over to it, it was fading away, some of it already gone, but left the darkened spot from the moisture into the wood. I sat on my leg and dragged my finger down on the stain, it was old.
"It must've been when the family was killed." I said, standing back up.
I walked to the front door and looked at it, it was burned, pierced through by pitchforks, broken, and when i tried to open it, the door just slowly opened the rest of the way. I looked at the lock and it was busted, whoever was the first to burst in this house sure had a good kick or shove.
I looked around a coughed, it was dusty, floors were broken, wood was placed everywhere, as well as the glass shards, the stairs across towards the end were a little broken, a few spots of blood was seen on some of the floors and walls.
I grabbed my camera out and played "Record". The video began and I looked back and fourth, the camera moving where ever I looked. I began walking to a nearby door and grabbed the handle, it was unlocked. I took a deep breath and opened it, I made the camera move left to right, tasting everything in the room. I closed the door behind me and looked at the back of the door, nothing. I looked around for a bit and found a little diary, the handwritting was a little messy, but enough to understand it.
Dear Diary, April 6th, 1912
Today, Howard and I performed in front of the town again! It was really cool!
And I think his little crush came to see him too.
I think she is adorable, really, she almost looks like a porcelain doll. Even in the winter she looks beautiful. I must say that I am a little jealous, I might find someone sooner or later.
I flipped the page.
Dear Diary, April 7th, 1912
Today, Howard walked with her, I saw them. I have to say, they are very cute together!!! He wouldn't stop talking about her for days! Even weeks! It's crazy. I think he found the one, but I'm not sure.
Hello! I'm back! Ok, so Howard just came back home and he told me that they were dating!! Isn't that amazing? It was adorable because he didn't even know what dating was.
But he did tell me her name,
The page I was looking at was burned, along with the next page being completely black. I'm surprised myself that these two pages didn't burn. I picked up the book and carefully placed it in my pocket, it was small, so it fit perfectly. I looked around the room once more and saw a burnt stuffed animal on a damaged bed.
I picked it up, the fur was no longer soft, it was rock hard, it was an ash gray, one of the eyes were a button, and looking at whatever was left at the ears, it was a rabbit.
I set it back down on the bed and left the room. My camera still following my every move. I closed the door and went to the second closest one. Depending on the remains, this was a sort of small hallway or something. I went to the door and grabbed the handle, it was locked.
"How can a door be locked?" I shrugged and went back to the main entrance. I looked straight ahead and saw a door wide open. I cocked my head to the side and walked towards it. I looked inside and someone was sitting on the bed, facing away from me.
"Hello?" I said, keeping distance.
No answer. Some dust felt like it was beginning to burn my eyes and I rubbed them, opening them only to see no one there.
"I guess I'm seeing things?" I went inside and looked around. I looked at the spot where I saw the figure sat, it was cold, just like the rest of the bed.
Was he looking at something though? I sat down on the bed and looked straight ahead, Nothing. I looked up, nothing. I looked down, I saw a pile of wood, and a little green thing barely peeking out. I sat up and sat on my knee, removing the wood from the pile.
The green thing was a book, not even burnt. I picked it up and looked at the cover, it said "Howard".
I opened it up and saw amazing writing and pages filled with words.
I sat down on the bed once again and began to read through a chapter. The vocabulary was like a college student, it was very descriptive like I was in the story myself, and everything was clear and the plot was moving in a straight line.
I closed it and held onto it. This seemed important in some way.
I left the room, looking back and heading towards the door, my camera began to act strange. I hit it a few times and it went back to its regular way. I saw a small boy at the door, the front door, he didn't say anything, but just stood there. I blinked a few times and walked up to him.
"H-Hey, what are you doing?" My camera turned off, and the boy looked at me. I jumped back and fell backwards, the book falling out if my hands.
"Where is my body?" He said.
"Have you seen my body? I cannot rest until I have found what i have longed for." I shook my head.
"The one who has found my book must have found my body, correct?" I slowly shook my head. He sighed, and walked up to me.
"Stand up please, male that has found my book." I quickly stood up, he walked around me, placing his hand on my jacket and actually moving it.
"What year is it sir? I have been in this house for a very long time, I do not remember how long I have waited." I quickly answered.
"It's 2012, May 5th."
"2012, it's been a long time." I nodded slowly.
"Mother, father, and sister are probably sad that I'm gone. Can you help me look for them?"
'But no one lived heres for years.." I quickly nodded my head.
"Y-Yea, I'll help." He walked to the stairs, I followed him.
I checked my camera, it still didn't work.
"My mother's and father's room is this one." He went to grab the handle, but it didn't move. I quickly walked up and placed my hand on the knob, the boy quickly moving his. I twisted the handle and opened the door, the boy went inside and began to call out.
"Mother? Father? Are you here? I returned from the king's castle, he said that he was going to send help!"
I entered the room, a blue rug placed ontop of the floor. A queen-sized bed was neatly made, some of what looked like blood left on the covers, whatever was hanging above the bed was burned and the metal pipes were melted down. A big closet was placed in the edge of the room, the door was wide opened and some of the clothing was still seen hidden in the shadows. Next to it was a small nightstand with a mirror, the mirror of course, was broken and cracked, then there was this small bookshelf that had-
"They're not here." I looked at him, he was looking me, a plain expression on his face, yet, it showed pain.
"Um, alright then, are there any other rooms you want to look around in?"
"I'm not allowed in my sisters' room, so my mother and father are probably out at the market."
'Market?' I thought.
"Well, then we will have to wait I guess." I began to walk to the stairs, hoping to get out of here.
"You have unique clothing Mr." I stopped dead in my tracks and turned around to see him, his head was tilted and his face looked puzzled.
"Thanks?" He walked down the stairs until he was besides me. A cold chill ran through my spine, almost like he was bad or something. I haven't felt this chill when he walked up to me, when I was besides him, or anything. The chill wants to come now? Out of all times.
"What's your name?"
"J-Joseph Martin."
"It's nice to meet you Joseph, my name is Howard, Howard Rose."
My eyes widened.
It can't be.
