"Is he here?" Was the first thing Saige blurted out to Raella as soon as she reached their table in the nightclub. Her eyes scanned the scene but there was no sign of Drew anywhere.
"Nope." She shook her head.
Saige resisted the urge to groan out of frustration but failed miserably. Sheer disappointment was plastered in her countenance as she sat down, huffing. Raella could only laugh at her dismay before offering her a shot of tequila and a chaser.
"Come on, drink up, baby!" She hollers. "I'm sure he's just running late. He did say he was coming, right?"
Saige nods at her question. "Honestly, I don't even care! Tonight will be a stress-free night!" She yells over the loud music blaring before gulping the shot in one-go. She lets out a loud "woo!" as her throat burns. "Let's go fucking dance!"
The two girls then excitedly made their way to where the other girls were in the dance floor. Cheers erupted from the three girls upon seeing Raella and Saige join them.
"Saige!" Madelyn squealed upon seeing her. "Dude, you look so fucking good!" She gushed, bringing Saige to a twirl.
"Says you!" Saige retorts, pulling her into a tight hug. "You drinking?"
Madelyn nods. "Yep! On my third shot of tequila as of right now and I'm so hyped! Let's dance the night away!"
The music was deafening but Saige didn't care. She was here to let loose and have fun, evidently so from the way her hips swayed along with the beat of the music; her arms up in the air. Drew's absence lingered in the back of her mind but as the night went on, everythings starts to haze that she just completely forgot about him.
After what felt like the hundredth shot, Saige began to feel dizzy and droopy, and decided to lay off of drinking for a bit. She told the girls she was heading back to their table to take a break, and Madelyn decided to tag along.
Nearly half an hour had passed, and Drew was still nowhere to be seen. Saige's lips curled into a pout; the thought of him making her chest feel light and heavy all at once. She wove her way through the crowd, Madelyn closely behind.
After their short and quite awkward interaction on Instagram, she didn't have the balls to message him again. What excuse would she even have? She had no claim to him, no reason to pry into his life, and definitely no right to ask why he hadn't shown up.
But then as she stepped out of the horde of swaying, sweaty bodies, her heart nearly leaped to her throat.
There he was.
Drew fucking Starkey.
He was sitting at their table, casually leaning back, one arm draped over the chair beside him. Her stomach flipped. He came.
"Drew!" Madelyn screamed, excitement laced in her voice as she rushed forward, dragging Saige behind her. "Fina-fucking-lly, dude! Thought you'd bail!" She leaned over to give him a quick hug after flipping each other off. "Saige, come meet Drew!"
Saige froze, her breath catching in her throat. He was standing now, rising to meet her. He towered over the table, and every thought she'd had about him from the last three years came rushing back. He was right there, he was real.
"Hey," she managed to croak out, still high on alcohol.
Drew's eyes locked on hers for a moment before he extended a hand across the table. Her hand immediately darts forward to meet his and they shook hands. His grip was firm, his hands warm and rough enough to make her stomach flip.
She was shaking his hand. She was holding his hand. Her skin tingled at his touch, and it felt as if her senses were on high alert. It was like every nerve in her body was screaming at her. She could barely breathe. And when their eyes met again, just for a second, it felt like the entire room swirled.
"Nice to finally meet you, Saige." Drew's voice was low and smooth, a small smile tugged at his lips. "Was bound to happen after all these years, huh?"
"Clearly." The word escapes out of her mouth before she could stop it, her eyes widening slightly. "I mean, yeah." She quickly added, her voice shaky. She made a mental note to punch herself later.
The air between them felt somewhat weird, and they were completely unaware of the others at the table—Madelyn, Austin, Rudy, and JD—exchanging smirks and knowing glances at the obvious something between them.
Drew tilted his head slightly, a low chuckle rumbling from his chest, making her stomach churn. Her let his hand linger for just a moment longer before pulling away, leaving her palm tingling with the warmth of his touch. "Shot?" He asked, casually gesturing to the drink on the table.
"Oh, no. I'm good. I'm done for." She tried to steady her voice, smiling lightheartedly. Then, an idea struck her mind. It was risky but she had to try. "I'm gonna head to the bar to get more drinks. Wanna come?"
What the fuck? She didn't know if it was her or the alcohol but the question seemed to hang in the air, both of them caught off guard. Saige's heart was racing as she waited for his response. Say yes. Drew raised an eyebrow, his expression unreadable as the corner of his mouth twitched.
"You know what," Austin suddenly interjected, his tone anything but subtle. "Yes. Yes, he will.. we actually need more bottles, so why don't you be a dear and grab some for us, Starkey boy? After all, you were so late." His smirk widened as he nudged Drew out of his chair, clearly enjoying himself.
Drew shot him a pointed look, the kind that said 'I know what you're doing', but Austin only shrugged. Rudy and JD stifled their laughs at Drew's face.
"Uh..." Drew finally cleared his throat, glancing back at Saige before nodding. "Yeah, yeah. I'll come with." His voice was quieter now, his gaze lingering on her for a moment.
Saige's lips curved into a cute grin, trying to play it cool even though her stomach was practically doing cartwheels. Then, she caught Madelyn's gaze. Saige almost forgot she was Daniela's cousin. But the moment Madelyn winked at her and a sly grin spreads across her face, Saige knew she had given her the green light. It brought her to wonder... did Daniela really hurt Drew that much that even her cousin wants Drew to be with someone new now?
Drew then started walking towards the bar, making his way through the crowd with ease. Halfway through, he glanced over his shoulder, his gaze softening when he realized she wasn't right behind him.
Saige froze, her pulse quickening under his gaze. "Oh!" She muttered, feeling flustered, before quickly making her way toward him.
As they made their way to the bar together, something between them shifted. Saige couldn't quite put her finger on it—was it just her and her delusional self or was Drew constantly glancing at her out of the corner of his eye?
There was one thing she was certain of though. Operation Make Drew Fall in Love with Her had just begun. And by the looks of the way he slowed his pace, as if to keep her close by, maybe—just maybe—it wasn't entirely impossible.
GWYN'S NOTE.
