For Saige, risking was better
than regretting. She'd always ask herself: Why spend the rest of your life asking what if questions?
Like, why should one spend even a moment of time sulking on what could have been? Her motto take the risk or lose the chance was a significant factor in most of the decisions she made in the last three years of her adult life.
It didn't help that her equally exuberant cousin Raella was always an avid supporter of her escapades. They'd been sharing an apartment unit in the heart of NYC along with Madison, splitting the rent and alternating the daily rituals of cooking and washing dishes for almost three years. In those three years, the OBX cast had visited their place a couple of times but Drew had always been conspicuously absent.
So, here's a fact: Saige had already met half of the cast except for Drew.
Another fact: Their flight was landing in less than an hour, and Saige was absolutely buzzing with a mix of angst and eagerness.
Also, another fact: Saige was irrefutably willing to risk it all for Drew who—for the most part—couldn't care less of her existence.
That last fact was maybe a little out of context but it was all true.
Brushing her thoughts away, Saige plopped herself down on the couch and reached for the remote control. At times where nervousness was more in control than her elation, there was only one thing she wanted to watch: He's Just Not That Into You. Her comfort movie. For her, it pretty much sums up her situation with Drew. She was the girl that he was not into; the unrequited one. To some extent, it was fine. It was just a crush, right? Pretty harmless. There were other times she'd wonder what it was like for that feeling to be reciprocated. But that was just a thought.
"Something's bothering you." Raella's voice snapped her back into reality. "You're watching this shit again." Raella points to the movie, shaking her head in a teasing manner before taking a seat next to her.
"Hey, you know it brings me comfort!" Saige smacked her with the back of her hand.
After a moment of silence, Raella then spoke, "It kinda hits different now that he's single, right?"
"Drew?" Saige frowned. "Yes but it's... not really in my plans to be the rebound girl." She made a face. Lies.
"You sure 'bout that?" Raella raised a brow. "I know you, Saige. You're the kind of person who's willing to go above and beyond for someone even if you know you'll get hurt."
"Ugh, you caught me there." She lets out a defeated sigh, feeling a slight tug in her chest. "But I won't get hurt, I promise. I know I could never replace her."
"Don't even start comparing yourself to Daniela, you're both different." Raella chided. "She hurt him and you won't."
Saige turned to look at her with a smile. "He doesn't deserve what he's going through right now." She pouts.
"I know, Drew's a good guy." Rella chuckled. "I still don't understand why Dani broke up with him. No offense, but they were really good together, you know? Like they just clicked."
"None taken." Saige rolled her eyes. "But I don't get it, too. They were... okay the last time I remember. But he definitely deserves all the love and happiness in the world." She sighed. "I could just give it to him, you know? Like... I just wanna make this boy the happiest he's ever been."
Raella nodded in agreement. "I get you. Just please, don't hurt yourself, okay? There are risks, you know?"
She beamed in satisfaction at that. "I won't, promise. Plus, you know how I feel about risks." Her voice softened, a string of vulnerability laced in the words she spoke. "I know this may sound selfish or... ambitious but is it bad that I want to be the one who shows him that love doesn't have to hurt? That it can be simple and... real? "
Raella flashed her a knowing look, one that spoke of understanding and quiet support. "It's not bad." She said. "But you deserve to be 100% happy, Saige. Not the kind of happy that's temporary."
"I will be happy and it's not gonna be temporary." Saige replied, a hint of determination in her tone. "I just... have to show him that it's okay to trust someone again; to be with someone new. Even if it takes time."
