It was only until Saige sat down on the lounge chair, Drew just a breath away, their shoulders almost touching, that she realized how much she missed these moments with him.
She missed the silence they once shared under the sky and the soft howls of the wind that seemed to cradle them in moments like this. She missed the way he'd steal glances when he thought she wasn't looking, the way their hands would almost—but never quite—meet. She missed him.
Drew Starkey had been the best and worst thing to ever happen to her, and sitting beside him now, it all came rushing back.
But even with the city lights sprawling out in front of them, the quiet between them was fragile, like glass. It felt fine for a while—comforting, even. Then it wasn't. The weight of everything unsaid sat heavy in the air, and Saige found herself wiping her damp hands on her thighs, steeling herself to speak.
"Drew," she said softly.
He turned to her so quickly it was like he'd been waiting for her to say his name. "Yeah?"
"What do you want to talk about?" She asked, trying to keep her voice even.
Drew didn't answer immediately. Instead, he stood up and walked toward the railing. Saige blinked, suddenly on high alert.
"Uhhh, you're not gonna jump, are you?" She called, half-joking as she scrambled to her feet and joined him. She caught the faintest curve of his lips before he leaned his arms on the railing, staring out at the view.
"No," Drew said with a quiet chuckle. Then, after a moment, he said, "I want to talk about us."
Her stomach flipped at his words. "What about us?"
He looked at her then, his expression raw and unguarded. "I hate being apart from you."
Her breath caught.
"And I hate..." His voice faltered. "I hate that you hate me."
"I don't hate you, Drew." She said immediately.
"Just—let me talk, okay?" His tone was pleading, his eyes filled with something she couldn't quite place.
She sighed and leaned against the railing. "Fine."
"I hate that we don't talk anymore," Drew said, his voice low but steady. "I hate not waking up to a text from you. I hate not hearing your corny pick-up lines, not seeing your face, not... feeling you next to me." His voice cracked, but he didn't stop. "I hate knowing I hurt you."
Saige's chest tightened. Tears pricked at her eyes, but she blinked them away, crossing her arms as a barrier between them.
"I was an asshole to you," Drew began, his voice thick with regret. "But you stayed. Through everything, you stayed. And I wish I could go back—fix it all—just to show you that you were always enough. Because you were, Saige. You always were."
His gaze searched hers as he continued, his words soft but earnest. "You make me happy in ways I didn't think were possible. You make me feel like I can finally breathe—like I can just be myself. You make me laugh, even with your corny jokes and shameless flirting. And you make me feel again, Saige. After so long of feeling numb, you make me feel like... me."
Saige couldn't speak. Her throat tightened, every word she wanted to say stuck somewhere between her heart and her lips. She was utterly, completely devoid of responses
"I miss you, Saige," he whispered, turning to face her fully. "God, I fucking miss you so much, it feels like I can't breathe."
Her tears betrayed her then, slipping silently down her cheeks. Each word he spoke tightened the grip on her chest, her heart clenching painfully as if trying to shield itself. It felt like her throat had constricted, robbing her of the ability to breathe, let alone speak.
Drew's hand moved instinctively, his thumb brushing away a stray tear with a gentleness that nearly unraveled her completely. His touch was warm, familiar, and devastating all at once, and Saige found herself leaning into it before she could stop herself.
"I want you, and I choose you," he said, his voice barely above a whisper, yet it carried the weight of a promise. "But if you've changed your mind about me, that's okay. I'll spend a lifetime trying to change it back. I'll prove it to you, Saige—every day, for as long as it takes."
She sniffled, a storm of emotions swirling in her chest, threatening to overwhelm her. And then, because she couldn't help herself, she arched a brow and managed to say, through a watery laugh, "You're so dramatic." She swatted his arm lightly, her laughter mingling with tears. "What's next? Should I expect you to kneel or something?"
Drew froze for a beat before the corner of his mouth twitched into a smirk. "Would it help?" He asked, his voice tinged with playful mischief.
Her eyes widened in disbelief. "No—" she started, her voice raising slightly in protest.
But before she could stop him, Drew smirked and sank to one knee, right there on the rooftop.
Saige gawked, her mouth falling open. "Oh my God. Drew, get up! That's so weird!"
"Nope," he said simply, meeting her wide-eyed stare with an infuriating mix of sincerity and humor. "You're right—this is weird. But I'm not doing it for show. I'm doing it because I need you to know how important you are to me. That I'm not going to walk away until you hear me out. Until you come back to me."
"But you look like you're about to propose or something! What if someone sees us?"
"This isn't a proposal," Drew said, the smirk lingering just a moment before his expression softened, sincerity taking over. "Not yet, anyway." His voice lowered, steady and raw. "This is me making sure you know I'm serious. That I'll do whatever it takes to fix this. To fix us."
She stared at him, her emotions warring inside her. Part of her wanted to laugh at how ridiculous he looked kneeling there, but another part wanted to cry because... damn it, she missed him.
"You're relentless." She mumbled, her voice trembling as her tears threatened to spill again.
"Does that mean you'll give me a chance?" He asked softly, his eyes holding hers with quiet hope.
"Just get up before someone mistakes this for an engagement and films us!"
"I'll get up when I'm sure you're ready to give me a chance," Drew said, his voice steady but warm. "No pressure, baby."
She groaned, her resolve crumbling under the weight of the endearment. Without thinking, she dropped to her knees in front of him, raising an eyebrow.
Drew blinked, clearly caught off guard. "Uh... what are you doing?"
"Kneeling," she deadpanned. "Apparently, that's what we're both doing now. So, go ahead. Get it over with before my knees actually give out or I start regretting this whole thing."
He smiled faintly but didn't tease her. Instead, his tone softened, vulnerable. "I'm sorry, baby. I let you down and I hate myself for it. I pushed you away because I was too caught up in my past to see what I had right in front of me. You meant—you mean—a lot to me. And I just want a chance to prove that."
For a while, she kept quiet. Taking in his words. Absorbing it. Then, her lip trembled as she whispered, "Do you even understand how much you hurt me with your mixed signals, Drew?"
"I do," he said quietly, his frown deepening as he lowered his head. "But I wasn't seeing things clearly. I'm not asking for forgiveness... just a chance to make things right. To show you that you mean a lot to me."
"I didn't even know who I was to you," she murmured, her voice breaking as she struggled to hold back the sobs, reminiscing all the times she'd question what was her role in his life. "I didn't know what we were."
His gaze didn't waver, unwavering in its intensity. "You were everything. You are. And without you..." He paused, his eyes softening, his voice barely above a whisper. "I don't know who I'd be."
"You'd be Drew fucking Starkey," she muttered, her tears slipping freely now, her voice thick with emotion.
A faint smile curved his lips, but it was filled with sadness. "Yeah, well, Drew fucking Starkey's nothing without Saige."
Her walls shattered in that moment, the weight of his words sinking deep into her chest. Her breath hitched, her heart painfully exposed, as the truth of it all settled over her.
"Are you still mad at me?" He asked cautiously, his voice barely above a whisper, as if afraid of the answer.
"No," she admitted softly, her eyes searching his, but still unsure of what to say next.
"Are you sure?"
"I was never mad at you," she whispered, her voice breaking just slightly.
"Then what were you?" He asked gently, his heart in his eyes.
"Hurt." She said, the word heavy with everything she'd been carrying, all the things left unsaid, all the pieces of her heart that had shattered.
For a moment, they just knelt there. Saige finally sighed. "Fine. I'll unblock you and forgive you. But if you ever pull this kneeling crap again, I swear..."
His lips twitched into a faint smile. "Fair deal."
"Good. Now get up before my knees give out," she said, groaning as she stood.
He laughed softly and pulled her up, and for the first time in forever, Saige couldn't help but smile.
