Saige woke up the next morning to the buttery aroma of toasted bread wafting through the air. It was enough to drag her groggy self out of bed and down the stairs to the kitchen. The absence of a dreaded hangover headache threw Saige into fits of praises and thanks to the gallons of water she'd guzzle last night.

"Morning," she greeted Madison and Raella with a yawn before leaning against the counter. "Smells good." She compliments the two girls who busied themselves in the kitchen. Without permission, she grabbed a toasted bread before taking a generous bite, earning a snicker from Madison.

"Yeah, sure. Help yourself out." Madison stifled a laugh, sliding a glass of mango juice towards her. Saige only gave her a sweet smile in response before taking another bite.

"So, what happened with Drew last night?" Raella shot her a knowing smirk and raised her brows in a teasing manner.

Upon the mention of his name, Saige couldn't help but groan. "Oh, god."

"That bad?" Madison asked, already amused at how much the question stirred Saige.

"Kind of? If I remember correctly, the car ride home was painfully quiet. No music, no small talks. Nada. All I got was a quick 'bye' before he sped off like he was fleeing a crime scene."   Saige huffed, swallowing the last bit of her toasted bread. "But!" Her tone brightened. "I forgive him because we're having lunch today!"

"What?!" Raella exclaimed, nearly spilling her juice.

"Damn!" Madison squealed. "And here I thought I work hard. Turns out Saige is out here grinding." She shook her head in mock disbelief.

"And he agreed to this or did you threaten him?" Raella eyed her suspiciously, earning a glare from Saige.

"I can be quite persuasive, you know?" Saige rolled her eyes. "But before you guys get the wrong impression, it's not a date. We're just getting soup. A platonic soup lunch kind of thing." She adds, putting heavy emphasis on the word 'platonic'.

"Still sounds like a date." Madison teased, nudging her playfully.

"What else happened at the club last night? You know, before you ditched us and almost gave us a reason to call the police?"

"Oops." Saige shrugged, her lips curling into a sheepish smile. "Well, remember how I said I was gonna head back to the table because I felt dizzy? Yeah, Drew was there, sitting with Austin, JD, and Rudy. So, naturally, I went over, shook his hand—wait, more like gripped his hand, which was electrifying, by the way—and asked him to come with me to the bar."

"And he agreed?" Madison's jaw dropped.

"Kind of? I don't know, I forgot. Some parts of last night was all fuzzy but it's funny how my brain could remember his mini rejection—" The girls gasped dramatically. "—I know! It's like my brain just decided to store this crappy memory and say let's keep that in HD."

"Dude, he rejected you?!" Madison's tone was a mix between shocked and amused.

"Straight up."

"And you still managed to get a lunch date the next day?" Raella began, pointing a fork at her. "Teach me your ways, please."

"What can I say? I'm irresistible." Saige joked. "All jokes aside, he made it clear last night that he hasn't moved on from Daniela." She let out a heavy sigh.

"At least he was honest," Raella said, her voice more thoughtful now. "And didn't just jump at the opportunity to use you as a rebound."

"I know, he's so sweet." Saige pouted. "Like it hurts that he doesn't like me back but... him rejecting me even though they're no longer together says a lot about the kind of person he is and that just makes me like him more."

"But does he like you?"

"Stop!" Saige frowned, feeling a slight pang in her chest.

"I'm kidding!"

Before she could retort something, her phone buzzed on the island counter, drawing the attention of the two girls. Her heart skipped a beat upon seeing Drew's name pop up on the Instagram notification. She immediately picked it up, eagerness rushing through her. That excitement dwindled almost immediately as soon as she read his message.

She stared a while at the message before setting her phone down with an exaggerated sigh. "Bruh, he canceled."

"Awww," Madison pouted. "Men."

"What a buzzkill!" Raella groaned, throwing her hands up.

"I know, right?" Saige's frown deepened. "I even planned for soup! Who cancels on soup?"

"Drew," Raella replied, as if that alone explains everything. "That's who."

Madison then shot her a mischievous smirk. "Well, guess that means it's officially a girl's day!"

Saige's eyes shot up at the idea. "Let's call Maddie and Laci!" She then suggested, clasping her hands together, already stoked for the day ahead.

"Bro, you're better than me." Raella shook her head. "If my crush canceled on me, I would die."

"Well, it's a good thing JD never cancels on you." Saige teased. "Honestly, I can understand Drew. He was probably busy or something. But enough talking about boys, let's get the girls!"

Though Saige felt utterly gutted about Drew's cancellation, she knew she didn't have the right to be upset at him. She knew it in herself that whatever the reason he canceled, it wasn't her fault and sulking over it didn't help. After all, she was just the girl who would be there when he needed someone to pass the time with; someone who wasn't too complicated or demanding.

Saige hated admitting it, even to herself, but it didn't change the truth. After all, it wasn't like he'd promised her anything. It wasn't like she expected anything from someone who was still pining over his ex-girlfriend.

And yet, the disappointment was there, heavy and undeniable.
