Saige Halley had never been one to shy away from a challenge, and for her, Drew Starkey was the ultimate one. From the moment the first season of OBX premiered, she had developed a liking for him; her fascination growing every time he was on screen.

Yet, fate had always conspired to keep them apart. And the moment she had the chance to bring her feelings to the open, Daniela had already been in the picture. Saige might have loved the thrill of a challenge and taking risky decisions, but she wasn't about to play the home-wrecker role.

Now, things were a little different. Drew was finally single, putting her plans back into motion. There was just one catch—he wasn't exactly jumping into the market for love.

Saige scoffed at the thought before letting out a small sigh. She stood outside of their apartment complex, waiting for him, bouncing her legs in anticipation. Her phone dinged in the front pocket of her hoodie, signaling a notification.

drewstarkey
here.

Saige couldn't help but grin profusely as she read the message. Glancing up towards the parking lot, her eyes landed on his car, parked with its hazard lights blinking. The windows were rolled down, and there he was, leaning slightly out, raising an arm in casual greeting.

With a faint smile, she walked towards his car and slipped into the passenger seat. The air inside carried a faint trace of cigarette smoke, mixed with the subtle scent of leather and a cologne she couldn't quite place.

"Hey." He murmured, his voice low and rough, as if he'd just woken up.

"Hi." Saige gave him a half-smile. "So, where are you taking me?"

Drew couldn't help the small smile tugging at his lips, as he smooothly steered the car out of the parking lot and onto the highway. "You'll see."

"Hmm. FYI, this is kidnapping." She quipped, narrowing her eyes at him, shifting to find comfort in her seat. He only chuckled in response, his gaze steady on the road ahead.

The drive was quiet for a few minutes, just the low hum of the engine and the occasional honks of other vehicles cutting through the silence. The city lights blurred by the windows but the stillness between them felt louder than anything else. Saige glanced over at Drew, his eyes still focused on the road, his grip firm on the steering wheel.

She couldn't tell whether he was lost in thought or was just trying to avoid conversation. Then again, it was him who thought of taking her out tonight. She let the silence stretch on, feeling it settle between them but she didn't mind at all. It was... comfortable.

"We're close." Drew's voice cuts through the silence.

"Okay."

After a few more turns down quiet streets, Drew finally stopped in front of a nondescript building, parking on the side. "We're here?"

"Yeah." Drew nodded, stepping out and heading to the back of the car. He pulled out a bag of chips, some drinks, and a blanket.

"Hmm, rooftop?" Saige guessed, trying to suppress a grin. She moved closer to Drew, grabbing the blanket from him.

"Yeah." Drew said, his tone as calm and casual as ever, before slamming the trunk of his car shut. "Come on."

Saige raised an eyebrow as they made their way up a narrow stairwell and onto a rooftop deck. The city sprawled out before them, lights flickering in the distance, vehicles passing by in a blur. There was something peaceful about it, something fervent and unbothered.

"Not bad," she said, glancing at him. He didn't respond right away, setting up the blanket and handing her a can of soda. "Thanks," she murmured, accepting it with a smile. "You're not usually this talkative, huh?" She blurted out.

Drew let out a low chuckle at her comment before shrugging. "Something like that." He muttered, opening his own soda can.

Saige rolled her eyes inwardly at his dryness before settling on the blanket next to him. They sat for a moment, the sound of the city below was the only thing filling the silence. Saige could sense something was troubling him. He was distant; distracted like his thoughts were light years away. And she knew why. It was because of her. Daniela.

"So, what's up with you and your ex?" Saige couldn't help but ask, her voice playful but cautious. Her eyes searched his face for any sign of discomfort or annoyance but it was empty.

Drew shot her an amused glance, "You really don't hold back, do you?"

Saige smirked, leaning back on her hands. "Well, I'm not asking for the whole story. Just... seems like there's still something there, you know?"

Drew stared at her for a moment before averting his gaze. He let out a heavy sigh, his shoulders dropping a little. "It's complicated."

Saige nodded, choosing not to push him further. She wasn't there to pry or force him to open up; she was just there to be with him. She took a small sip of her drink, then reached for the bag of chips, breaking the quiet. "Well, if you need distractions, I'm your girl. You should be grateful I'm making time for you, especially after you bailed on our soup lunch." She nudged him in a teasing manner, cracking open the bag and tossing a chip in her mouth.

He chuckled softly, a small smile breaking through his face. "Yeah, sorry about that." He scratched the back of his neck, the smile fading slightly. "This isn't a valid excuse but... I had to see Daniela."

The mention of her name halted Saige mid-motion, her fingers still gripping the bag. She hadn't expected him to bring her up tonight.

"Yeah... I kind of know about that." Saige said quietly, her voice tinged with nervousness.

Drew nodded, his gaze drifting to the ground as he grew quiet. "It's been weeks since she broke things off but I don't know, I still feel her. Her presence is dtill there, you know?" He shook his head as if he was trying to shake the thought away.

Saige didn't say anything, allowing him to speak his mind, her heart softening as she watched him struggle with his words.

"I'm sorry," Drew muttered, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "I didn't mean to bring up my ex while I'm here with you. That's the last thing I should be doing."

Saige's heart tugged at his words, the weight of them settling on her. "It's fine, really. I don't mind." Her voice was barely above a whisper.

It wasn't that she didn't care. She did care, more than he could probably imagine. And it hurt her. But in that moment, she wasn't going to let him carry that weight alone. She simply wanted to be there.

Drew let out a sigh, glancing over at her with a mix of guilt and appreciation. "I don't mean to bring the mood down. It's just... sometimes I need to talk about it, you know?"

Saige gave him a soft smile, not wanting the heaviness of the conversation to hang between them for too long. "I get it. You don't have to explain anything." She said. "I'm just here for the distraction." It stung a little to admit it, but it was true.

Drew chuckled, though it sounded a little forced. "You're doing a pretty good job so far."

Saige's heart fell at his words but she quickly shrugged it off, reminding herself that she knew what she was getting into. He was heartbroken, and yet here she was, still trying to be there for him. "Seriously, though," she starts, trying to lighten the mood. "If you need a break from your heartbroken self, I'm all for it."

As the night went on, the atmosphere between them lightened. They spent the next hour talking about random things with Drew finally letting his guard down and opening up to her.

The conversation between them was easy, and Saige could notice he was beginning to warm-up to her, like he wasn't as closed off as before. But she kept telling herself it wasn't exactly about her. She was just a pastime.

Even so, Saige was okay with that. Maybe one day, he'd see her differently. For now, she was just enjoying the moment. She didn't mind being his escape for the night.
