Saige stared at her phone for a few moments before reluctantly setting it down on the counter. Her attention shifted to Drew, who was flipping pancakes as though everything was completely normal. The sizzle of the pancake batter filled the kitchen, and Saige traced the outline of the marble counter with her finger, buying herself time. She let out a deep exhale before clearing her throat, willing herself to face the consequence of her drunken decisions.

"Morning." She said quietly, trying not to sound too awkward.

"Morning," Drew replied, his voice calm and steady, as he glanced over her with a faint smile. "Sleep okay?"

"I feel like I got hit by a moose," she grumbled, lightly massaging her temples. "You?"

"Well enough." His response was concise and definite like he didn't want her to ask any more questions.

Saige nodded, unsure what to say next. For a while, silence filled the space between them—the kind of silence that made her feel nauseous, as if her stomach had turned itself inside out. She nervously tapped her fingers on the counter, her palms sweating as she observed Drew's back. He was still making the pancakes. She wanted to say something—apologize, take accountability for what she said—but she bit her tongue, holding herself back.

"Here," Drew suddenly said, sliding a plate of pancakes, drizzled with syrup, toward her. "Eat. You'll feel better."

"Aww," Saige cooed. "You didn't have to." She teased in a mocking tone.

Drew chuckled lowly. "Wouldn't want you going Godzilla on me early this morning."

Saige rolled her eyes at him, then gave him a genuine smile. "Thanks, Drew. You're the best."

He nodded, then turned around to put pancakes on his own plate. Afterward, he turned to face Saige and dug into his food.

"So," Drew started, and Saige could practically feel her body stiffen, knowing exactly where this was going. "About last night—" He leaned against the counter, crossing his arms.

"Nope," Saige held up her fork, cutting him off. "We're not doing that. I'm blaming the tequila for everything I said and did."

Drew's lips twitched, but his expression remained solemn. "Saige..."

"No," she interrupted, her voice firm. "Let's just... forget it, okay? File it under 'tequila mistakes' and move on."

He frowned as he looked at her intently. "You want us to 'forget it'?" Saige hummed in response. "Look, you don't have to pretend like... your feelings don't matter."

"It doesn't," she lied, forcing herself to meet his gaze. "It was just the tequila rambling, okay? It makes me say things I shouldn't have."

"And drunk Saige just happened to say exactly what sober Saige's been avoiding?"

She winced, dropping her gaze to her food. "Not exactly," she trailed off. "Look, we don't have to make this harder than it already is." She added quietly.

Drew scoffed.

"It's not worth ruining what we already have," she added. "You still have your own stuff to figure out, and... I don't want to add to that."

Drew's jaw clenched as he glanced at Saige, who looked back at him with vulnerability in her eyes—the kind that wasn't hard to miss. Drew could almost see the torment behind her gaze. "You're not, okay?"

"Just pretend none of it happened and... we're good, okay?" Saige swallowed the lump in her throat.

Drew's gaze softened, and he sighed, clearly torn. "You make it sound so easy."

"It is," she shrugged. "We've got this friendship going on. No point in messing it up over something unimportant, right?" She willed herself to face him.

She could see the hesitation in him, clearly still processing everything that had been said and done last night, before he finally nodded. "Right."

Saige nodded, feeling the tension roll off between them. She resumed eating her pancakes, cutting a piece and waving the fork at Drew. "Thanks for breakfast, by the way," she said, her tone light. "You're officially forgiven for interfering with girl's night."

"Glad I could make up for it." Drew smiled, but it didn't quite reach his eyes. His gaze lingered on her a second too long, like he was trying to piece together a puzzle she wasn't ready to let him solve.

And just like that, things felt somewhat normal again. For Saige, that was better than taking accountability for everything she'd said.

Saige once believed that when you're under an incredibly humiliating situation, things become an eye-opener. Like, almost three weeks ago when she had drunkenly professed her feelings to Drew—her pain, her confusion to his mixed signals, all of it. She'd laid it out there for him.

It should have been a mind-altering matter that would, quite frankly, alter her feelings towards him. But that wasn't the case.

Instead, her feelings just grew. Like a plant that keeps thriving, no matter how little attention it gets.

Somehow, Drew fucking Starkey was still deeply rooted in her mind, body, heart, and soul.

And she had no idea what the hell she was supposed to do because she was already in too deep. Was this her chance to prove she was the better choice? That she was the one who could give him what Daniela never could? Or was she doomed to stay the backup plan?

Either way, she knew she'd end up hurt. But like an idiot, she was still willing to take the risk, hoping that one day, he might feel the same way.
