Saige couldn't contain her excitement. A night with the cast seemed like the perfect way to unwind after a long, overworked week. Nights like these were rare given that they were all equally busy. But that just made moments like this even more special. That and mainly because she was looking forward to spending more time with Drew.
It had been days since they last saw each other; since Drew brought her to a rooftop deck, going out of his way to bring snacks and blankets. It wasn't a date, not at all. But the memory lingered in Saige's mind for days. But since then, neither of them had reached out. For Saige, kt was because she didn't know what to say and for Drew, well... he would never be the first to make a move.
Even so, Saige liked the thrill of chasing him, and she couldn't make it any more obvious.
"Hey, are we crashing here?" Raella nudged Madison as the three girls stepped out of the elevator.
Madison nodded, taking the lead toward Madelyn's apartment unit. "You bet."
After a few turns down hallways, they finally arrived in front of her doorstep. Madison knocked lightly on the door. "Five bucks says JD opens the do—" Before Saige could finish her sentence, the door swung open and lo and behold, JD stood before them, a huge smile on his face.
"Hey, guys! Come in!" He greeted, stepping aside. "Here, let me grab that for you real quick." He then took the bag of snacks from Raella, ushering them inside.
Madison and Saige shared amused smiles as Raella thanked JD. Watching their interaction was so cute, it was downright infuriating.
Madelyn then squealed in excitement and jumped off the couch to greet them. "Hey, you made it!" She chirped, engulfing each of them in a tight hug.
"Who are we to deny movie night?" Raella quipped before heading to where JD was setting the snacks.
"Yeah, and we brought snacks and pizza." Madison added with a grin to which Madelyn thanked her.
Saige's eyes darted around the apartment, desperately searching for the one person she had longed to see. Then, her gazed landed on him.
Her breathe hitched. Drew stood in the kitchen, leaning back against the counter, one hand casually holding a bowl of popcorn. For a split second, their eyes met, and he wordlessly motioned for her to grab popcorn.
There was something in his gaze—a glint she couldn't quite place. Saige boiled it down to her delusional self and just gave him a thumbs-up instead. Realizing how weird she looked, she quickly dropped her hand and she didn't miss his low chuckle as he disappeared into the living room with the others.
"Hey, Saige." Madelyn's voice snapped her back to reality. "I stocked up ice cubes since I know you love 'em. Feel free to get." She winked before adding, "We're still waiting on Austin but I'm setting up the snacks and movie already."
"Thanks, Maddie. Love you." Saige said, blowing her a kiss. "Bails, I'm gonna grab some cubes for my soda, I'll catch up in a min." She called out to Madison who was pouring chips into a bowl.
Madison popped a chip into her mouth. "Got you." She replied. She then grabs the bowl and went to the others, leaving Saige alone.
For a little while, Saige lingered in the kitchen, occasionally sneaking glances toward the living room. Drew was seated on one of the couches, his attention focused on the TV as Madelyn scrolled through movie options. Saige could hear the low hum of conversation and laughter happening but her attention remained only on him.
Finally, she grabbed her ice-cold glass of soda and made her way towards them. The moment she stepped into the room, it felt like something in the air shifted. The cast sprawled across couches and foam sets, their laughter poorly stifled in a conspiratorial way. Rudy kept nudging Drew while both Madelyn and Madison exchanging knowing looks.
Drew, on the other hand, wasn't laughing. In fact, he looked visibly annoyed. "Shut up." He muttered under his breathe, his jaw tight as he shot them a glare.
The fuck was up with his ass?
Saige's brows furrowed in confusion as she glanced between them, trying to figure out what was so funny. Then, it dawned on Saige the moment her eyes locked with Drew's. There it was. The only empty seat.
Right next to Drew fucking Starkey.
Her stomach flipped, something giddy rushed through her. They'd planned this. She realized.
A smirk spread across her face at that. "Oh." She said, drawing out the word as she made her way over, her steps light and deliberate. Her hip brushed against his legs as she slid into the space next to him, and she didn't miss the way his jaw clenched.
Oh, this night was going to be so fun.
"Comfortable?" Drew muttered, glancing at her out of the corner of his eye.
"Not yet," Saige teased, shifting a little closer to him. "Almost."
Drew shook his head at her, clearly amused. Here she was again with her relentless flirting. He then leans slightly towards her and suddenly, her throat felt dry as fuck.
Shit.
"You know, you're not as subtle as you think you are." Drew whispered.
Saige's heart skipped a beat at that. Honestly, she was feeling all sorts of things right now. "Oh, I'm not trying to be subtle here, Starkey." She shot back, her grin widening.
Drew gave her a side-eye, the corner of his mouth quirking upward. Before he could reply, a knock sounded at the door, signaling Austin's arrival. Madelyn had already settled on The Conjuring and asked Austin to turn off the lights on his way over.
"I love this movie." Saige commented. "Unpopular opinion but it's my favorite out of all of 'em."
"Agree." Chase replied.
"Didn't expect you to be so keen on horror films." Drew quietly said to her as the film began.
"What can I say? I'm not like other girls." She retorted, her voice dripped with playful mockery.
"Right." Drew chuckled lowly beside her.
From across the room, Rudy groaned. "Can you two stop flirting or do we need to separate you?"
"Shut up, Rudy." Drew called out, tossing a pillow at him, his tone playful but firm. Saige stifled a laugh at him before moving slightly away from him. Not enough to create a gap between them but enough to make him feel more relaxed
Darkness then permeated the room as the opening scene played out. "Hey, if you're scared, you can hold my hand. I won't snitch." Saige couldn't help but whisper to him as if she was saying something seirous.
Drew snorted softly. "Think I'll manage."
"Suit yourself." Saige smiled, nudging him lightly.
A few minutes into the movie, Saige found herself sneaking glances at Drew. Every time he'd glance back, Saige felt a rush of eagerness within her, compelling her to lean a little closer each time.
Saige wasn't blind to the boundaries he had established. And he made that clear each and every time they were together. But moments like this blurred those lines and made her realize it was worth it. That he was worth it all.
And even if he wasn't hers, these moments felt enough. For now.
GWYN'S NOTE.
