Remember?
~
I remember those summer days
When the breeze played tag with our hair,
And our sandal-clad feet carried us
Away, to fields of freshly mowed grass
Large enough to fly kites in.
Your kite was bigger than mine, I remember.
It looked more real when you flew it,
But then you broke it, of course
So I lent you mine and together
We danced through a haze of golden heat.
Remember when you first tasted pain,
You told me of it and you looked so sad
But what could I say, or do, in my ignorance?
You were older than me and you left
Our butterfly realm first.
I remember that day, it was raining.
My mind was still enraptured by deep purple clouds,
I didn't recognize that yours had been shattered.
The rain wept on our dancing umbrellas
And I never saw you again.
Old friend, do you remember me?
You never visit anymore, I miss you.
Often at night, when demons howl, my thoughts turn to you
And I hope I'm not following in your footsteps,
Because even when I ruled with my head in the clouds —
Remember? Even then, I just wanted you to be happy.
