Chapter 7

Hours had passed in which Vayala sat silently on the edge of the roof. Fear was unknown to her. Actually she did... but she knew what fear meant to her, so she never showed it. She was confused and angry All those years, she had thought what Xandar had told her was true. But now, for the first time, doubts began to surface. She was only human? Then why was she so strong and fast? Why did she use magic? And why was she so different from humans? "To jump to one's death seems to me no proper way to die, for a warrior," said a voice behind her. She just shrugged her shoulders as Natasha sat down next to her. "Tony can be a real jerk sometimes... but he only did it to help you. We didn't know you yet. But you needed help. We had a girl bleeding in front of us, that we knew absolutely nothing about. Do you see where I'm going with this?" asked the Assassin. Vayala nodded slightly. "And what is so bad about being human? If you are not from this planet, why do you hate it and all its inhabitants?" she asked softly. "Because the humans are responsible for the death of my parents", Vayala said just as quietly. Natasha did not follow up. She wouldn't find out more anyway, the girl was still too suspicious for that. "But can you blame everyone for the actions of a few?" Natasha asked quietly and left. But this sentence had hit the nail on the head. Until now, she had never thought about such things. When the sun had disappeared, Vayala went back to her room. Thoughtfully. Confused. Angry. She closed the door and took her sword. One last look around before she concentrated and it began to glow. Slowly, she moved it from top to bottom, almost as if she wanted to cut the air. But in fact a glowing crack remained there, grew larger and a portal was created. She took a deep breath and walked through it.

"I have wondered when you would return to me for the first time," said the voice, which she knew only too well. Xandar looked down almost proudly at his student. "Forgive me, Master. I was a little delayed," she said softly. Xandar looked at her. "You were crying." It was not a question. Just an observation. "I am human. Is that true?" she asked coldly, without responding to his statement. "That Stark said I was human. His computer says so. Everyone says that. What other lies have I been told? Am I even from Vanaheim? Were my parents really killed by humans?" she asked and spoke herself clearly in rage. She fell silent as soon as he got up and went to her. "You are not human. You are much more than a human being. But a computer only recognizes what it knows itself", he said calmly. She remained silent. "Have I ever lied to you?" he asked quietly. She remained silent. "I asked if I ever lied to you," he repeated, this time more threateningly. She shook her head. " Well spotted," he just said. Shortly afterwards, she felt the pain before she could really perceive what had happened. One punch and she fell to the floor. A few more as she was lying on the floor. "Don't you dare doubt me again. Or your next punishment will be less severe," he said dangerously quiet. " Yes, master," she said softly. "Good. Now go and fulfill your mission," he ordered her and she dragged herself through the portal and it closed. Moaning in pain she sank down on the bed, just as she was back again. Such punishments were nothing new, after all she had grown up with them. But since she was here she began to think more about it. These people here were not as brutal and cold as Xandar had always told her. In general it was hard for her to keep her anger towards the humans. No. Humans were monsters. They had killed her parents. Xandar had only ever treated her that way because he wanted to make her strong. Feelings were weakness. That's what he always said. He'd only hurt her where she'd already been hit by her battle with the wolf. Surely the people would dismiss it as further evidence of that. Otherwise, it would be difficult to explain... Sighing she laid down in bed and as usual her dream consisted of some memories.

Immediately, all she could think of was the image of her parents lying dead in front of her. Deep cuts on their necks. There was blood everywhere. She sat in front of them, crying and begging them to get up at last. But they didn't. Their eyes remained motionless and stared up at the sky. She remembered how a man came to her afterwards. He had been covered in blood as well. But barely any of it was his own. He knelt beside her and she instinctively pulled away. "Don't worry. I won't hurt you. Come with me. I promise I'II help you. Together we will avenge those who did this to your parents," he said softly. Certainly not the best way to calm a child, but Vayala was alone and helpless. So she went with him. He took her with him and gave her her own room. "This is where you will live now," Xandar said to her and left. Leaving the frightened and sad girl there alone.

Vayala opened her eyes with a sigh. This dream was not a new one. No. Those were the images she saw most. The images that reminded her every day of her task. Revenge. She sat up and moaned softly. Yesterday's pain hadn't completely disappeared. Without a word, she stood up and made a decision. She got ready and went into the kitchen. She looked at Stark in silence. When the others noticed who he was looking at, they also followed his gaze. "I'm sorry", Vayala and Tony said as if from the same mouth. She shook her head at once. "I understand it now. You wanted to help me. I shouldn't have reacted like that", Vayala said quietly. Tony sighed. "And I shouldn't have teased you like that," said this one. She smiled slightly and sat down. "Now that that's settled," Banner began quietly and she gave him her attention, "Well. We would like to examine your injuries after you have finished eating. See how it develops," he said softly. In his gaze, she saw calm. In general, he had a rather calming effect on her. She didn't feel him as an enemy at all, strangely enoughfor her. However, the monster slumbered inside him. Vayala could only nod before she realized her mistake. Her punishment must have left its mark. But now it was too late. She ate her breakfast in silence and thought about how to explain it.
