Chapter 50 - Composition of songs / Brian May in Sparks?

Notes: The video above is from the band Sparks with the song "This Town Is not Enough For Both Of Us"

The song is until legal and successful in 1974. It became a big hit and you will understand throughout the chapter because I posted that song at the beginning of the chapter.

This chapter contains truthful information about Brian May and Roger Taylor that they have almost left Queen to join other bands.

Friday, May 31, 1974.

Freddie POV

While Bri is in the hospital, recovering from hepatitis B, Rog, Deacy and I are working on the band's new album, we are writing songs. Deacy and I are meeting in Rog's apartment this Friday afternoon.

"My dear ones, did you like this song I finished writing?" He said, handing out a paper with music lyrics for Deacy and Rog to read.

- The lyrics are interesting, I liked the song, what is the name of the song? Roger asked.

"The name of the song is Flick of the Wrist," he said to them, smiling. "So this song will be on the band's next album.

"I finished writing Misfire," Deacy said, showing Roger and me the words.

"I also liked the lyrics," Roger smiled. "It's the first song you make, Deacy, I hope it becomes a regular one.

"I'm not a good songwriter," Deacy said.

- Dear Deacy do not underestimate so much - I smile to my friend - Your song will also be on the band's next album.

Roger stood silently staring at a piece of paper.

"And you, dear Rog, want to show us some song you also wrote?" I asked the blonde.

"Well, I finished writing a song right now, but, I do not know if she's good, I need your opinions and Bri's, of course," Roger said to Deacy and me.

- It matches with you Rog, after all a part of the song talks about cars - Sorriu Deacy - Speaking of when will the race be?

"In the second half of July," Rog said.

"Your song is very good, Rog," he told him. "But has not it got a name yet?"

- I think the song will be called Tenement Funster. - Roger said smiling - I am very happy that you have enjoyed my song, now only need to give Bri his opinion.

"I'm sure Bri will like the song, Rog, do not worry," Deacy said with a guitar in his hand.

"I need to show Kate the song, to see what she thinks," Roger said excitedly.

"Do you need your friend's approval, too, dear Rog?" I asked with a raised eyebrow, and Roger smiled.

"Of course you do, I want to show Kate and have her opinion about it too, which to me is very important," Roger said with a smile.

Deacy and I looked at each other and smiled softly. Deacy and I suspect Roger is in love with Kate, but he still did not have the heart to break up with Josephine, much less confess his love for Kate.

- What's it? They're looking at me in a different way. "Roger said scratching his head.

- It's nothing, my dear Rog - said smiling at him - It is better to continue to write new songs. I started writing another song and I want to show it to you.

I showed Rog and Deacy the song I was writing, which has no name yet, but which speaks of a luxury prostitute.

"The lyrics are incredible, Freddie," Deacy said.

"Thank you, my dear, but you're not even halfway through the song yet." I hope it ends her quick to write. I commented with them.

Roger, Deacy and I spent the afternoon, taking out the guitar, the chords of the songs that we will write and we made necessary notes in the notebooks.

Kate POV

Finally it's Friday. It's seven in the evening. I'm leaving my job as an English teacher and heading for the parking lot across the street. I got a booklet insert from the books they were delivering. I smile, therefore, this publisher that I am reading the booklet, are giving chances for new talents in literature. I need to send a copy of my book to see if they are interested in editing my book. I need to show Roger. I'm going home then, I'll go to the hospital with Roger and the boys visit Brian and then we go to a pub with our friends, enjoy the London night.

As I head toward my car, I realize that there is a man, a little distant from me, his face hooded, watching me. Can not it be the same man who tried to attack me at King's College a while ago? Luckily there were security guards in the parking lot too, and I warned one of them of this hooded man. When I warned the security officer ran toward him, but the hooded man disappeared like a cloud. I sigh irritably. Will I now be followed by some madman? I only needed this one.

I get in my car and go to my apartment. As soon as I arrive, I take a shower and a snack and change of clothes and then I call Roger, because he would get Clare and I to go to the hospital to visit Brian.

Brian POV

I was in the hospital, writing some lyrics for Queen's next album, after all I can not sit still either, while my band mates and friends kill themselves to write songs. I finish writing two songs. One is called Brighton Rock and the other is Now I'm Here that talks about our innocent and crazy tour of the United States. I hope the boys like it. There's something else I'll need to tell them, before they know about other musicians from other bands. A short time passed after my dinner at the hospital and my friends arrived. My girlfriend Chrissy was also present. Deacy was present with Veronica, Mary with Freddie, Roger with Josephine, Kate, Tim, Clare, Andrew, Luke, Harry, Sarah and Julianne. The doctor had allowed all of them to enter, but that they would not be long, because he needed to rest. My girlfriend Chrissy would spend the night with me at the hospital. My parents came to visit me during the day.

They all spoke to me quickly and took photos. They asked me how my treatment was going and I explained. After about fifteen minutes, almost everyone left the room, leaving only Deacy, Freddie, Rog and me.

"Dear Bri, we've brought song lyrics that we've written over the course of the week, I hope you enjoy it," Freddie said. "I wrote Flick on the Wrist, Deacy wrote Misfire and Rog wrote Tenement Funster.

I took the sheets from Freddie's hand and read the songs my friends wrote.

"It's excellent," he said, smiling at them. "Congratulations.

"Thank you, Bri dear," said Freddie, smiling.

- I also wrote two songs for the band's new album - Said showing them.

They read the letters and smiled. And I realized that I had finally written good lyrics.

- Dear Bri, that song Now I'm Here speaks about our tour in the United States of America, is not it? Freddie asked, laughing.

"I see you mentioned the name of Peaches, the woman you stayed with in New Orleans here in the lyrics," Roger laughed.

"Yes, it talks about our tour in the United States of America," he said to Roger. "And talk quietly about Peaches, none of the girls can know, let alone my girlfriend.

"Do not play with fire, if the girls knew about such things," Deacy said, laughing.

"Because it's decided that your songs will also be on the album dear Bri," Freddie said smiling.

- I'll write more songs for the album, I want to be useful in the band while I'm here in the hospital - Said.

"Dear Bri, you're useful and indispensable in the band, do not worry," said Freddie.

"There's something I want to talk to you about," he told them.

- What Bri? It's all right? Rog asked.

"The Sparks band has been visiting me," he told my bandmates.

- What a surprise they visit you - said Rog - They are at the peak with the single This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us, the album Kimono My House.

- The Sparks brothers Ron and Russell Mael have been visiting me frequently here in the hospital, asking about my recovery and with a special reason: that guitarist Adrian Fishers left the group. - I told them.

- Did Adrian Fishers leave the group? Deacy asked in amazement.

"Yeah, and they're looking for a new guitarist," he said looking at them. "And they want me in the band, replacing Adrian Fishers. They said that when I leave the hospital I look for them, to join the band.

"And what did you say to them, Bri?" - Roger asked crossing his arms seriously.

"I accepted," I said, mocking Roger. "I'll be part of The Sparks.

"So why did you write songs for Queen, for the next album, Brian?" Roger asked annoyed.

"Look for a new guitarist and have my lyrics for the new album, so I'll earn royalties from the songs," he said seriously.

Deacy and Freddie already noticed that I was making fun of Rog.

"Thank you for the news, Brian, you've proved your good friend," Roger said, bursting with rage.

Freddie, Deacy, and I started laughing hotly while Roger was serious.

"And you're still laughing?" Roger asked in disgust.

"Roger, do you think I'm going to leave Queen anyway?" Never, never will I leave the band, I will abandon you - I told him - I was messing with you.

"At any moment I'll kill you with my own hands," Roger said irritably, then smiled.

- They may have a hit This Town Ain't Big Enough, but, I will not leave Queen, not really - I said - They said to me: Look, your band is good, but of course you will not have any more hits, while we are going to conquer the world. Join us?

"I can not believe they're underestimating our band, I can not believe it," Roger said angrily. "But now we'll have to prove to them that Queen is going to conquer the world.

"They're assholes," Freddie said.

- I refused the offer and said to them: '' I love you, but, I do not think so. I think Queen is on her way to success. "

"Of course we're on our way to success, dear Bri, as for The Sparks, we'll be bigger than them," Freddie said.

"All that is happening reminds me of what happened to Roger in the past," he said, looking at Rog. "Remember when the Genesis band wanted you as a drummer?"

- I remember - said Roger scratching his head.

"I never knew very well about this story of Roger having almost gone to Genesis," Deacy said.

- On January 9, 1971, at the Technical College in Gwell, Barry Mitchell was still on bass, that night we shared the stage with the band Genesis. In this show they were not invited to use the main stage, they had to stay in a place next to the stage - Roger said remembering - And after the show, in the dressing room appeared one of the producers of Genesis and Peter Gabriel, the lead singer of the band that asked and asked several times for me to leave Queen and join the band Genesis. They were looking for a new drummer and they said that I had the profile to be part of their band.

"And what did you say, Rog?" Deacy asked.

"Well, I declined the offer, thank you, but I refused, saying that Queen was my band and soon after my refusal, they recruited a young drummer named Phil Collins. And the rest of the story everyone already knows.

"Yeah," I smiled at them. "Just as Rog did not leave Queen, I'll never leave Queen to go into another band.

"And you should never leave Queen to play another band," Kate said, looking embarrassed. "Sorry, guys, I've heard the whole conversation since Bri said she got the Sparks bandwidth, I came to Freddie, Deacy and Rog, therefore, the schedule of visits has passed. But as you talked about the bands, I was interested in that. Imagine if Roger was from Genesis and Bri from Sparks, Queen would never be the same, not Freddie and John, but you understand what I mean. Sorry to hear everything, but I did not hold on.

Roger approached Kate and hugged her and kissed her cheek.

"It's all pretty cool, as long as you promise this will be just between us," Roger said to Kate.

"I promise, trust me, I will not tell anyone," Kate told us.

Then we decided to show the lyrics of songs that we had already written for Kate and she loved them all.

"Is what I wrote really good, Kate?" Roger asked about his song Tenement Funster.

- It's amazing Rog - said Kate kissing the face of the blonde - And the lyrics are your face, after all, it's about car.

Everyone laughed.

To be continued.

P.S: Frankly I can not imagine Roger as a drummer in the band Genesis, alongside Peter Gabriel or Brian as guitarist in the band Sparks.

For a moment, all of this could have happened and changed the entire history of Rock and Roll. How would Roger be as a drummer in the band Genesis and Brian as a guitarist in the band Sparks? Would they have room to show all genius as complete musicians that they are, as composers?

If for Roger this was a simple decision, maybe for rock history, it would be a radical change, it made me think how important Roger's collaboration was in both the Queen and Genesis.

Leave your opinions.
