Chapter 41 - Roger's Race / Part 01
April 1974
Kate POV
After performing at the Rainbow Theater on Sunday, March 31, on Tuesday, April 2, Queen performed in the city of Birmingham at Barbarellas bar. With that, they ended the tour of the Queen II album in the UK. The next tour will be held in the United States in two weeks, but before that they would have other commitments in London.
Tuesday, April 03, 1974.
Roger went to college with me and for the next few days, he will do tests and jobs that teachers ask him to do. Roger will have to do well to finish college by July of that year. He had said that he attended classes and also did two multiple-choice tests of two subjects. Roger is smart and I'm sure he'll do very well.
On Tuesday night, the band was again recording a few songs for the BBC Sessions. The recordings began at eight-thirty in the evening. My cousin Andrew was there, just as Luke was. We followed the recording of the band. They played and sang three songs: Modern Times Rock'n'Roll, written by Roggie, Nevermore, written by Freddie and White Queen (As It Began), written by Brian. I was also present, I left my work and went straight to the studios, once again had obtained credentials to be present with the boys. Josephine was there, I could not bear to look at his false face. Damn, slut. At the end of the recording, Josephine hugged Roger and kissed him on the lips. Roger just hugged her. I realized he was a little distant. I swear I'm holding back not to say what I saw on Sunday during the Rainbow Theater performance. I was a little thoughtful and Freddie came over and said,
"Dear Kate, is it my impression, or are you a little thoughtful?"
"Sorry Freddie, I was just thinking about some things, unimportant," he said, smiling weakly.
"Is everything okay, my cousin?" Andrew asked worriedly.
"It's all right, my cousin, do not worry," he said, smiling.
Andrew was hugging Clare and I smiled as I saw them hugged. I really hope they can stay together.
Roger was silent, but watching me and shortly afterwards, he approached me.
"I know there's something troubling you," he said, looking me in the eye. "I know you very well, what's going on?"
I took a deep breath and thought to tell him everything. But would he believe me or the excuses Josephine could give?
"I'm just worried about upcoming college exams, Rog, just this." I smile at him.
Roger still looks at me suspiciously.
- I know it's not that, but I'll pretend to believe you - he said to me - So you want to talk about about what bothers you, you know, just look me.
- But, Rog, I'm telling the truth to you, do not worry about me, please, is quiet about it - I said obviously lying and he looked at me.
"Kate, my angel, I will not force you to say what you have, I'll let you feel free to talk about it," he said, looking at me.
Roger kissed my cheek tenderly.
The week went by and Rog went to college and did the assignments and tests. I was going to ride with him. I had to say that he was wrong, after all, I could not say the great reason I was so thoughtful ...
The days went by quickly and Roger was doing very well, in the tests and jobs and the teachers praised him.
Michelle Ma Belle POV
Friday, April 12, 1974.
It is Friday's holiday of the Passion. Still, I'm working at home, providing the necessary services to Joseph Marion and he calls me saying if I had made all the necessary contacts for this weekend.
"That's all right, Mr. Joseph," he said coldly. "Everything you want will be accomplished, accomplished.
"Okay, I hope so, otherwise you'll have your head up for the prize and on Monday everyone will know your secret identity, Michelle, so do a great job," he said to me on the phone.
"Do not worry about it," he said without patience.
"Okay, great holiday and I'll call you back tomorrow," he said, pulling off the phone, and I put my hand on my face and sighed.
Tomorrow will be the big day and I will have to do what Joseph really asks, otherwise I will be discovered, my identity will be revealed and I will be screwed, without any protection.
Kate POV
Saturday, April 13, 1974.
I'm at the London race track right now. Roger has taken a karting and car driving course, driving offensive and defensive for some time and for the first time, he will participate in a race and if he wins, he will make big money. The race will be tomorrow, but today will be the training. I had dreamed that something terrible would happen to my friend actually an accident. I talked to Roger about what I had dreamed about, so he would give up on this race. I talked to him about the dream earlier today.
"Kate, my angel, rest assured that nothing will go wrong." It's a workout, the big race will be tomorrow, I need to win this race and make money, before traveling to the United States of America. Please believe that everything will work out or do you think I do not know how to fly? He asked looking at me.
"Roggie, you drive very well, you drive well, I have no doubt of that, but, I'm afraid something will go wrong," I said looking at him.
"It will be all right, my friend," he said to me, kissing my face.
It's ten o'clock now. We are all at the racetrack, in the bleachers closest to the track. Clare is by my side and I'm thoughtful.
"Kate, you just had a dream, it'll be all right, it'll be okay with my brother," she said reassuring me.
"I hope so," he said as he watched Roger get into the car.
Roger was in pilot clothes, helmet. He was in a car, which was provided by the organization will own the race. The car that Roger is going to drive is a blue Ford Maverick in 1973. Roger looked at us and nodded. I waved back, but, I have a bad feeling.
All cars were on standby and would do a 15 minute test with the vehicles, to see stability, among other things. The start signal was given and all our friends were accompanying Roger inside the Ford Maverick.
"Let's go, Rog, show me on the test that you're the best driver here," Freddie said, smiling.
Roger made the first turn with the car, at a great speed, until further on, I realize that my friend was losing control of the vehicle and he crashes the car, toward large tires that were off the track. All our friends and I look amazed and I scream.
- ROGER! ROGER!
At that moment we all left the bleachers and headed for the beaten car and Roger, because we wanted to know how he was. The test is interrupted. God, I hope my friend did not get hurt.Josephine, the girls and I ran towards the car and the boys, too. I am one of the first to arrive at the crash site.
- ROGER! I shrieked in horror, and my friend was leaning against the driver's seat.
"Help me get Roger's helmet off," she said, startled.
The boys took off my friend's helmet and Roger had his eyes open, a little dizzy. Luck is also that he was wearing a safety belt, all the necessary equipment.
The security guards and paramedics who were on the scene arrive quickly.
"Kate, my angel, is that you?" He said looking at me.
- It's me, blondie - Said looking at him holding in his hand, which had a glove.
Roger with his eyes open, closes slowly to my despair.
- ROGER! I scream again, afraid of losing my friend.
To be continued.
