Love at First Sight (Gaines x Mianite)
Pairing: Maines...? (Devisor Gaines x Mianite)
No summary because I don't wanna spoil it! <3
~~~
It was so unbearably cold, I couldn't catch my breath. Even with the roof from the nearby building hovering over the top of the dumpster, rain was still leaking into it. It's never been this cold, has it? No, I don't ever remember being this cold. Shivering is your body's natural response to cold seeping into the muscles to heat those muscles up, so why isn't it working? Why aren't I warm?
Another cold wind blew in, and I whimpered quietly, pulling my tattered jacket against me closer. I could close the lid of the dumpster, but then I wouldn't be able to breathe at all. The stench in here is unbearable.
I'll just have to tough it out. I can do that. Tomorrow is another day. If I can get to tomorrow, everything will be fine.
But in the back of my mind, I knew tomorrow wasn't going to come. Not if this wind keeps on and the rain never let's up. I'll die of hypothermia, and no one will know because no one in this world loves me. What's the point of surviving if there isn't anything to survive for? It's pointless. They won't find my body when I die, not for weeks. When they do find it, they'll toss it aside and wave it off dismissively. Another homeless teen dead because of the cold. The usual.
I let out a pitiful sob as the cold bit into me again, making my entire body wrack with pain and shivers. Maybe it will be better to be gone from this world. There must be something out in that universe that leads to a better place. This can't be the only thing, this hell. I hope there really is a heaven somewhere.
Tomorrow is another day. I began to solve my latest equation on the side of the muddy green metal, trying to keep my shivering hand steady as I wrote down the numbers with a stick. Numbers are the only things that have stuck with me after all these years. Numbers didn't abuse me. Numbers didn't abandon me to die. Numbers didn't spit on me when I begged for mercy.
Another small sob, I was in so much pain. Every part of me was numb except my hand, the one that was still writing out the equation. At least let me solve it, at least let me solve one last thing before I leave this world forever. I wrote out the last number and let out one last cry, before slumping down and letting the cold take me.
Tomorrow won't come for me this time.
"Hello? Is someone there, does anyone need help?" A far away voice asked. I groaned softly and tried to sputter out a yell of some sort, but I was too tired and my lips felt frozen shut. I weakly hit the side of the dumpster instead, hoping and praying someone knew morse code and would actually understand what I was trying to say.
"Where are you? Are you in this alley way?"
Yes! I am, please come save me. Somebody take me away from this hell. Take me away from the cold and make me warm again. I banged my hand against the metal to signal yes. It wasn't soon after that I saw a face appear above me, a beautiful chilled and perfectly toned one to be exact. Is this an angel? Did an angel come to take my soul away because I'm dead?
"Dear god, what are you doing in here?!"
I don't have much of a choice, I wanted to answer. But my lips were frozen and my brain too, so the only word I could actually form out of my mouth was a small plea.
"H-help."
When I awoke later, I wasn't in the cold dumpster I'd been calling my home for weeks. I was in a warm, safe bed. A bed. It's been so long since I've slept in a bed. This must be a dream. How did I even get in a bed? Who put me here? Why?
"Hello. How are you feeling?" I blinked rapidly a few times to clear my vision, though it never has been clear my whole life, and tried to focus on the object in front of me. A mug. Someone was holding out a mug to me. I could smell a sweet aroma rising from the drink, and I didn't hesitate to take it and start gulping it down. I savored every moment the hot liquid washed down my throat, relishing in the sweet taste of chocolate it brought me. Hot chocolate. It's been years since I've had hot chocolate.
"I suppose you're hungry too. I haven't got much except for apples and...well I could make some sandwiches. Do you like sandwiches?" The angelic voice asked. I couldn't see where it was coming from, my vision seemed to be worse than ever today. I nodded, the very motion making my head throb painfully. I sipped more of my drink until the pain dulled down, and something soft was pressed into the palm of my free hand.
"Eat as much as you like. I have plenty."
I wanted to say thank you, but I couldn't form the words to do it. I haven't spoken a word to anyone in weeks. I think I've forgotten how.
I ate the whole sandwich in two bites, blushing feverishly as I heard the angelic voice chuckle at me. "Would you like another?"
I nodded shamefully, and once again another sandwich was pressed into my hand. Who is this man taking care of me? And why is he doing it? No ones ever given me this much kindness in all my life. He must want something. But what could I have to offer? Nothing, I have nothing. I am nothing but a waste of space.
"Mind telling me your name while you're taking a break from snacking?" He asked kindly. My name? He wants to know my name? My real name?
"Oh come on now, I only asked for your name. You can manage that, I know you can."
"D-Devisor, but...I prefer Gaines." It was odd talking to someone you couldn't see. It was even more odd having a civil conversation with somebody for once in my life.
"Gaines. That's a unique name."
"M-My father gave it to me." My mother should not receive praise for my name. My father thought of it all on his own. He thought I was the smartest baby already, and that the family could only gain from my being born. He couldn't have been more wrong.
"Well look who's speaking up, hm? I'm glad you're finally talking a little, Gaines. Would you mind if I asked you a few more questions?" I felt a sudden grip on my wrist and I jerked back from it, my defensive state immediately kicking in. I won't let anyone else hurt me. Not again, not ever again. Though when I felt he was only placing another sandwich in my hand, guilt flooded me. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. You can't see very well, can you?"
"N-No. Not really." I've always been blind. They always tortured me with the term, blind, because they knew it bothered me.
"Oh well I think I have some...oh yes, here they are. These were a friend of mines. Perhaps they might work for you?" I remained still as something was pushed up the bridge of my nose, and I gasped as my vision became perfectly clear.
The first clear and beautiful thing I ever saw was him. His smile, and his kind eyes.
I felt love at first sight of him.
~
"Gaines?"
His voice alone nearly gave me a heart attack, and I quickly crumbled up the piece of paper I'd been doodling across on my desk. If he had seen that drawing...oh god I can't even think of all the embarrassing possibilities if he saw my name and his surrounded by a heart. I swiveled around in my chair and smiled brightly, trying to seem non-suspicious.
"Oh! Hello! Um, how are things?" That was the most awkward greeting I've ever made in my entire life. Ugh.
He stared at me for a long while, like I'd grown a second head, before shaking his head and going back to whatever it is he was talking about. "I was wondering if you could..." His words drowned out completely as I focused on the way his lips moved, how he so delicately formed each and every word spilling from his mouth with such complete ease that I was almost jealous. How can he talk like that? So smooth and softly, without ever breaking tone?
"So would you?" I suddenly became aware that he was speaking to me, his eyes tentative as he waited for the answer to a question I hadn't heard him ask. Oh god, what did he ask?! I can't ask him now! It'll be rude, he'll think I wasn't paying attention! Which I wasn't but...he doesn't need to know that!
"Yes! Yes of course, I'd be happy to!" I nodded my head furiously to show how positive I was about the decision I didn't even know was about.
He smiled warmly and chuckled, and I nearly melted into a puddle in the floor. Luckily my desk was still behind me, so I gripped it for support as he finished his angelic laughing. "Thank you. You know I wasn't sure you'd be so eager to create a whole new reactor for me overnight, but apparently I was wrong. I should up your pay for being so determined." And with a final wink, he vanished off. I felt my heart sink at the new realization that had dawned over me.
A whole new reactor overnight. I'll never make it.
~
What did I think of him? Oh gods, I thought he was beautifully scary and angelic all at the same time. I didn't know he was a god at the time, I just thought he was a man of wealth. Of course that's not why I went with him. I went with him because he was kind to me, and he was absolutely wonderful in my eyes. I trusted him instantly and he did the same with me.
When he informed me one day his powers were dulling and he was growing weak with age, I didn't stop for three years until I'd built him half a mech suit. I was love sick and I was terrified that he would leave me before I could finish the suit. When he found out I wasn't sleeping because of this project I'd dedicated to him, he made me stop immediately. I only ever got half the suit done, but someday I plan on finishing the rest. I want him to be by my side forever. And if he wants the same for me...then I'll get to work on my suit very soon.
~
Fifteen long, horribly painful hours later and I was slumped over my desk on the verge of passing out. I still wasn't done, but the sun had risen and I was nearly out of time, so I needed to get back to work. I tried to encourage myself, to inspire my body to lift itself off the desk and back to the reactor. No matter how tired I am, I must keep going until I'm finished. I chugged the rest of my coffee and pushed myself to the reactor, picking up where I left off last time.
An hour later, I was done. I didn't hesitate to go over to my desk, throw myself on it, and groan loudly for a solid five minutes. I need sleep, I need so much sleep. My body is overworked. I need to rest.
"Gaines! Do you have the reactor done?" I heard Mianite call. I bite own on my frustration (which was my bottom lip) and sat up so I could face my god when he walked in. He looked so happy when he strode over to me, a huge smile on his lips as he looked at me with pride in his beautiful soulful eyes. "I knew I could count on you, Devi! Thank you so much, I shall definitely be upping your pay very soon. Keep up the good work!" He gave me a pat on the back, and then he left again, leaving me in an absolute mess of emotions.
Devi. He called me Devi.
I'll go through weeks of sleep loss if it means he'll call me that wonderful name again.
~
He found me in a dumpster. I was too young and too old at the same time, it was a curse. I couldn't work because I was too young, and I couldn't apply to the only orphanage/shelter around because I was too old. It was difficult living by myself for so long. It felt like a thousand years to me, though I know it wasn't very long, maybe a few months. I survived on nothing but small donations of a coin or two each day, it was barely enough to get myself fed.
When he found me, he immediately saved me. He saw something in me that even I hadn't seen myself yet. He saw something in the small, scrawny homeless teenage boy living in a dumpster.
To this day, I still don't understand what he saw in me that pushed him to rescue me from that hell.
~
I stared at my bathroom mirror, complete resentment behind my thick glasses as I looked at the hideous pathetic creature in front of me. No wonder he never spares me a second glance, I look horrible. I'm pale, sweaty, I have fat cheeks, my nose is too small, my hair is so nerdy, I hate my bow tie, I hate my sweater vest and I hate my stupid glasses!
I ripped the objects off my face and threw it in the trash bin. I tore off the bow tie, the sweater vest, the khakis, the knee socks, everything that I resented was ripped away from my body. I stuffed it all in the trash and stomped out if my bathroom, going straight to my closet and pulling out the scratchy and uncomfortable muscle shirt I'd bought weeks ago. I dug out the pair of slacks that I never wore and then I found my contacts that I also never ever wore.
When I was done with myself, I looked back in the mirror. I ruffled up my hair, pinched my cheeks, covered up my huge ears, but it wasn't working. I still felt and looked just as hideous as before.
You will never change. You will always be the loser everyone else predicted you'd be. An ugly, lonely, fat, loser.
I broke down into tears. How can everyone else look so perfect? I don't understand it. How can I change the way I am and look like them instead? I'd give anything to look like a decent human being, to be loved by someone who thinks I'm attractive and handsome.
I looked up into the mirror again, crying harder when I saw how ugly I looked while I cried. I hate myself.
I hate everything about myself.
~
It was a small agreement at first, I worked on his machines for him and he gave me all the necessities I needed to live. But after a long while of growing against the other, we became almost inseparable. I'd accompany him to his meetings, he would help me with lab projects, we would sort out files together in my room as we listened to our favorite radio station. I fell him love with him, and I didn't even mean to. The feelings that I developed for him, the love I didn't even expect, was a very very happy accident.
~
I've spent weeks trying to perfect this, and its finally perfect. I've lost ten pounds, I've grown my hair out to the point where I can hide my huge ears behind it, I've been doing constant acne treatments, and I've even bought a new outfit that looks wonderful on me. Everything is perfect.
For the first time in weeks, I actually didn't cringe when I looked in the mirror. I thought I looked decent, and that was the greatest feeling in the world to me.
And along with my new looks, I've gained some more confidence. Mianite hasn't been around in a few weeks, because he's been busy with his god matters and such, and today he's going to visit the lab and see me. I couldn't help but giggle in excitement every time I imagined what he'd say when he saw me. Would he say wow? Would he say I looked wonderful, amazing even? Oh I hope so. I hope he says, 'Devi, you look positively wonderful!' That would make my life complete. I would die happy if he said that to me.
As I waited at my desk for him to show, I began imagining the possible scenarios of what would happen when he saw me. Would he do more than just compliment me? Would he...kiss me? No! Of course not, he would never...but what if he did?
I sighed in contempt at the image. I wonder what his lips would feel like. Soft? Yes, definitely soft. They looks so soft and delicate while he's speaking, they must be soft. How long would the kiss last? A second? Maybe two? I would die if he even came within a foot of my lips, let alone kissed them. Sigh.
"Gaines?" I heard the smooth familiar voice I'd grown to love call out for me. This is it! This is what I've been waiting for for weeks!
I turned my chair around and stood up, clearing my throat and straightening my posture so I looked tall and broad. He was already in front of me, despite how far away he sounded a moment ago. He gave me a simple smile and a nod in my direction. "Ah it's been a long few weeks, hasn't it? How are the reactors doing? Is everything working properly like I asked?" His gaze switched the loud machines lining the walls, a strained and curious look on his features.
The reactors? He wants to know about the reactors?
"Yes...they're doing fine. Is there anything else you wanted to discuss?"
"Oh no, that's all I wished to check on. Sorry to bother you about it. Well I must get going now, I have a meeting to attend to in Urulu. I will see you later, I suppose." He gave a small wave of goodbye, before vanishing, leaving me completely alone and heartbroken.
He didn't even notice. He didn't even look at me! He looked at those damned machines more than he looked at me!
I slumped back into my desk chair and laid my head down, crying silently as I doodled a broken, bruised heart on the side of my blue prints. I will never be good enough. No matter how much weight I lose, how clear my face is, or how my hair is styled, I will always be ugly.
I will never be good enough for him.
~
I already told you why I love him! He took care of me when no one else gave a damn about me! He raised me like his own son, he gave me everything I needed for a happy life, he treats me like I'm his best friend. He's got no one but me, and I've got no one but him. We were outcasted losers who, as soon as we met, found comfort in each other's presence.
I don't know what'd I do without him, or where I would be if I hadn't met him.
I hope he feels the same way about me.
~
"Gaines?"
I sighed, leaning off my hand long enough to ask, "Yeah?" before going back to drawing out new reactor prints. I've decided it's best not to care anymore. I shouldn't care about love, or appearance, or how people see me. I should just focus on work. Getting things done and then starting another project. It's worked so far, I haven't felt that horrible feeling of loneliness in awhile.
I heard his footsteps stop beside me, but I didn't bother to look up. I'll just get lost in his eyes or his lips or whatever the hell else. It's not good for me to look at him anymore. Working is good. I just need to keep drawing and stay focused on my pencil.
"I was wondering if you'd like to accompany me to a meeting? I'm not requiring you to go, but I very much would-"
"I'm busy. New reactors and such." My tone almost sounded sarcastic. I've hardly ever used sarcasm before. Then again, he doesn't really get sarcasm, so that's probably why I've never used it.
"Oh yes! I understand completely. Perhaps maybe tonight you can help me sort out-"
"I'm busy. I can't."
"...When aren't you busy, Gaines?"
"I'm always busy. And when I'm not busy with your work, I'm sleeping or eating or using the restroom. Would you want me to cut out one of those necessities so I can help you with more work?" I couldn't believe my own words. I've never been so mean to him, why am I being mean to him?
Because he never paid attention to you, so you're doing the same to him.
That's a pretty good explanation but...I've never liked revenge or getting even, I've always been the bigger person. I suppose I'm sick of getting stepped on all the time for being the bigger person.
"Gaines. Look at me."
His voice sounded so soft and sweet, I couldn't disobey him. I looked up from my prints to stare at his forehead, so I wouldn't have to look into his eyes and get lost in them.
"In the eyes."
I sighed and shifted my gaze to his eyes. They looked...worried. Worried? Is he worried about me?
"Gaines please tell me what's wrong. It isn't like you to be so angry all the time. What's got you like this?"
"You," I spat angrily. "You've got me like this."
His features softened even more, and a look of pity showed in his eyes. "I was afraid of that. Have I been overworking you? Do you need a break? I'll give you as many days off as you need-"
"It's not that! It's- ergggg!" I groaned and slammed my head in the desk, making some of the pencils fall to the ground and my blueprints to crumble underneath the weight of my head.
I felt a warm soft hand on my back begin to rub circles into it, making my nerves instantly calm and my anger melt away. "It's what Gaines? Tell me, I'll understand. What is it?"
I have to tell him. I can't spend another day without him knowing how I feel about him. I have to know what he thinks.
"I'm in love with you, and you don't even consider me as your friend. I've tried and tried to get you to notice me, I've changed myself over and over and you still...you don't even care. I'm just your work puppet who fixes your reactors and makes the left side of your body work..." I didn't dare show my face as tears dripped down it, falling onto the metal service of my desk. "Did you even notice me that day you came back after weeks of being gone? Did you see the changes I made for you? How could you have not seen how much I loved you?"
"Of course I noticed the changes! I noticed everything you did Gaines! How could I not have?"
"Then why didn't you say anything?!"
"Because I-...was scared."
I raised up from my desk and stared at him, my mouth completely agape. He was scared? A god, scared? He's lying.
"You were not."
"I was! Gaines you mean the world to me, I rely on you more than anyone I've ever met before. Having feelings for you that were more than strictly platonic just felt...like I was violating you somehow. I didn't want to lose you because of my silly feelings. And I didn't realize you had any feelings for me, I thought I was the only one experiencing them."
"Violating me?" I repeated, the phrase strange to me.
"Yes. Gaines if you were thousands of years old and you developed feelings for someone that wasn't even a tenth of your age, wouldn't you feel horrible for having those feelings? I felt disgusted at myself for having feelings for you, because I thought it would be wrong to even consider such a thing with...with the small, cold and helpless teenage boy I found in the dumpster."
I blushed, my throat going completely dry because of the words he'd used. I can understand why he felt that way now. I suppose I would too.
"Age, gender, and all of those things have never been any of my concern. If you were three billion years old and a woman, my feelings would never change. I would still love you."
He smiled then, the biggest smile I'd ever seen him wear. "Well if we're being honest, when I saw you the day I returned, I had to avert my eyes so I wouldn't end up pulling you into my arms and kissing you senseless. But I want you to know that I will love you no matter how you look. As long as you are happy with yourself, I am happy too."
He wanted to kiss me that day? My stomach fluttered with butterflies at the beautiful image in my head. Oh I wish he would've kissed me. It would've saved me so many weeks of suffering and starving myself.
"I'm happy when you acknowledge my looks..." I murmured quietly. It's okay to fish for compliments, isn't it?
"I think you look wonderful all the time, but right now, I don't believe either of us are enjoying this new diet you're on." He motioned towards my upper body, which was extremely thin and bony. He's right. I don't like this diet of not eating at all.
"I'll stop, I promise. But just to be sure of everything...are we-?"
He put a finger up to my lips, and I hushed instantly. I watched as he reached his hand into his pocket, retrieving a pair of glasses I found very familiar, and carefully sliding them up the bridge of my nose. He smiled, and this time I could actually see his smile without squinting. "We are whatever you wish us to be Gaines."
I grinned and touched the side of my glasses, relishing in the comfort they gave me just by being over my eyes again. It was just like the first time "Can we be together?"
He nodded, taking my hand and squeezing it softly. "Of course. Now let's go get you a sandwich. I can't say that I really enjoy toothpick Devi."
~
Of course he told me some more things later after I confessed to him. He told me he'd been in love with me for a very long time, though he wouldn't tell me when it started. I think he's still scared I might run off because of his age. Maybe he started loving me very early on, even before I loved him, and that's what he's afraid of telling me. But age doesn't matter to me. I have a tiny hope in my heart that when he found me that night in that dingy old dumpster, that he saw something in me that was more than a potential lab assistant.
Perhaps he saw me as his future partner.
