Song: Hold Me Down by Halsey
~~~
"Rose, if you had a little brother, what would you want his name to be?" It was a weird question to ask early in the morning as we ate breakfast, but I wanted to know. I had another dream last night. It wasn't a nightmare this time, more of a normal dream that kinda put me in an okay mood when I woke up. It had been like the nightmare I had about the bloody baby, but this time it was much less horrifying.
Tom was wheeling me down a white hallway as I held my bulging stomach, but I wasn't in as much pain as I had been before. I just felt bloated and exhausted. Tom isn't wearing a surgeons outfit, he's wearing a baby blue flannel shirt and some light blue jeans. He looks a bit older, actually. His hair is grown out a little more and he's taller, for sure. He doesn't have his purple hair anymore, just his natural color. It makes him look more...fatherly. He smiles down at me as he wheels me, and it puts me at ease. I'm pushed into a white room and Decs here, along with Champ. They're both smiling at me when we come in. "Are you ready?" Dec asks me. I nod, even though I'm not sure if I am.
The pain is bad, but not as bad as it was in the first dream. Tom holds my hand and tells me everything is gonna be okay, and pretty soon after it is. Champ holds a newborn baby in his hands, all wrapped up in a quilted cream blanket.
He smiles warmly at me and says, "It's a boy!"
It was a weird dream, not as weird as the last but weird nonetheless, even though when I was inside of it it felt perfectly normal and natural. That's what I want, I realized. That's how I want it to go if I take the fertility potion. It will be weird and unnatural and probably really gross, but if it means I'll have another little human to take care of, then I'm ready for it.
"Bacon!" She giggles. I smile and roll my eyes. So much for her picking out the baby name.
"Hey I like bacon pretty well, I think we should use that." Tom grins at me from the stove and continues to fry the bacon he had in his pan.
"I'm not naming a baby bacon, the poor child would never live down the name. Actual names, boy names. You've got to have one in mind Tom. Tell me."
"I like Travis, but you probably disagree with me."
I shrugged and took another bite of my toast. "Travis is okay. Any others?"
"Jordy," he mumbled.
I paused to narrow my eyes at him. "Tom. No."
"Aw come on, you wanted my opinion! I like Jordy, it would be so cute."
"I'm not naming one of our kids after us."
"Fine. Luke?"
"No."
"Devin?"
"Nope."
"Aaron?"
"No way."
"Then I don't know! You asked me and those are my favorites."
"Name a few more, I need some options."
"Why? I thought you didn't want to do that thing, I thought it freaked you out."
"Well...it doesn't seem so bad now." Now that I've seen how well it could go if it actually happened.
"Alright fine. Danny?"
"No."
"Troye?" (A/N BAE)
"Cute, but no."
"Jack?"
"Hm. I kinda like Jack." Jack and Rosie. That sounds cute.
"Nah we can come up with something better. We just gotta wait for it." He finished frying his bacon and placed an extra piece on my plate before putting one on his.
"Why'd you give me extra bacon?" I questioned.
"Because you look like hell today."
"Tom!" I pointed at Rosie, who didn't even seem to be listening to our conversation. She was too busy arranging her eggs and bacon to look like a smiley face.
"What?" Tom asked innocently biting into his piece of bacon. "Isn't like she's gonna repeat it anyway."
The clattering sound of a fork hitting the floor sounded, and soon after a small bloody hell by the little girl seated beside us was heard. My mouth fell open at the words that just left my daughters lips.
"Er...Rose, don't curse in front of poppy, alright? He doesn't really like it all that much." He winked in her direction and she smiled deviously.
"Okay daddy." And then she went back to sorting her breakfast.
"Are you saying she can curse in front of you and not me?" I gasped.
"Hey, it's her life Sparkley pants. She can curse if she wants to."
"She's not even a year old and she knows how to curse!"
"And she slapped a god daddy in the face! Are you forgetting that? Why are you always pointing out the worst in things?"
"I'm not!"
"Yes you are! Just because you have these stupid ass dreams doesn't mean you have to be such a downer all the time! All I wanted was for us to have a nice meal together before we're off to have our asses handed to us! And we can't even have that because you won't stop being such a bitch about your stupid little feelings!" He obviously had been building that up for a long time, because when he finished, his face completely paled and the pan fell from his finger tips. I was hurt. The words stung me pretty badly, but they were true. I ruined breakfast for us. I ruin a lot of things with my depressing demeanor.
"Jordan I-I didn't mean that-"
"No, it's okay. I am being a downer. Let's eat breakfast." I motioned for him to sit down, this time making sure to smile as I looked up at him. He still looked weary of the situation. Rosie had stopped playing with her food to stare at us, but she wasn't crying like she usually did when we had an argument. Maybe she's gotten used to it.
Tom looked over to her and sighed. "My bad baby girl, I know you don't like us arguing."
Rosie only shrugged her small shoulders and went back to her breakfast. "S'okay daddy. The purple lady says it's how you and poppy show your feelings."
Thank you purple lady.
"And purple lady also says the grass has more boo boos."
Tom and I both froze. Something about that sentence filled me with absolute dread. What had she said yesterday about the grass having a boo boo? She was skipping beside us and then...the crack in the ground. She's saying there's more of them. I rushed outside before Tom could stop me. I heard him yell at me to wait, but I ran out the door anyway.
I really should start listening to people.
The ground wasn't there. I screamed as I fell and my arms lashed out wildly to catch something to keep me from falling, and I barely managed to grab on to a ledge before I could plummet down. It was a stupid idea, but I looked down as soon as I steadied myself. It was dark, completely dark. It didn't look like it had an end.
Falling forever. I don't want to do that again.
Before we came here, we fell for the longest time. Jumping into a bottomless pit in Ianerea was probably the scariest thing I ever went through. That feeling you get when you fall, the kind that makes your teeth clench together and makes you feel like your hearts in your throat, that feeling lasted a long time. It was the worst feeling in the world and I prayed and prayed it would stop when it started, and it didn't stop until-...until Tom helped me. Maybe he saw how terrified I was and what kind of torture I was going through inside my head, because while we were falling, he pulled me close to him and held my hand. Of course when we jumped, he had been holding my hand, but when we fell we all separated and I was alone for the longest time just falling. He held my hand and it made the feeling go away.
"Almost there," he had said to me. "Just breathe."
He had no clue where we were or if we were landing, he just wanted to reassure me and give me something to hope for. He wasn't scared when we fell. He was brave and fearless.
I'm not.
I clawed at the ground above me, but it was slick with rain water and I couldn't get a good grip on it. I kept slipping, my heart was in my throat and I felt like I was choking. I looked down into the darkness again as I struggled to hold on. No bottom. I'll fall forever again. But this time, I won't have Tom to save me. I won't have anyone to save me.
Wrong.
Hands gripped my wrist and pulled me to safety, and I felt like crying when my body touched the ground again. I thought it was Tom at first, because he was the closest one around, but I was startled when I looked up and saw Tucker looking back at me. "I see you've noticed the craters too. Yeah, they're kind of a problem."
I only nodded and swallowed dryly, turning my head to look back at the crater. It was huge. If it was any bigger, it would swallow up Toms tree completely.
Oh my god my family is in there.
"Hey? You alright?" Tucker shook me a little, and I tried to frantically tell him with my eyes that Tom and Rose were in the tree that was about to be swallowed up. I think he caught on pretty quickly. "If you want me to go get Tom and Rosie, I'll fly over and get 'em. Just try and stay away from the huge craters, alright? They're everywhere." He raised up and began walking towards the huge crater, like he was actually going to walk over the edge. But I sighed in relief when I saw his shadow clouds begin to appear under his feet. They formed a small bridge across the crater, and soon the entire hole was covered up by solid cloud. I waited in the grass while he went in to get Rosie and Tom.
Wait. Did Tucker say there were more of these?
I shakily stood to my feet and looked out towards the horizon. He hadn't been lying. They were everywhere, some small and thin, others huge and long as a train. What caused these?
Nevermind, I already know the answer to that.
I'm surprised Botan didn't send a crater right across the tree or the refugee camp. Then he could've killed all of us and he wouldn't even have to worry about ending us anymore. I wonder why he didn't do that.
"Sparklez?"
I looked up and met eyes with my husband. He held Rosie on his hip and a large suitcase in his hand. I guess he packed up some of our stuff in case the tree gets destroyed. I hope it doesn't. This place means so much to us, I don't want it destroyed.
"I'm fine. Just a bit spooked." I took the suit case from his hand so he wouldn't have so much to carry. He smiled and nodded, before turning his gaze toward the horizon.
"Wow," was all he said at the image. Wow indeed.
"Alright, the groups having another meeting about this whole situation at camp, so we should probably go ahead and get down there. And Tom don't worry, the wizards are too busy sealing up holes to come to it so you won't have to put up with that one stick in the ass wizard." Tucker walked back across the crater, and the shadow clouds dissipated under his feet. They both laughed together. I'm still not feeling well.
The meeting was boring. I couldn't pay attention, I felt jumpy and nauseous. Mot was leading it and Gaines was here for some reason, but I had no idea what they were discussing. I'm not usually so distracted, but my mind kept wandering to other things going on around the camp. There were families walking around, talking and laughing with each other like they weren't in the middle of a war with the father of the gods. I could see two people sitting on the steps of a shelter house together holding hands. Some kids were playing frisbee, and they giggled like crazy when a dog ran by and snatched the toy away from them. I wriggled my fingers, making some purple lilac flowers sprout up near the couple on the steps. The girl gasped and plucked one, before sticking it behind the boys ear. He made a stink face, unamused by her antics, and she giggled. They're in their own little word.
I flicked my wrist and looked to where the kids were playing, just in time to see a herd of butterflies swarm them and land on their heads and noses. The little children tried to chase after them and catch them with their hands, but the winged creatures were too fast for them. I chuckled to myself when a little girl managed to get one to land on her pinky finger, the little girl with the crutch that I grew to favorite very quickly. How could anyone want to hurt these people?
"Poppy?" I felt a tug on my pants leg. I looked down and met eyes with Rosie, who looked like she really needed to tell me something.
"Yeah Rosie?" I asked, whispering. I bent down to meet her eye level so I could hear her better. No one was paying attention to us, thankfully.
"He wants to talk to you."
"...who Rose?"
"The bad man. He's in your safe place."
"My safe place?"
She poked my pants pocket, and that's when I felt it. My key, the specter key. Oh my god I forgot about my specter dimension. He's in my specter dimension.
"He can't hurt you poppy, he just wants to talk to you. I'll tell daddy you went on a potty break."
"Who's telling you all of this?"
"Who do you think?" She giggled.
I grinned. "You're too smart."
"Maybe you're just gettin' old." She giggled again, mischief glinting in her eyes. Crap, she's evolving into Tom way quicker than I thought. I bet he's secretly teaching her how to diss me behind my back.
"Maybe your dad is turning you against me."
"Daddy didn't do nothin'..." She lied, grinning behind her black mess of curls. I chuckled and brushed her hair away from her eyes so I could see her little villainous expression. She looks so much like Tom.
"Yeah daddy is in trouble the next time I see him. Go distract him, alright? I'll be back soon." I kissed her forehead and pulled the key out of my pocket, squeezing it tightly as I began to shimmer. I watched Rosie wave as I vanished away. I'll be back soon, I know it. It's going to be fine.
He was there. As soon as I came in, I saw him. Behind the clear thick walls, he was standing silently, unmoving and just watching me. I already felt angry. He has the nerve to show his face after he killed those people. It's disgusting.
"Hello there. I assume your little one told you of my visit?" His voice didn't scare me anymore, it just made me irritated.
I didn't move an inch towards the wall, but I did speak up. "Yeah. She did. Why are you here?"
"Can't I ever pop in to say hello?"
"Shut up. What do you want?"
"To...explain things more carefully. I'm growing tired of hearing you and your little pals blame me for everything."
He's joking, right?
"What? I watched you kill a damn nurse, I watched you try to take my daughter from me! Are you saying that's not your fault? Are you kidding me? Tiff and Lola-"
"Weren't slain by me. Why are you so quick to judge champion of Ianite? I've done some impressionable things, but you can't credit me for every bad deed that goes on in this world."
"Then who killed my friends?" I seethed at him.
"You caused your friends deaths. The gods caused your friends deaths, I had no part in them."
"That's a load of-"
"Truth? The gods are dead and the only one left is weak enough to be mortal. The god quintessence of this world is nearly gone, that is what's destroying your precious home and killing your little friends. Didn't you hear your little wizard friends when they told you god quintessence keeps this world together? The weather patterns, the increase in blood moons, the ferocity of mobs growing, that is all your fault."
"Okay fine, let's say the weather is because of the lack of god quintessence. Why did you try to kill me and take my daughter? Why did you kill Helen? What's your motive behind that?"
"I was trying to save your precious world from falling apart. You and your family contain enough god quintessence to buy this pitiful place some time. Killing any one of you would probably save this meaningless waste of space. As of the nurse, she was an obstacle in my true intentions. But I can see now that you are a selfish being and you don't deserve my help. My daughter I had a soft spot for, yes, it is why I didn't stand back and watch this world burn. I thought by chance you would be like her, selfless and just, ready to serve and protect in whatever way you can. I was wrong. Now I don't mind watching you all die. Not only will I watch, I will contribute into destroying this place and everything that resides in it. If you attempt to revive my pathetic excuse of a son, Dianite, then you will die. All of you. This talk has been rather pleasant, but I must be going now. I have more holes to create." He began to raise his hand, probably to teleport away, but I caught him with my words.
"How did Tiff and Lola die? Did you do that because they were an obstacle too?"
He shook his head. "Devote followers of the most pathetic god killed them. Someone has told them all that sacrifice is the only way to save their world. Your doctor friends failed to see that there were mortal prints on those girls bodies. How does it feel to be betrayed by your own kind, dear champion of Ianite?" He chuckled darkly, before vanishing into the air in a cloud of black fog.
People killed Tiff and Lola. People, actual people, human beings, killed Tiff and Lola.
Maybe he was lying. He could very well be lying about that whole thing, just to get me to trust him and fall into a trap or something.
"You should learn to accept the truth, little hero."
Chill bumps broke out on my neck at the sound of his voice in my ear. He's behind me, isn't he? Of course he is, if Ianite could get in here so could her father.
"Although I do pity you in some ways. To come so far in your small life, only to have all of it burn away around you. Or...in this case, fall around you." He chuckled, the chill of his breath made more goosebumps appear on my arms. "See? I'm not attempting to end your life. Surely you believe me now?"
I scoffed. "I should believe you because you're holding back on trying to kill me?"
"I would think so. Tell me the reason you are 'holding back' on your usual antics? I recall you threatening me many times, the death threats and promises of ending me have almost offended me. Why have you given up on those?"
Because somewhere in the deep dark corners of my mind, I know he's never lied to me before. He's always kept his promises. In a sick, twisted way...I guess I trust him.
"You aren't lying, are you?" I asked, lowering my head.
"No child, I'm not. Man itself is more wicked than the father of gods and shadows. Even I couldn't rip a child of its parents. My mortal wife, Akemi...cruel to her, I was. But never would I have murdered that woman. The children were dear to her and she was the only reason why I decided against killing those abominations as soon as I realized what they were."
Akemi. That's his wife's name? The wizards never mentioned he had a wife. Although I guess he had to have had one if the gods were born. But what woman would want to be with a guy this evil?
"Why are you telling me this?" I snapped at him.
"I suppose I should tell someone the truth of my story, even if it is some puny mortal with the life span of a fly. So tell me Jordan, I'm oh so very curious to know since both my sons have taken up on this dastardly deed...what is it like to be an abomination of man?"
Abomination of man? Jeez, a minute ago this guy was complimenting me.
"...what are you talking about?"
He chuckled at my ignorance, moving to stand in front of me. "Oh I've forgotten the term most used to describes these things...though some of your Dianitee friends have mentioned it a few times to describe your little friend Tom, which I overhead purely by accident."
I knew that one was a lie. Purely by accident means he was eavesdropping, and it kind of makes me angry that he was around Nade and the Modesteps while we weren't there to protect them.
He started circling me, making small slow steps with his hands held behind his back, examining me like I was a caged animal in a zoo. I kept my eyes glued to the invisible wall in front of me. I don't want him to think I'm actually afraid of him, even though I'm actually petrified to be within five hundred miles of him.
"I will try my best to use the term correctly. Tell me what it's like to be a faggot, little champion?"
Rage. I lunged out and grabbed him by the collar, slamming him against the wall and wrapping my hands tightly around his pencil neck. He cackled maniacally through my choking him, like the act didn't even faze him. "I'll kill all of them!" he laughed, "every last one! The creeper boy first and then the little scrawny one, and then your precious zombie! Would you prefer your own death death or being tossed away into a realm without your family by your side? I myself can't wait to see my sons crumble at their knees at the sight of their lovers blood!"
"YOU WONT TOUCH THEM!" I bellowed, nausea rising up my throat while my head throbbed with anger. "ILL KILL YOU FIRST!"
"Watch the world burn like the wicked mortal you are or watch those you love die before your eyes! I've lived for centuries and centuries, I've killed thousand upon thousand of men, I murdered my own blood, you can't stop me! I know your weaknesses and I know your greatest losses! I'll destroy you with them, starting with torturing your dreams with that captain you loved so much! What was her name? Kate? Too bad she died at the hands of Furia and you were too slow to save her from rotting!"
"SHUT UP! HOW DO YOU KNOW, HUH? HOW DO YOU KNOW ABOUT KATE?!" I screeched demonically. He never stopped laughing, no matter how tight I crushed his neck.
"Don't you remember me Jordan? A certain Dianitee named Nade betrayed every lot of you so he could serve me! I crawled through your land at night, studying you, getting to know your every flaw, every weakness! You never saw, you never suspected me! The dark was the perfect place for me to hide while I learned how to destroy you! If you'd stayed in that land a moment longer, I would have ended every single one of you pathetic worshippers!"
It clicked instantly. Nade betrayed us long ago for some force he called 'The Shadows', but after Capsize was killed and we went off to save Ianite, Nade forgot all about the force to help us save the two girls. He apologized later and...we never heard about The Shadows ever again.
Botan grinned at me through the darkness of his hood when he saw realization dawned upon my face.
"The Shadows," I whispered with widened eyes. "You were The Shadows."
Botan was pleased with my answer. He kept the same satisfied grin on his face. "I know your every flaw. Revive my son, and I will destroy you. Whether that be physically or on the inside, I can promise you that you will never be the same."
And with those last words, he vanished in an explosion of grey smoke.
~~~
I'm not exactly sure if that's what Botans intentions were but I tried and I really didn't want to shuffle through episode after episode to try and find the one where he talked to Jordan so...I winged it. See? THIS IS WHY IM SO BAD AT WRITING SHDNSUDNEJSJSNJD
I'm having a bad day. I'm sorry. I'm gonna go stare at Phil Lester's face for awhile and maybe respond to your guys comments after. If you have any questions or anything you want to ask me, I'll answer them in da comments :3 I love you and have a great day!
