Chapter 70: A Small Pink Crutch.

I CANT THINK OF ANY SONGS SO JUST APPRECIATE THIS LONG SENTENCE OF BOLDED CAPS LETTERS BYE
~~~
"SPARKLEZ GET THE KIDS!" My husband shouted to me from down the street, before taking off into the sky with the two refugee women on his back and in his arms. I ran towards the small school house a couple blocks down, where I could see a small group of children gathered outside of it, they're teacher in front of them trying to calm them down in their terrified state. Once I got to them I spat out the same explanation I'd been giving to the other refugees.
"My name is Sparklez and I'm here to take you someplace safer, alright?" It was rushed and clumped together, but I think they understood me. I motioned for them to come over to me, but the teacher stepped in front of me with her arms crossed and scowled.
"How dare you rebel scum set foot into our village! You worship Ianite, how are we to trust you? You killed king Helgrind and destroyed Dagrun! Why I should pummel you-"
"Ma'am with all due respect, would you rather me save these kids or let them face off with that?" I pointed at the lava pouring down the mountains like flood water, all of it rushing down to destroy what was left of the small village. The teacher paled and caught her breath, before taking a step back and letting the kids come forward.
"Two of you get on my back and two of you climb on my shoulders," I instructed hurriedly. They did as I said and climbed on me, and after getting all of them on there was only one little girl left. She was on a pink wooden crutch, her leg was a bit smaller and deformed than the other one. She had tears stains on her pale cheeks and in her ocean blue eyes. I smiled at her and waved her forward. "Come on, you can ride up front with me!" I said cheerfully. She smiled a little and limped over, and then I scooped her up into my arms and stuck her crutch into my arrow bag. I was about to take off when a squawk from the teacher stopped me.
"Are you just going to leave me here stranded?!" She shrieked.
"No, my husband should be coming back in a few seconds to get you." I slid on my angel ring and allowed my wings to slowly come out, careful that I didn't hit one of the kids with one of them. I was already taking off when I heard one last squawk from the teacher.
"Husband?!"
I flew off towards Dagrun at the fastest speed I could without scaring the kids to death, though I doubt they were scared at all at this point. Some of them giggled and cheered as I flew, and the little girl I was carrying in my arms squealed the entire time with joy.
I need more kids.
From the sky I could see the lava spreading quickly down the mountains and the blood moon rising slowly up on the horizon. We don't have much time before the mobs come. I hope Tucker's ready for them.
Finally Dagrun came to view and I began to fly down, towards the huge fenced in area just beside the town that Wag had built for the refugees. I'm impressed actually, it only took him two minutes to build the whole thing. Which he is a wizard, so it probably wasn't that hard for him. I landed abruptly on the grass, making a few of the kids squeal from the sudden impact. Martha was waiting by the first shelter house with blankets in her arms and a clipboard with all the parents names on it. She jogged over to me and helped the kids down from my back and shoulders, wrapping blankets around each one and telling them to go towards the pink shelter house that she'd been standing at. I pulled the crutch out of my arrow bag and handed it to the little girl in my arms, before letting her down slowly on her good foot and letting her adjust herself on her crutch. When she was all set to go and Martha had a blanket around her, I thought it time to leave and go save more people from the village. I turned in the direction of the burning village, but a tug from my pant leg stopped me from taking off. The little girl was on the verge of tears as she held on tightly to my pant leg.
"I scared Speriols."
Speriols.
I shook the memory away and focused my attention on the small girl in front of me with glittering blue eyes. "It's okay, you're safe here. Miss Martha's gonna find your parents for you and I'll come back later to see what you're up to. Okay?"
She nodded, a little less sadness in her features than before. Martha beckoned her forward towards the shelter while I prepared to take off again.
The lava was getting closer to the homes and the blood moon was already up before I even set foot back in the village. I ran from door to door whilst battling mobs to search for any more kids, but it seemed like most of them and the adults had gotten out safely. I went in the direction of where Tom was supposed to be evacuating people in case maybe he needed some help. The village seemed to be small from above, but really when I was trying to get to the other side of it, it felt huge. I made it after five minutes of battling mobs and skipping over the small fires they were making. If I turn one more corner I should be there.
The sight I was met with when I turned the corner made my stomach lurch.
Bodies, some laying on the streets and others strewn over doorsteps and porches, were everywhere. Almost all of them held weapons in their hands or armor on their bodies. They must've tried to fight the mobs themselves, but it didn't work. Where was Tucker? Where was my husband? Why did no one protect them?!
"Hey Jordan! Come help me out over here!" I heard someone call. I saw Tucker, fully dressed in his Mage armor, trying to move a huge boulder that was in front of a small house. I felt my blood boiling as I stomped over to him, completely enraged that he didn't do the one thing the wizards assigned him to do.
"Why are the dead people littering the streets?! Why didn't you save them?!" I shouted angrily at him.
"They were already dead when we got here!" He snapped at me, eyes like daggers through his helmet. "Don't bite me in the ass for it! Help me move this damn boulder, I can hear a kid crying in there."
I gritted my teeth and threw my fist against the rock as hard as I could, making it pulverize into dust beneath our feet. I actually heard Tucker gulp nervously, before he opened up the nearly smashed in door with haste and rushed inside. I could hear the baby now, wailing at the top of its lungs from far back in the house. We stepped inside and the first thing we saw were a woman and man laying on the kitchen floor with their neck turned at an odd angle. The parents were killed and the baby was spared.
Botan. Botan did this. He made the volcano erupt, he sent the mobs, he killed the people before we could get here.
"I've seen too much of this shit today..." I heard Tucker mutter, shaking his head and walking off to the room where the baby was crying. The mother had been holding a baby bottle when she was killed, it was by her side now with the milk spilled all over the floor.
I can't wait to kill that bastard.
I ripped my eyes away from the scene and headed to the room where Tucker was. He was rocking it when I came in, and it seemed to be working really well since the baby was already quiet. It was a girl, she couldn't have been more than a few weeks old. Her baby blanket was made of sheep's wool and her cradle birch wood and cows leather. They were a poor family, but they made ends meet with what they had. I bit down on my lip to keep it from quivering.
I grabbed the baby's stuff near the crib, a small bag filled with diapers and a bottle and some clothes. I should take it just in case we don't have much at the shelters. I grabbed some toys and stuck them in the bag, along with some more clothes, another blanket, and a picture frame. I want her to at least know who her parents were when she gets old enough.
I turned back to Tucker to see if he was ready to go, but he seemed way caught up in rocking the baby to sleep. He was smiling, a smile that I'd never seen him use before in my entire life. I guess everybody wants a kid now a days.
"You could adopt her," I stated awkwardly. "If, you know, Sonja would be cool with it."
He only shook his head, his smile faltering a bit. "I can't raise a kid. I can barely take care of myself. Anyway, let's get going. More mobs are coming this way and I don't wanna get caught in that." He pulled the blanket up further so that it was covering most of the baby's face, and then he began to walk out.
When we got back to the refugee camp, we found that most of the people who had lived in the village were evacuated and most of the parents found their children. Most. There were still some parents who were looking around for their children and some children looking around for their parents. Tomorrow we'll have to figure out the death count. I don't even want to know.
At the end of the day when most of the refugees were fed, clothed, and put into their designated homes, I went home. Home home, not the wizards compound or the inn room or a shelter house, the tree. Toms old tree. I wasn't supposed to go outside the gates of the camp, but I can't stand to be inside of it anymore. The weight of death is making my shoulders ache and my knees sore. Toms gonna be working all night guarding the camp so I'll be alone, but I don't care if I'm alone. I just want a good nights rest before I have to face tomorrow.
I pried open the wooden door of the tall looming tree with a crowbar from our shed, because I was completely out of energy and I just couldn't cast another spell today. I managed to get it open after two tries, the lock bursting apart from the force I applied to it. Walking in felt like a breath of fresh air. I was home. Not the home I want to be in, but a home that I feel a little safer in. Finally.
It was dark, but I lit a few candles we kept in the cabinets so I could see. The house looked just as it had when we left, but a bit dustier than I remembered and a lot colder. Our bedroom was messy from the attack that happened the last night we were here. The bunny blood wasn't there though. Someone must've cleaned it up.
I took off my jacket, backpack, and jeans before climbing in the bed and pulling the soft blankets over myself. When I got situated I pulled my backpack onto the bed and dug out Toms blanket that he made for me. I had left it when we went to Urulu, but when we got back to the wizards compound it was still in our bedroom, along with Franklin and Chester and Chip. I smiled at the memory of when we first opened the door to our new house and our pets came running to greet us. That was a good day. I wrapped Toms blanket and around my self and finally laid down.
And, for the first time in months, I felt at peace.
It was short lived. A huge creaking noise sounded throughout the room, effectively scaring the crap out of me and causing me to jump fifty feet in the air. The door cracked open and a head of purple hair popped out.
"Couldn't wait for me, huh?" Tom joked, smiling.
"I thought you were on guard duty all night?" I asked as he began stripping down his clothes, down to his T-shirt and underwear.
"I was, but they told me to go early and get some rest. Why didn't you tell me you were comin' here?" He slid into bed with me and we slipped into spooning position, me being the little spoon. Lately I've been the big spoon, but tonight I just want someone else to hold me. I'm tired of taking charge.
"Thought you were too busy."
"Never too busy for you."
"Mh."
"What?"
"Nothing."
"Doesn't sound like nothing. Why the long face?"
"It's nothing. Where's Rosie?"
"With Champ and Dec. Seriously, tell me what's wrong."
"Just drop it. I'm going to bed." I turned over so that I wasn't facing him and closed my eyes.
A hand carefully wrapped itself around my waist, pulling me closer to the warm body behind me. "You're sure it's nothing?"
It's a million things. I just can't explain them all to you.
I gave his hand a soft squeeze of reassurance. "It's nothing Tom."
"You'd think after all these years of being with me you'd pick up on my lying skills. You still suck at it."
"What if I don't want to talk about it? Ever thought about that?" I snapped at him.
"Then I'll just cuddle the truth out of you." He pressed a soft kiss to my neck, and began trailing down my collar bones and shoulders. I'm not gonna lie, it felt like heaven, but I didn't want to have sex with him right now. It didn't feel appropriate given that there were still a group of children at the camp who never got to say goodbye to their parents.
"I love you, but I really don't want any sexy time tonight, okay? I'm just not in the mood."
"I know. I just want to make you feel better. Am I helping at all?"
"A little." A lot. I tried not to shiver with pleasure at the sensation I was feeling through my neck, so I bit down on my lip and kept still.
"Tell me what's wrong Sparklez. Please? I hate seeing you miserable." He began drawing small shapes into my stomach with his thumb. "Is it because of the kids? You know at the end of the day, Martha only counted one that didn't have parents in the camp. She told me before I left so I could tell you. The wizards went back to the village to check for any more people and they found a few who were hiding in the forest around the place. They even found some more kids."
One? Just one?
"How old is the kid? The one left?"
"Not sure. It was a baby though, Martha was feeding her. If I had to guess it would be a few weeks old."
It had to be the baby Tucker and I found in the smashed up house. The little baby girl with green eyes, the one Tucker adored so much. Her parents were dead. I knew that. Somebody could adopt her if they wanted.
"Did you know Tucker wants kids?" I blurted out.
"Er, no not really. What's that got to do with anything?"
"Tucker rescued her, the baby without parents. I was with him. He liked her a lot, I could tell."
"Ah. So you think he might adopt her?"
"Maybe. I don't know. I mentioned something about it, but he said he could never raise a baby."
"Is that what's been bugging you? The kids and Tucker being a daddy?"
"Kinda. Do you think he will? Adopt the little girl?"
"Depends. What were his exact words when you mentioned something about adopting?"
"'I can't raise a kid. I can barely take care of myself'. I didn't really say anything else, he changed the subject pretty quickly."
Tom chuckled. "I've heard that one before. He's scared he'll end up like his old man. It's why he usually veers away from kids. Plus you gotta consider the fact that he killed a kid once and nearly died because of the guilt. That would pretty much mess up your entire decision of having kids."
"That's true. What does Sonja think of having kids?"
"She's never said much about it before. I dunno. She likes Rose pretty well, so maybe she does like them."
"I hope that baby finds a home..."
"We can always take care of another kid. Wonder what having a normal growing kid without any powers is like?" He grinned. I rolled my eyes at him.
"There's no way. Mr. World Historian would kill the baby before she even turns one. Can't have any more kids until we leave this place." Assuming that we do leave this place. The storms are getting worse and the wizards are exhausted from holding up force fields all day long to protect us. They're running out of mana and soon the force fields will be down again. Our fight with Botan is getting closer and closer each day, and I am not ready for it. I've trained for weeks now, but I still don't feel prepared. Prepared enough to fight the father of the gods anyway.
For the last two weeks, Mr. World Historian has been attacking villages surrounding Ruxomar. He's used earthquakes, tornados, tsunamis, and now volcanos. We knew it was him messing with the weather, but now I know he's doing other things too. He left those dead parents there for me. To remind me of Tiff and Lola, and how I failed to protect them. How Nicky is gonna grow up without his mothers raising him.
"Wag told me something the other day, something very important. I was gonna wait until this was all over, but now seems like a good time." I could feel him smiling into my neck, and I raised an eyebrow at his mysteriousness.
"He told you what?" I asked timidly.
"Told me he perfected the fertility potion. It works now, and instead of death being an almost inevitable side affect, there's just normal ones like nausea and headaches and that kind of stuff. So if you did want more kids..."
"We could have more?" I gasped. More babies. More little pitter patters of feet on the floor. More memories.
"Yup. Though the potion...it uh, does some odd things you might not like. But I think you'll be okay. "
"Odd things?" I questioned.
"You basically do the same thing that happens to a woman when she gets pregnant."
And then it hit me.
"...you mean I actually have to birth a baby?"
"Yeah...I think so." He made a sour face.
"Wh-...where would it even-"
"Don't question it, we'll solve that problem when we get to it. But just think about it, a little family in a house on a hill. That's what I dream of all the time and that's what I want for us. What do you dream of?"
Monsters. Villains. Insanity. Straight jackets. Blood. Grey hoods. Us, with our bodies mangled and our necks twisted sideways, while our child screams and cries for us to come back.
I shrugged. "The same, mostly."
There's a lot of dialogue in this because I was tired and detail is exhausting >.<
I really need to rewatch the seasons last few episodes because I feel like I'm leaving out a lot of stuff that happened before the super huge things happened. I also need to go back and rewrite a bunch of stuff because a lot of people were telling me that Akemi Botan was World Historians real name and now that one of the writers confirmed something totally different from that, I have to fix it. -.-
You know what would be awesome? If I had a cowriter that has watched and memorized every single episode of Mianite and I can completely trust this person not to delete all of my stuff when I work with them *nervous laugh and anime sweat drop* buuuut I'm really independent and selfish and I feel like that person would forever hate me when they realize how lazy I am so...I'll probably never get one xD
Okay Lee, enough bantering you're boring everyone to death. I was just gonna ask you guys if there are any important events that happened in the last few episodes that I should include before this books ends? I don't want to leave out anything and totally crush the Fangirl dreams, because trust me I know that feel. I was furious when they didn't include Finnick Odair in his underwear when they made the Mockingjay movies I WAS FURIOUS. But anyway, I hope you guys enjoyed the chapter! Leave a favorite or a comment if you did, tank yew!
