Chapter 20: Laws of the Immortal
Okay. So I didn't mean to sleep over at the wizards place, but I did. Tom and I couldn't find Sonja or Phil, so we just gave up and did our own thing. I spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying a tour around the small town surrounding the tower. And my tour guides were two very very attractive wizards, whom were very very very nice. When I say nice, I mean the two of them never left my side the whole time I was there and I couldn't go five minutes without blushing at something they said. I had to keep reminding myself that I had a husband. Who loved me very much. And would try to pick a fight with the wizards if he found out they'd been flirting with me. And he would definitely lose.
After touring the entire town, which wasn't really even a town because it had no one else living in it besides the wizards, I was exhausted. I could barely even stand I was so tired.
"Do you need us to carry you back?" Matt suggested. There was literally only an inch of space between us as we walked back to the tower. Tom was the same way.
"No...I just need to get back and..." I yawned, cutting off my own sentence. Was I staggering? I think I was. It was hard to open my eyes back up when I blinked them.
"We can let you stay in one of our bedrooms. We don't use them a lot. It would only be for a night and we can search for Sonja and Phil in the morning. You look very tired, Jordan." Tom chimed in. I just shook my head and tried to keep my eyes on the path in front of me. It was really difficult.
"No it's...I don't..." I fell for a second. An arm caught me just in time before I slammed into the concrete. Two arms to be exact. I didn't even try to fight sleep. I just let it take me.
I heard a voice chuckle. "Goodnight Jordan. Sweet dreams."
And then I was out like a light.
The next morning when I woke up, my communicator was ringing off the hook. I groggily sat up and tried to comprehend where I was and why my wrist was vibrating. I was in a very comfy bed in a large room that looked a lot like a small ballroom. There was white glass tiles covering the floor, white walls, stain glass windows, a huge chandelier made of gold. Is this a bedroom or a palace?
"Good morning. Did you sleep well?"
The voice startled me, mostly because it came from above me rather than beside me. I looked up to the ceiling, and blue eyes met gold ones. Matt. He was standing...on the ceiling. What?
"Uh, yeah. Whatcha doin up there?"
"Watching you sleep. Sorry. We haven't had any guests in a very long time. Tom usually scares them away. I haven't seen a human here in awhile. You all sleep so peacefully." He sounded fascinated. Why does everyone like to watch me sleep? Am I really that peaceful?
"It's cool...I guess."
I realized I should probably answer my communicator before it blew up from the ringing. I brought my wrist up to my eyes and read the name calling. Tom. Oh my god! I didn't call him or anything yesterday! He must be so worried...
"Um, can you leave for a second? I have to call someone. It's sorta personal."
"Good luck with that. The tower has barely any signal. I bought a cellphone recently, and I can never get the thing to work properly."
I pressed the answer button, and sure enough the call dropped immediately. Dang it. I have to get home. He's probably worried sick.
"Please tell me you know where Sonja is," I pleaded with him. "I don't know how to get home without her."
"Not a clue. My guess is she went off with Phil to go 'touch butts' or whatever she calls it. And Phil being Phil, would most likely take her somewhere hidden so we won't disturb them. I guess you're stuck here with Tom and I until they get back." He wiggled his eyebrows and smiled. Oh no. I can't stay here. I can't be alone with a bunch of sexy wizards who like to flirt with me. Either I will do something stupid or they will. I'm not waiting around to find out which one.
"Whose room is this? Is this even a bedroom?" It sure didn't look like it.
"Yes, it is a bedroom. Mine, but I never use it. I don't sleep. Too many things to do and places to be." He floated down from the ceiling and sat next to me on the huge king sized bed.
"Does Tom ever sleep?"
"Sometimes...although I think he only does it so he can dream. It's a delightful experience. Usually whenever I sleep I only receive nightmares." He frowned slightly. Nightmares about the war, I guess.
"Same. I actually slept well last night. It was nice." Maybe it had something to do with sleeping in a drama free environment where I wasn't fearing for my life all the time.
"I think humans tend to feel more safe near us. An adorable thing, really." He smiled cheekly.
"I don't get it."
"Get what?"
"Why are you flirting with me? Why is everyone so interested in me? I'm not special. I'm pale and weird and awkward. Who would even want that?"
"First of all, you are pale, but it's a very beautiful color against those blue eyes of yours. Second, you are a very funny and sensitive creature. And third, you are extremely attractive. Have you looked at yourself in the mirror lately? I am very surprised at how humble, unconfident, and caring you are despite your looks. Your partner is very lucky."
"...wow. Thanks...I guess."
"No problem. Would you like some food?"
"Yeah. That'd be great." I was starving. I hadn't eaten anything since yesterday morning.
Matt just snapped his fingers and a huge silver tray of breakfast appeared on my lap. But it wasn't the fact that it appeared out of thin air that scared me, it was the fact that it was my favorite breakfast. Guard Toms blue berry pie.
I looked at Matt in amazement. "How did you-?!"
"Magic!" He made a rainbow with his hands and laughed. I laughed too.
"It must be nice to have anything you want with just a snap of your fingers." I took the fork from the tray and began to dig into the pie.
"Not anything you want. We can't have friends. I think I speak for all of my brothers when I say we are very lonely people. We're not supposed to meddle with mortal lives, but sometimes we can't really help ourselves." He chuckled.
"But you have each other, right? Isn't that all you need?" I took the first bite of pie, and it tasted just like Guard Toms. It made me miss him even more. I wish I knew where he was so I could bring him home.
"It gets rather boring...just having two other people to talk to. We build cities and towns to distract ourselves, but we soon grow bored of them as well. We enjoy human company more than anything, really. Coming across Sonja was purely an accident. It was a happy accident though. Phil never stops talking about how much he likes her."
"Tell me about how you all met her. She never told me."
"Well, a few months ago we were having a bit of a problem. This...purple goo was taking over our land. It was toxic and it was killing our farm animals and pets. So naturally, we used magic to make it go away. But um...it didn't really go away. It moved on to another land. Dagrun. So of course Tom, being the whole justice bringer he is, wanted to help the residents of the town. Keep in mind that we hadn't really seen any humans in years and the last time we had, they freaked out and tried to kill us with fire...so when we saw Sonja and she saw us, we immediately panicked. Phil started heaving anvils at her so we did as well and she just kept shouting at us 'It's okay! It's okay! I'm cool!'." He paused to laugh at the memory.
"After a few minutes of getting to know her, every bad image of a human just left our minds. She even offered us cookies after we tried to squish her with anvils! Her sense of humor was hilarious and she was just so cool about everything...you don't even know how many times we got into arguments about who loved her more. Well...until we found out she was with someone. Poor Phil was heartbroken. He was head over heels in love with her. Yesterday must have been the happiest day of his life."
I felt guilt then. I only wanted Sonja to go out with Phil so she'd realize how much she loved Tucker. If she left Phil he'd be heartbroken again.
"I hope they come back soon...I really want to go home." I missed my Tom. And Ianita.
I watched his shoulders slump and his smile fade. "I'm sorry. Tom says I am terrible company."
You hurt his feelings, you idiot.
No please god I can't take you right now.
"No! No I didn't mean you aren't good company, I just really miss my husband and my daughter. They're really worried about me."
Or maybe they're just annoyed at how stupid you are.
Matt nodded kindly. "I understand. If they don't come back soon, I'll just escort you home."
No! My husband will kill you! He's too jealous for his own good!
"No no, I'll just wait until they get back. I'm sure they'll be back soon...I hope."
"So...do you mind telling me what it's like?" He asked with a hint of sadness in his tone.
"What do you mean?"
"Having a family. What it's like having loved ones. Is it nice?"
He wants what you have. He wants love.
"Y-yeah."
There was a long awkward silence for a few minutes. I didn't really know what to say to him.
"I don't think I could ever have a family. I'm not very responsible. I had a goldfish once...Phil had to flush it..."
We both laughed.
"I'm sorry about your goldfish."
He only shrugged. "I didn't really know him that well anyway."
More silence followed. I was trying to finish the huge pie in front of me, but something told me wouldn't be able to. Matt just stared at me while I ate. It was kinda weird. Were humans really that fascinating to wizards? So fascinating that he liked to watch me eat?
"I don't mean to be rude, but um...can you maybe stop staring at me?"
"Oh! Sorry..." He smiled sheepishly.
"Where's Tom? Is he sleeping?" I sort of preferred talking to him over Matt. He didn't stare at me as much.
"He's busy acting weird. He hasn't stopped staring at that glass since you mentioned it. I don't see what hes so worried about. Botans not coming back anytime soon." He absent-midedly levitated a pillow from the bed and twirled it in circles.
"Who's Botan? He sounds Japanese."
He laughed at my observation. "He is not Japanese nor Chinese. I don't know what he is really. They say he was the father of the three gods but...there was a lot of rumors floating around at the time I heard that. Tom knows more about him than I do, but he wont say much about him. All I really know is that he was a pretty bad guy and everyone refuses to say his name. I think it's silly."
I nearly choked on my pie. "The father of the gods?! What?!"
"It may be just a rumor. I wouldn't talk about it when Tom is around. He gets upset."
I guess that was a signal to drop the topic. "You guys care a lot about each other huh?"
"They are all I have left. I don't think I could ever stop loving them." He glanced over at a picture frame on the desk next to the bed. It showed the three of them standing in the middle of the town, smiling and waving at the camera with arms slung across one another. You could tell just by looking at the photo how much they cared about each other. And you could tell by the look in Matt's eyes that he loved his brothers more than anything else.
I'm really starting to like Matt.
~
"Well, we've searched the entire town, the tower twice, and the underground basements three times. Phil and Sonja are officially missing," Tom announced.
I let out a frustrated sigh. If I cant find Sonja, then I cant get home. Why would she even go off somewhere with Phil? And without telling me?
"Should we use a spell to track him?" Matt suggested. "That would be fairly easy."
Tom shook his head. "No no, we all made a promise not to ever do that again after the last time."
"What happened last time?" I asked.
"We ended up teleporting into Phil's shower. It wasn't pleasant..." Tom made a face of disgust.
"This time is different. Just this once can we? Jordan doesn't know of the way back and he wants only Sonja to take him."
"Can't you stay with us another day? I'm sure it wont kill you." Tom inquired.
"He misses his family Tom. He has a husband and a daughter. Please?" Matt begged.
Tom let out a sigh and nodded. "Fine, but I do hope we don't teleport into his bathroom again..." He snapped his fingers, and I barely had time to prepare myself before I was poofed somewhere else. For awhile, it was just a bunch of colors flashing in front of my eyes and I felt like I was falling. It made me feel sick.
Finally, the colors stopped and I was brought back to the real world.
The picture awaiting me...was very very odd.
It was Phil. He was curled up in a bed with the sheets pulled up over his head, but I could see his curly brown hair sticking out from it. He sounded like...he was crying? No, he couldn't be. He was happy yesterday. What happened?
"Philly? Everything alright?" I heard a voice beside me ask. Matt was the one who asked. He approached the bed and sat down spat the end, awaiting Phil's answer.
"I'm fine...really I'm fine..." He could barely choke out the words.
"No you're not. Tell us what's wrong. Where is Sonja? Why are you hiding?" Tom went over to the bed next. He put a comforting hand on Phil's back.
"She...Tucker found out where she was...and that she was on a date with me..."
"And?" Matt pressed on.
And finally, like an unstable dam of emotions, he broke. "I-I couldn't do anything! I didn't want to hurt him and I knew she'd get angry with me if I tried to fight back! I laid there like a wimp and took it...she didn't even try to stop him..." He sobbed pitifully. I wanted to hug him. He sounded so helpless and torn apart.
"Calm down and tell us everything. Right from the beginning." Tom patted softly on his back, which made him relax a little.
"We went on a date to the bar...she kept texting someone and she would never tell me who...he came out of no where Matt! NO WHERE! He tossed me around like I was a sack of potatoes and I let him...she just watched me get beaten to death...I hate love Matt. I don't want it any longer! It hurts so much!" He grabbed Matt by the shoulders and hugged him so tightly his face began to redden.
"I finally got up and ran! I have killed thousands of people all over this earth and I have battled with the gods, but I can not even take a beating from an ex-boyfriend! I am no wizard! I am a coward!" His body started to shake violently from his crying. I wanted to hug him. How could Tucker do this? Phil was too precious to be beaten up. Too innocent.
"Philly, let us see your face. We need to see what the damage is." Tom tried to pull off the covers, but Phil refused. He stood glued to his mattress.
"I don't want you to look at me...I am ashamed of myself..."
"Philly...please? We just want to be sure that you are okay. You don't need to be ashamed. You did the right thing." Matt rubbed small circles into the boys back, providing some comfort for poor Phil.
"He broke my nose..." He admitted sadly.
"Phil show us. We need to fix it." Tom tried to sound stern. He must be the oldest of the three brothers since he's a lot more mature.
The coveted shifted only a little, and we could finally see his face. He did have a broken nose. And about a dozen bruises all over his face. His lip was busted and still bleeding and I could see the outline of black surrounding his left eye. I felt so much guilt. Why did I suggest that stuff to Sonja? Phil would be absolutely fine if I hadn't.
Matt immediately tried to cheer him up. "It's not that bad. It makes you look more manly!"
"We might need to do something about that nose though," Tom suggested. "It's rather twisted."
Without any warning at all, Tom grabbed ahold of Phils nose and twisted it back into place, producing a very large and spine chilling crunching noise.
"AHHHH!" Phil screamed and shoved Tom, sending him flying across the room and into the wall.
"WHY THE HELL DID YOU DO THAT?!" Tom yelled at him.
"BECAUSE YOU BLOODY BROKE MY NOSE AGAIN YOU WANKER!" Phil shouted back with equal anger. I just stood frozen beside of Matt and watched them argue. He didn't really seem to know what to do either, so I assumed they didn't fight often.
"I WAS FIXING IT YOU UNGRATEFUL SWINE!"
"YOU COULD HAVE GIVEN ME A WARNING BEFORE TEARING IT OFF!"
"THEN YOU WOULDN'T HAVE LET ME DONE IT!"
"Yeah because it hurts! It hurts so much more than it did before..." He crawled back under his covers and began to cry again.
Tom looked really guilty then. He say back down on the bed and sighed.
"I apologize. You know I only try to do what's best for you and for Matt. Would you like me to smite Tucker?"
"No...she loves him. All I want is for her to be happy...I just wish I knew why she did nothing to stop him from beating me...I thought we were at least friends. Perhaps I was just fooling myself..."
"I'm going to talk to the both of them." Matt announced.
"Matt no. Remember the laws. No meddling. We should have escorted the mortals out when they first arrived. Now look where we're at." Tom shook his head in frustration. I felt even worse then. He was referring to me. And he was right.
"Don't talk about them like they are some sort of poison. Jordan is a kind person. I'm glad he's here. We haven't a soul in this place in a century. I for one am tired of hiding in this prison, acting like the world is a plague! I'm tired of living like this! I don't wanna be here anymore!"
I was surprised Matt was raising his voice at Tom. That's like a small wolf standing up to the pack leader.
"You have to be here. We must follow the laws. Do you want another war? Do you want to see him die because of us?" Tom pointed a finger at me. I just swallowed hard and tried to make myself as small as I could. I didn't want them to argue. They loved each other.
"He isn't going to die! That was different and you know it! We aren't what we used to be, we aren't the fallen brothers!"
"We. Have. Laws." You could hear Tom gritting his teeth. He's getting angry.
"Those laws were made thirty-five hundred years ago. When we wrote them there were hundreds of us. Now it's down to three. The people who made them didn't know in future there was only to be three left. They didn't know how lonely it would be."
"The laws keep the earth safe. We don't break them. Ever. You can either escort the human out of the town or I will personally do it. Your choice, but he is not staying here any longer." His decision sounded final, and I knew I wouldn't be able to stay. I'd have to go back home and I would never see Matt or Phil or Tom ever again. The thought alone made me depressed.
"But that's not fair!" Matt tried to argue, but I cut him off.
"It's okay. I'll just leave. I'm sure I'll be able to find home somehow."
Somehow...I didn't know how.
Matt looked like he was fighting an internal battle with himself. He'd look to his two brothers, and then he'd look at me, each time looking more and more hopelessly lost. What was he thinking about?
"You know what? No. I love you and I'll always love you brother, but I refuse to listen to your stupid laws any longer. I want love and friends and a happy life. I can't be happy if I stay here another minute. I'm going with Jordan back to Dagrun." He crossed his arms in front of him.
"If you leave with him, then don't you dare ever come back." Was all Tom said.
"Fine." Matt turned away and grabbed my wrist, snapping his fingers.
