Chapter 8: The One Where Things Take An Odd Turn

Now I can see that you might be a little bit confused about what just happened. It all happened very quickly, but these things do tend to happen a little too quickly for them to make much sense in the moment. Dave and Jeff having finished watching 'The Adventures of Quack-quack: Christmas With Quack-quack The Movie' had released that their ship is running low on power and thus has stopped projecting the cloaking technology that was keeping their true forms hidden. Looking at each other, in the room's mirror, and back at each other they knew that they weren't going to be able to hide for very long. It was at this point when they decided that it might just be time to begin their takeover.

"Hey, Dave, look at this.' Jeff said having pulled out a small handbook from the emergency kit they had brought with them off the ship. It read 'How To Takeover The World...or at least some other smaller world'. "I think it might help us."

"Let me see that...yes, I think this could work." Dave says after flicking through a few pages. Noticing that there were a few pages missing as well, but that didn't make much difference to them. Less than twenty minutes later they're standing on the balcony looking down at the Earthlings.

The rest you sort of have an idea about. So you see not actually knowing what they're doing. Jeff is following Dave, who's only following bits and pieces from the book, trying to do the only thing they think they should know how to do; become the sole rulers of another world. So they set off using the book as more of a vague outline of what to do. After dividing everyone into two groups they decided to maybe choose one human to help them out. To be honest they hadn't thought they'd get this far. Just between us, they're a little out of their depth. They have no idea what they're doing, or even the slightest idea what to do next. Dave, and Jeff, were never very good at paying attention in school. The fact that they had graduated was a surprise to a lot of people, themselves included. After they had finished school they jumped into Jeff's ship and set off. That was about five or maybe seven months ago. They don't have any clue what to do, the book is hardly any help to someone who doesn't like to read, and they are now struck by an awkward sense of what-are-we-going-to-do-next. Thus their epicly genius idea to ask their new subservient Earthlings what they should be doing next.

As fate, or whatever you want to call it, would have it when picking their human they just happened to choose James. They then took him into the room they booked. This dear Reader is where we pick up the trail of our story.

"Well, just sit there." Dave points to a chair off to the side of the room. James still in quite a bit of shock does as he's told. Somewhere between entering the room and sitting down, after taking it's sweet time, his military training kicks in, his mind turning back on.

"What are you planning to do now?" He tests the water.

Jeff whispers something to Dave. Dave's face betraying him seems worried as he whispers something back to Jeff. They nod and then turn back to James. Jeff is the first to speak, "We have decided to trust you."

"Really?" This surprises James, and you can't really blame the poor boy. Being aliens on this world Dave and Jeff however aren't used to human dialogue, and they overlook his shocked tone. Now I know what you're thinking. But they're speaking English now. Well yes and no. It only sounds like English to you because you speak English. Instead it's only the effect of their super cool inter-galactic translator doohickey using some or other form of technology that's too complex for you to understand so I won't bore you with the science.

"Yes, we have chosen to trust you." Dave continues, "And because of this we're going to level with you. We need your help."

James being hesitant, as one is when this happens, "Well..."

Jeff now steps closer to James and drops to the floor begging, "Please we need you to help us. We don't know what we're doing. Help us, Human."

"Let me just get this right; you've taken over this lodge. You're holding us hostage in here, and now you're not sure what you're doing? And you need my help to tell what you should do next?"

"Yes."

Their response leads James to what is possibly a very dangerous train of thought. If they don't know what they should be doing...then they don't know what they shouldn't be doing. They'll do whatever he tells them to do. Maybe. Probably, and if they do then maybe he can get rid of them before they do any serious damage.

Dave forces his thought train to a sudden halt, like hitting a brick wall at high speed. "So will you help us?"

"Sure." He smiles pleased with the crazy plan forming in his head. He starts to explain a few basic human 'facts' to them. After all they did choose to trust him, and he has every intention of using this against them. Wouldn't you? After all they are the antagonists in our story, even if they aren't the brightest antagonists.

Meanwhile downstairs:
Mia is sitting with the two teens dressed as elves from the holiday club. They've managed to get all the children who are there, and just for the record there's thirteen, no there goes another one, four..fifteen, wait already counted you, no there's definitely only fourteen children around, to settle down. Oh I spoke to soon, little Jimmy just decided to run laps around all the other children. Well they've done their best. There are also three teens who are sitting on their own. To cool to be seen so close to anyone at least a year younger. Jimmy running around sets off the rest of the little ones and anyone who didn't know better would think they were starting a riot. This is too much for Mia, and acting like any rational person if a rational person was stuck with fourteen small people and three moody teens, she stands up and walks to the center of the room.

"Quiet!" Being a person with a lot of bottled up emotion, a short fuse, and a tendency to know when to shout, Mia brings the chaos around her to a halt with a loader than intended shout. It's too late to take it back so she just carries on, "Everyone, and that includes you three over there, come here. Sit down."

The whole situation would be very funny to an outsider seeing this short little woman standing in the middle of a widening circle of children. All sitting down as she commanded. Even the elf girls find themselves sitting down on the floor in front of her.

A little shocked that it actually worked, Mia quickly hides her surprise. She knows you cannot show weakness around children. They'll try to eat you alive, and that's not some over exaggerated phrase. Long ago when the world was still finding itself little children would often eat their weaker teachers, or at least that's what I was told. Some primitive part of her brain, hidden deep in her, believes this as well, so she continues. There was something that brought up memory from long ago. Something her Mom would tell her when she was little and restless around this time of year, "Alright then, we're all going to sit here, and we're going to have a story.

"Once upon a Christmas there was a princess, a polar bear, and three blind mice..."
