Chapter 6: The One You (Probably) Didn't See Coming
Now, now, I know what you're thinking. You think you understand what's happening. Our two characters seem to be hitting it off. They're now trapped inside a beautifully decorated Christmassy lodge together. They're going to have to fall in love now. It's a Christmas love story. No. No, this is real life and as we all know it doesn't work like that. It never...okay it almost never works like that. Just, don't get your hopes up. That's all I'm saying, you don't know what could happen next. Speaking of which, where was I now? Oh, yes right here.
Standing off to the side of the room are two people. They look to be dressed, wrong isn't the right word, not warm comes to mind. Still not exactly the right way to say it. They look like they should be in a slightly warmer place. They also just so happen to be arguing. "This is all your fault you know!"
"My fault? I'm sorry but how exactly is this my fault?!"
"Hmm let me think for a second. Oh, yes that's right! 'Look at the blue and green planet. Look how fun it is. Let's go there.' Your words, not mine. And who was it again that said; 'Look at those puffy white things. Let's see what they are!' ?" The first voice sounding all together not happy continues to lay it on. "You're the one who then proceeded to bump our ship into them over and over and over again. And the more I asked you to stop, the more you did. You made them angry and now we're stuck here! How are we going to take over a planet when the first thing you do is make the puffy white things angry?"
The second voice feeling very sorry for itself now decides to argue back. "Angry? It can't be angry. It isn't alive!"
"We don't know that. Why else would it have dropped this cold wet but not liquid stuff all over the place trapping us in here. It knows what we're up to. We're going to fail, and it's only the first planet we've tried to invade." The first voice wines.
"I'm sorry Dave." The second voice comforts. "You're right. It is my fault."
Dave sniffs, "Well that's all you needed to say. Besides you're terrible driver Jeff, if you hadn't crashed the ship last night after messing around in the fluffy white things we wouldn't be stuck here right now."
"Well I wouldn't have crashed the ship if you hadn't been shouting at me to stop playing with the fluffy white things." Jeff sulks.
Well, there you have it readers. Just two alien dudes, traveling in a spaceship, trying to conquer the universe together, sitting five feet apart though cause they're not gay. That's right, Aliens yes, because what story is truly complete without them. Yes, I am aware of the thousands of other books out there which never mention them but come on, please for the purpose of this story could you maybe, play along. As you can see it wasn't fate, or destiny, or any of that that trapped them in here. No, it was aliens, and just between you and me not the brightest aliens either. I mean just look at them. They're a little lopsided looking because most of their cloaking device is focused on hiding their ship. As it just so happens their ship is outside, poorly disguised as a wooden shed. Yes, that wooden shed. Oh blast it, I knew there was something earlier I was overlooking. Alright turns out the shed is important after all. What I bet you haven't noticed though, and what the Aliens haven't noticed either is that three children have been hovering at the outskirt of their conversation. Three children now happen to have important information. Information that may yet change the course of the story.
They stay quiet for a moment too long before Jeff speaks again, "Dave, what do we do now?"
"Well you see Jeff...I don't know."
"Ah, that. Okay, we can do that."
"Jeff, I didn't say anything. Nothing I just said relates to something we can or will do. I literally just said that I don't know what we are going to do."
"I know, see I was just thinking."
"Hold up. We both know thinking is dangerous." Dave sounds genuinely concerned at this.
"Yes, I know, but it was only a little thought. I was thinking that maybe, since we're stuck here we could have some practice at conquering and taking over things. We'll start small, you know. Then when we get out of here we'll be ready to just take over the rest of this world."
"...You know what? That isn't the worst plan." Dave gives off a funny looking smile, "A little bit of practice, a chance to see what the locales are like. I like it. Jeff?"
Jeff, feeling very proud of himself beams, "Yes, Dave?"
"I know what we're going to do tonight?"
"Oh, cool cause you see I was thinking maybe we could have movie night. I can teleport back into the ship, pick up some snacks. We could see that new martian movie." Dave's face stopped Jeff right in his tracks.
"Jeff...we're not having a movie night."
"Awe but Dave, we haven't had a movie night in ages. It'd be so much fun."
"No. We don't have time for fun, we have work to do." Dave then proceeded to walk off towards the room they got talked into booking by the lady at the front desk. It seemed to be what everyone else was doing, and everyone else seemed to know what was going on. Dave went into the nice two bed room and took out a small fancy looking piece of tech. It then opened up into what looks like a note and drawing pad hologram thingy that was projected onto the wall. He begins to take down notes while Jeff plays with the TV remote. Jeff presses a few buttons but nothing happens. He tries a few more. The TV in the room turns on. The previous occupants of the room having had a child with them had left it on some or other cartoon channel.
Jeff stares at the small people running around the screen. They seemed to be going somewhere on some sort of mission. One of them stops and asks if Jeff can help it. Jeff nodes and then points to the red circular looking thing in the tree. It was just like the little person had described. It doesn't seem to see it and asks again. Once again Jeff points to the red thing in the tree. The person only then seems to notice it. It thanks Jeff and carries on. A few moments later it asks for Jeff's help with something again, and so the process repeats. This soon distracts Dave as well. They both stare into the TV helping the little person by pointing out things they can see, but for some reason the little person can't.
"Dave, shouldn't we be plotting?" Jeff asks after a moment of dangerous thought.
"Jeff, now is certainly not the time. We're busy helping Quack-quack get ready for the party for Bunny." Dave now fully committed to helping the duck in the children's program doesn't release that these characters aren't real and that they can't hear him. He quickly apologizes to Quack-quack. He then continues to watch and point out things answering simple questions. Jeff sits and occasionally helps too, but he can't seem to shake the feeling that the duck already knows the answers and is just testing him. Well he'd be damned if some duck, whatever a duck is, best him. So for the next hour they sit and help while 'The Adventures of Quack-quack: Christmas With Quack-quack The Movie' playes out.
