Penumbra Butterfly was born in a tumultuous dark age as the eldest daughter of Queen Astrid the Influential and King Elias. Her appearance—dirt blonde hair, lime green eyes, and eight-pointed dark green stars on her cheeks—made her an intriguing figure in Mewni. Despite the ongoing struggles in the kingdom, she had a natural charisma that captivated those around her. But things never go as expected, now do they?
Growing up, Penumbra was less interested in fulfilling the duties of a ruler and more focused on building an image for herself. She wanted to be admired for her magical prowess often pushing herself to master spells that impressed the court and enchanted her subjects. Her magic was undeniably strong, but her efforts were more about showing off her power than governing wisely or compassionately.
Penumbra often belittled her sister, seeing her as a lesser royal—someone who would never pose a threat to her position. Gracie had inherited her grandmother Freya's silver hair and their mother's blue eyes was the quiet unassuming type. She had white checkmarks on her cheeks, a more subtle mark compared to Penumbra's dark green stars. Gracie had always been overshadowed by her older sister Penumbra. While Penumbra enjoyed the adoration and attention of the court Gracie was often overlooked and dismissed as the "less important" child.
It was clear from an early age that Gracie wouldn't inherit the throne or the wand and this relegated her to the background both within the royal family and in the eyes of the people. Even her own parents, despite their love for her, couldn't help but place all their focus on Penumbra as the heir to the kingdom. This constant neglect left Gracie feeling invisible, unimportant, and unworthy. She found solace in quiet corners watching Penumbra take center stage while she herself faded into the background.
When she received the wand at age 14 Penumbra was already heavily aware of her importance. The weight of her future as the heir to the throne loomed over her, but it didn't exactly inspire maturity or responsibility. Instead, she found herself focused on projecting an image of strength, power and control. Penumbra was determined to be seen as a formidable figure, someone to be admired even if she didn't yet fully grasp what it meant to be a good queen.
Her days were spent attending royal lessons and training with her magic. The kingdom's elders frequently reminded her of the gravity of her position, but all Penumbra truly cared about was the image of herself as a ruler—the perfect figure, constantly building her reputation in the eyes of others. She wanted to be remembered for her strength, for her prowess in magic and her will to shape the kingdom regardless of the consequences.
Astrid eventually abdicated the throne and Penumbra stepped up with her newlywed husband Oberon Blackbird. She gave birth to her daughter Raven Butterfly (a girl of black hair with maroon streaks, violet eyes, and maroon feathers on her cheeks) at age 32. Penumbra died on her husband's death anniversary from a heat stroke. She is buried in the Royal Crypts.
