Odette, daughter of Umbra the Malevolent and King Cedric, was born into a world of magic and complexity. Growing up in the shadow of her mother's dark magic and her father's noble lineage, Odette embodied a unique blend of both light and dark. However, the burden of her mother's reputation cast a long shadow over Odette. People saw her not just as a princess but as the offspring of an "evil" queen. She grew up in isolation, sheltered within the dark walls of her family's castle largely cut off from the outside world to protect her from the judgment of others.
Most children in Mewni were either too frightened to befriend her or forbidden by their families. The other royal families of Mewni kept their distance, and Odette was devoid of playmates. The castle staff however treated her with kindness. Odette's childhoos was a time of deep reflection. She became introspective, often retreating into herself during the day.
From a young age, Odette exhibited a remarkable affinity for magic, a talent inherited from her mother. However, her childhood took a fateful turn one fateful night when she stumbled upon Umbra practicing a particularly potent dark spell in the depths of their castle. Startled by her daughter's sudden appearance, Umbra accidentally unleashed a curse meant for a different purpose. This spell transformed Odette into a swan every nightfall.
For Odette the curse became both a physical and emotional burden. By day she was a princess studying magic, diplomacy, and courtly duties under the watchful eyes of her parents. But at night she transformed into a swan, her wings carrying her over the lakes and forests surrounding the castle. While her parents worked tirelessly to reverse the curse Odette learned to accept her new reality.
As Odette grew older, the curse affected her social standing. Other royal families were hesitant to associate with her fearing that her curse could bring misfortune or that she might inherit her mother's malevolent tendencies. Invitations to royal events dwindled and potential suitors avoided her (they didn't want to risk having cursed children). In an effort to maintain some semblance of normalcy, Odette withdrew from public life, spending most of her time in the solitude of her castle tending to her swan form during the nights.
During these years Odette grew closer to her father Sir Cedric, who had always approached her with empathy and understanding. Though Umbra loved her daughter, she was often emotionally distant as she was struggling to express her remorse for what had happened (though Odette forgave her and understood it was an accident). Because of Umbra's attack on the underworld, the relationship between the Butterflies and the Luictors was bad.
In an attempt to ease the tensions (and prevent another conflict) King Cedric promised that his wife would leave them alone if they participated in an arranged marriage with his (then 7 year old) daughter Odette. As expected, the initial reception was cold. The Lucitors had not forgotten Umbra's betrayal, and many in their court questioned Cedric's motives. Some even viewed the marriage proposal as a thinly veiled attempt to consolidate power in Mewni's favor.
King Azrael agreed to meet Cedric out of respect for their shared history. Once long ago, the Butterflies and the Luictors had stood as allies against various threats and while Tom had been furious at Umbra's actions, he also recognized that holding onto a grudge would not benefit his family in the long run. The Underworld was in need of alliances and Cedric's offer came at a time when stability was more important than revenge. He then offered his eldest son (then ages 10) Prince Thorneus as a candidate.
When they first met, the two children held disdain for each other. Thorneus saw her as a pest and Odette saw him as an immature person. The two were reunited years later when Prince Thorneus returned to Butterfly castle to discuss wedding preparations. At the age of 18, Odette was heartbroken by the corrupted death of her mother, who's body and heart were clogged with dark magic. The funeral was a closed casket due to the nasty effects the dark magic had on Queen Umbra's body. King Cedric cried for weeks and never remarried. He later committed suicide by hanging and the two lovers were reunited in the afterlife once more.
Odette rose to the throne with her fiance Thorneus and together they had a daughter named Bridgette. Odette died from unknown circumstances at age 61.
