chapter 6: A failed Attempt

A couple of weeks later, it was the night before his surgery, he was skeptical at first. The thought of a life-saving procedure seemed so unreal to him. But he was willing to try anything. While he was accepting and fearful of his circumstances, his friends were on the brink of tears. They wouldn't show up before him but on their own, they wept in secret. Mei-Zuo, Xi-Men, and Ah-Si met at Ah-Si's place to air their concerns and fears away from Lei.

"This is a tough choice," Xi-Men began as he took a sip of his beer; "on one end, the surgery could save him; but the other hand its life-threatening."

"That maybe so, but its worth a shot." Mei-Zuo replied looking at his two friends.

"Come on guys, we have to have faith." Ah-Si said looking at them.

"Yeah, but that doesn't stop us from worrying." Xi-Men replied.

"Do you think I'm not worried?!" Ah-Si replied getting angry and slamming his fists against the table; "we would probably loose one of our dearest friends, but it's the only chance we'll have!"

"Calm down dude, he's a fighter he'll make it." Mei-Zuo replied trying to calm his friend down.

"It's not that I don't have faith or I don't believe he'll make it," Ah-Si began before going over to the sink before continuing, "I'm just worried, that we might just loose our buddy." he replied and he started sobbing. "We can't loose him. We just can't."
While his friends weren't so far away, Lei was fearing for his life. He and Shancai was sitting in his living room. She seemed to worried and a weakened Lei tried to comfort her. But it was hard to do that, when he couldn't even comfort himself. He was getting cold feet about this whole thing.

"Lei, what of something happens?" Shancai began before sobbing as he looked at her with concerned eyes

"I've already lost Dao Ming Si once to amnesia (a/n yes from season 2)," She continued, "I can't bare to loose you permantly."

"Everything is up in the air right now, but we have to have faith. I can't be shaken by something like this." He began trying to calm her down. "If it works, that's great. If it doesnt, we tried. That's all we can hope for."

"I pray it works, I hate seeing you in the bed all the time." she replied looking at him.

"I know its a waste of my time;" he replied as he went closer to her and took her hand into his for comfort, "but it's where I belong right now."

He suddenly became overwhelmed by fatigue. He needed to lay down and rest. She helped him back to his bed and sat there patiently as he went to sleep. She knew that the next day would have troubles for him. He needed all the rest he could get.

"I hope you get better soon Lei," she thought as she watched him sleep and grabbed his hand and stroked it gently with her thumb, "I can't bare to loose my protector and friend."

Finally the day came the next morning. He had to wake up early and get ready for his pre-operation meeting with his doctor. He was afraid when everything was explained. It wasn't long until the surgery started. He wanted this to work.

But as time dragged on, the operation was completed. He was wheeled into the recovery room. He was scared that it had no success. After waking up and having a quick glance at his friends,

the look on their faces told him what he was scared of the most. It didn't work.

"What happened?" He asked looking at them.

"Lei, it didn't work. I'm sorry." Shancai replied sobbing looking at him.

"Well, it was a good chance on that anyways. We tried." he replied tired.

"I know we tried." Xi-Men replied looking at him; "I just want to see you get better dude."

"Well if all else fails, we just keep trying. There has to be something different we haven't tried." Lei replied looking at his friends, "I will get better, I will be myself again. I promise."

"Well at least you're alive at the moment." Mei-Zuo replied wiping some tears he had dripping off his face; "that will give us time, to spend with you."

"I know," Lei replied sighing, "and don't worry, I won't be going anywhere, anytime soon."

The sugery was a bust. He didn't get any benefit from it. He returned home a few days later in more pain then he started. His friends were regretting everything. But he wasn't.

"Lei in sorry." Xi-Men replied looking at his friend, "I wanted it to work out for you."

"It's alright, I've been telling you that for the past two days Xi-Men." Lei replied looking at his friend.

"He's right." Mei-Zuo agreed looking at him. "No one blames you Xi-Men. None of us could of guessed it wasn't gonna work."

"Yeah you were just being a good friend," Ah-Si replied, "There's nothing wrong with that."

"Come on guys," Lei began, "we're giving up to easily, don't you think?"

"Lei how can you be so calm?" Ah-Si asked looking at him.

'"It's very simple," Lei began; "I went into it with nothing to loose, and I've gained nothing, so I'm not scared."

"Lei, you always seemed so relaxed," Xi-Men began looking at his friend; "to be honest, it's scary sometimes."

"Yeah, it's almost like you aren't the one that's sick here." Mei-Zuo replied looking at him.

"No I've just resolved to live my life to the fullest while in still here." Lei replied looking at them.

"That was actually very inspirational Lei." Ah-Si replied giving his buddy a small smile.

"Thank you guys," Lei replied looking at them; "I've made it. Thanks for everything."

"There's nothing to thank is for Lei," Mei-Zuo stated, "we're your friends."

"Not just that Lei, you're our brother." Xi-Men replied. Lei suddenly doubled over. He was in a great amount of pain.

He grabbed his stomach and began to wince.

With a grimace look on his face.

"Are you ok Lei?" Mei-Zuo asked his buddy.

"No not at all." He replied looking at him.

"Do you need a doctor?" Xi-Men ask

"No not a doctor," Lei spat out as the pains were getting worse. "Can someone go get my painkillers please?"

"I'll go get them " Ah-Si replied getting up and leaving the room

"You know when I broke my leg when I was eight?" Mei-Zuo asked looking at his friend trying to help him relax; "do you remember when that happened Lei?"

"Yeah I remember." Lei began; "what about it?"

"I know how much pain you might be in." Mei-Zuo stated trying to make his friend feel better. Ah-Si came back in carrying the painkillers. He handed them to Lei who was more them happy to receive them. As they took the fact that the painkillers seemed to ease off his pain, he seemed at least for the moment content. Maybe he wouldn't have to suffer.

"How are you feeling Lei?" he asked.

"It's easing off, thanks Ah-Si." Lei replied looking at him.

"Do you need anything else?" Ah-Si asked his friend.

"No thanks. I should be fine now." Lei replied. Later that night Ah-Si took time to think. He couldn't stand to see Lei go though this anymore. He wanted to at least give it one last shot to find an operation that could help him. The next day he asked Mei-Zuo and Xi-Men to began their search again. This time they wouldn't stop until they have found something. While the others were at work pursuing the goal of helping him, Lei was at home overwhelmed by a fever. Fortunately Shancai stayed with him so he wouldn't have to suffer alone. She felt his forehead noticing that he was burning up. He wouldn't last long.

"Lei you're burning up." she replied looking at him.

"I know," he began as he looked at her "and I feel like my stomach is boiling."

"I'll go get your medicine." she replied as she began to get up but he grabbed her gently.

"Alright but I also feel faint." he replied as she looked at him

"We better get you into bed then." she replied as she helped him up. Quickly she got him into bed. However the pain had different ideas, suddenly the hand that was under the covers went to his stomach and the pain increased to a level that was not seen before with him. She was forced to watch him in agony. All she wanted him is to find relief. It was hard for a tear not to escape her eyes by watching this happening to him.

"I can't stand to see you like this Lei." she said looking at him with a worried expression.

"I can't stand this pain much longer." He replied as the pain got worse.

"It's alright, I'll stay with you no matter whatkkind of pain you're in," she began as she sat down. "And I'm gonna try and help you."

"Can you please get my painkillers?" he asked.
Shancai saw to his every need. Suddenly her phone rang as Lei was asleep. It was Ah-Si. Upon hearing his voice, her face lit up. she looked at a sleeping Lei with hopeful eyes. Maybe they found another solution.

"So you guys found something?" she asked hoping in her mind that they did.

"Yes we did " He replied.

"I hope it's not like last time." she said with a worried tone in her voice.

"It's not. It's a completely different surgery." he began and then closed his laptop and say back in his chair, he wanted to know how Lei was doing; "How is Lei doing?"

"He's asleep;" she began and sat in the chair next to Lei's bed and stroked his hair as he slept

"He's been in pain the whole day." she replied.

"Good let him rest. We'll be there soon." Ah-Si replied. A few hours later, they all met at Lei's house. He was now wide awake, but still in a great amount of pain, but he has just took his painkillers. He wanted to know what his friends found this time. He was desperate to know if a new this new option could save his life. At this time, he was frightened. This was maybe his last shot.

"So what do you have for me this time?" Lei asked as the pain was fading.

"It's a completely new procedure, it's a liver transplant." Ah-Si replied looking at his friend who was lying in his bed.

"Wait a minute," Shancai began as she heard this; "doesn't a transplant require a donor, a waiting list, and time he clearly doesn't have?"

"A donor yes, a waiting list, I really didn't think of that." Ah-Si replied looking at her as she just made a good point.

"How are we gonna find a donor on such short notice though?" Mei-Zuo asked as they all began to think.

"We won't have to." Xi-Men spoke up as everyone looked at him, "I'll do it. I'll be Lei's donor."

(A/N ooh Xi-Men is gonna help his friend by being his donor.)
