chapter 5: Fear of death

He woke up the next morning feeling slightly better and he could finally relax. Though the sicknesses still gripped him firmly, he was able to enjoy his passtime of playing the violin. He made beautiful music. But he was worried about his life.

"Its been so long since I've heard music from this thing." He thought as he played one of the many songs he learned to play when he was younger; "I wonder how many more times I'll hear it before I die?" As he continued playing, he sensed someone in the house (a/n don't ask me how but in the show he did the same thing in season one episode 2) and stopped. He looked up from his music sheets and saw Shancai. Her light footsteps gave her away. Just like in school she caught him playing just like when they first met.

"You still play beautifully Lei." she replied smiling. Lei just simplyed looked at her.

"What are you doing here? Not that I mind." he asked.

"I simply wanted to check on you. We're all worried." she explained.

"Thank you. I could use all the friends I have right now." he replied. Suddenly he was overwhelmed by pain. He needed to lay down. She helped him back to his bedroom and sat at his bedside. Knowing he was in great pain, she wanted to voice her worries. She did not want to leave him alone.

"Are you alright Lei?" she asked looking worried.

"No, the pain is back. I don't think I can hold out much longer." he replied looking at his friend with a pained expression.

"Don't worry, I'm not leaving you." She replied determined of not leaving her friend's side.

"Shancai," He began as he looked at her, "I don't want you to see me go through this much pain."

"Whether you like it or not Lei, I'm staying." she replied.

"Stubborn as always, but I welcome your company." he replied.

"Good, because you would-be gotten it anyways." She replied looking at him.

"It's good to know that you will always have my back." he replied with a small smile. Lei was resting. Trapped in bed, he had sometime to think there with one of his friends. Soon someone knocked on the door. Shancai left him to answer it. He was quite scared but He couldn't tell her. He didn't want his friend the true death of his fears.

"Man this really sucks. I have to stay in this bed. I wonder who that could be?" he thought as he heard the knock. She quickly returned with Xi-Men. He was happy to see his friend even if it was for a little while. He had no doubt that Ah-Si and Mei-Zuo would soon follow. He would've like to see them. He legitimately needed his friends now. He didn't want to be alone.

"How are you holding up Lei?" Xi-Men asked clearly worried about his friend.

"I'm feeling a little weak today," Lei began then looked at Xi-Men and smiled, "but I still look better then you." he joked.

"Ever quite the jokester." Xi-Men replied chuckling at the last statement. He was happy that Lei was still joking even under the circumstances.

"Yea," Lei replied chuckling as well, "but I'm glad you're here." to their surprise, Ah-Si and Mei-Zuo walked into the room. They had seen to let themselves in. They quickly looked at Lei who was in bed. It was something they didn't expect. Even though he was sick, he use to have so much energy, and now this is what he could muster.

"His condition looks pretty bad. What's going on?" Ah-Si asked clearly worried.

"I don't know. One second, He was playing the violin, the the next second he got tired and weak." Shancai replied looking at him.

"He needs a doctor, or something to at least to ease off his pain." Ah-Si replied. Suddenly while laying in the bed, Lei started withering in pain. He seemed as though he was ready to cry or scream in agony.

"It's ok Lei, Ah-Si's gonna get your painkillers and then maybe you can relax." Mei-Zuo replied looking at his ill friend. Without a thought, Ah-Si began to riffle through Lei's drawers to search for his medicine.

"Where are they?" Ah-Si thought until he found them, "here they are. I hope these work, I hate seeing my friend suffer like this."
Shortly after bringing it with a cup of water to His now mute friend. Lei took the medicine he thanked him but he also wanted to rest.

"Thank you," Lei began after taking his painkillers, "You don't know what kind of pain I'm in now."

"Yea we do, which is worse." Ah-Si replied looking at his friend.

"Why do you help me this way dude?" Lei questioned looking at him.

"We're buddies and I refuse to let you suffer like this." He replied looking at him. Soon the medication kicked in and Lei fell into a dream less slumber.

His friends surrounded him looking very concerned. They all seemed serious. It was more then worry, they feel for him. It was a type of shared pain, that one will feel for their family. They left his room to go into the living room to talk.

"I'm getting worried about him." Shancai said looking at all of them after sitting next to her husband Ah-Si on the couch.

"We're all worried about him," Mei-Zuo replied after sitting down next to Xi-Men and shifting his position; "no one should have to go through this, especially Lei."

"Yeah, but it's Lei," Xi-Men replied before sighing; "He'll be fine, he's a fighter."

"That maybe true, but even he can't take much more." Ah-Si replied looking at them, "I mean did you guys see how much he wanted to scream before?"

"So what so we do?" Shancai questioned.

"We pray." Mei-Zuo stated

"I suppose that's all we can do." Xi-Men replied.

"I wish there was something else we can do, something more helpful." Ah-Si stated as all of them sat there, thinking of what they could do.

"Guys I have a idea." Xi-Men replied breaking the silence as the other three looked at him.

"What is it Xi-Men?" Mei-Zuo asked looking at him.

"Well," Xi-Men began; "medication is always getting better right?"

"Yeah, but how is that gonna help him?" Shancai questioned looking at him, "There is only one percent chance he'll live though this "

"Why don't we see if we can find anything on the internet to help him?" Xi-Men questioned looking at them to see if they'll agree.

"That's a great idea." Ah-Si replied as the other two nodded their heads agreeing. They set to work. They separated that night leaving Lei's house with full intentions of coming back with a solution to help him. They next day at work all of them room time to search the internet scouring it for information that could save their dying friend. Finally Ah-Si found something. He decided to call Xi-Men before reconveing at Lei's house.

"Hey Xi-Men, I found something that might help Lei." Ah-Si replied looking at his computer screen at what he found

"What is it?" Xi-Men questioned before stoping his search.

"I'll tell you all when we get to Lei's place." He replied packing up his papers.

"Are you sure you want to tell Lei?" Xi-Men questioned before closing his laptop and packing it up; "I don't want to get his hopes up."

"It maybe getting his hopes up," Ah-Si replied also closing his laptop and clocking out and going to Shancai's office to go tell her what he had found and so they can meet Mei-Zuo and Xi-Men at Lei's house; "but its hopes he needs none the less."

"I agree," Xi-Men began also packing up and clocking out and going to his car to call up Mei-Zuo so they can meet Ah-Si and Shancai at Lei's house as well; "I'll call Mei-Zuo and we'll meet you and Shancai there. Bye."

"Alright bye." Ah-Si replied before hanging up the call. They went back to Lei's house later that night to find him on the couch after being bedridden most of the day. While they were glad to see their friend up and moving, they knew his time was short and they needed to solve his problem now.

"Hi guys," Lei began before coughing. "Sorry if I don't seem like I'm up for much of a chat."

"Don't worry about that for now." Ah-Si replied looking at him; "Trust me when I say that."

"We may had found a solution to your problem." Xi-Men replied

"How can that be possible?" Lei questioned looking at him.

"Just trust us Lei." Mei-Zuo replied.

"Ok, what could be so worth it, that you would call me out like this?" He asked his friends.

"As stated before, we may have found a solution to your pain." Mei-Zuo stated.

"I already have enough painkillers." Lei stated.

"Oh we know," Mei-Zuo replied looking at him before joking, "and we are sick of seeing you zombied out."

"Get to the point guys." Lei replied clearly annoyed that they are taking to long to tell him what they needed to tell him.

"Ah-Si found a surgery that might help you." Mei-Zuo replied looking at him.

"Which is?" Lei questioned looking at Ah-Si for a answer.

"It's a operation to remove the infection from your liver " he replied.

"How is that even possible?!" Lei replied in total shock of what his friend just said.

"It's not easy to explain it," Ah-Si began before taking a deep breath before continuing; "what they are going to do is take that part of your liver that is infected out."

"Well if it's gonna save my life, then I'll do it." Lei decied looking at his friends. "I'll talk to my doctor about it."

"I'm so glad that you decided to do it." Shancai replied happily looking at him, "I don't want to loose one of my best friends."

"I don't want to loose you guys either." Lei replied.
