(03) lookouts and stakeouts
There were always good things to do on Saturday nights. Order your favourite take-out, curl up with your favourite book or watch a movie. There were much better things that Skylar could be doing on a Saturday night. Much better things.
And yet...she was stuck on a roof with Jason Todd. They were tailing the drug dealer Jason had told her about. Someone who she had nearly taken down at one point, but hadn't managed to put him away. The only thing that she had done was give him a scar. And now that Jason had revealed to her that the drug dealer might also be one of Scarecrow's suppliers, she had immediately said yes.
Skylar strongly regretted that.
"Are you sure this is the right place?" She looked at him. (That red helmet was a freaking eyesore.)
Jason's reply was full of snark. "It is. I tailed the guy here last week when he was picking up his shipment."
The building opposite them was an abandoned warehouse. Seriously, what was with villains and warehouses? The hideout was far too cliched. But it was just that that made it easier to find it.
"So are we gonna make a move or what? Or are we going to just sit here and enjoy the night sky?" Skylar asked sarcastically.
Jason looked at her. She could feel him rolling his eyes beneath his helmet. "We'll make a move when it's safe to make a move. Who knows when the guy's come and how many people he's gonna come with?"
"You're being smart. How are you being smart?"
"I'm always smart."
This time, Skylar rolled her eyes. "Let's just get back to work."
An hour later, she realised the waiting was pointless. The guy was not showing up. Jason wasn't budging though. If it were up to him, he'd probably stay up on the roof all night.
Wait-he wasn't actually planning that, was he?
"He's not gonna show up today, Red," Skylar told him. She stood up, stretching her arms. Across them, the warehouses showed no signs of movement. Not even her slightly enhanced senses were picking up on anything. Skylar tapped her wrist to check the time. 1:30 AM. Yeah, no one was going to show up now.
"You can go if you want, but I'm gonna stay," Jason answered, sitting cross-legged on the rooftop. It was quite easy to tell by his body language that he was getting bored. Stubborn brat.
"It's 1:30 in the morning. The guy's smart enough to not show up when the whole city's practically dead asleep. Any amount of noise will cut through the silence and will drag people's attention to it. Do you think he's really going to come out in the silence? Nope. The guy likes to take advantage of the noise of the city."
Skylar pointed around. The city was dead silent except for the chirping of insects and ominously blinking street lights down the road. "Any commotion will grab the GCPD and Batsy's attention. And trust me, I don't think good old Batsy will like that we haven't told him about this case."
"It's none of his business," Jason snapped. "I'll take over it. You can leave if you can't handle the waiting."
"Oh, I can handle the waiting. The question is, can you?" She answered.
"Unlike you, I happen to be patient."
Skylar scoffed. Patience and Jason Todd were two words that did not belong in the same sentence. She stretched her arms again. "Well, you stay here on the roof. I have work in the morning. Just let me know what you find."
She walked to the other side of the roof, feeling Jason's eyes on her. She placed one foot on the edge and the other against the ground. Turning around, she said, "I'll see you later. Bye, Red."
"What are you doing?" There was a hint of curiosity in his voice. Hmm. Interesting.
Skylar tugged off her mask and smirked at him. "What do you think?"
Then, she jumped off the roof. The wind rushed past her. Within seconds she was on the ground, landing with a thud. One hand in front of her for support and the other in the air to steady her. The perfect landing. And without breaking a single bone too. Super strength was quite useful.
Skylar fake-smiled as wide as she could. This bride...three times she had asked for changes in the flower arrangement. Three freaking times. Which meant a waste of many different pages of Skylar's sketchbook. But the final arrangement had been confirmed and Skylar could breathe a sigh of relief.
She almost collapsed as she sat back on her stool. The flower store was finally less busy. Most of the workers and Mrs Brown were scattered around the shop, making sure the flowers looked fresh. Skylar was working on more drawings and more sample flower arrangements.
The bell rang as the door opened, but Skylar didn't pay attention. One of the other works could handle it. She was not in the mood to deal with more customers today. If she had to deal with another rude person today she was going to punch a wall. On top of that, she and Jason were going to continue to surveil the warehouse tonight. She was on the verge of snapping.
Something good better happen today.
And as though someday had heard the thought that just passed in her brain, she heard the gurgling laugh of a young kid. Quite contrary to what people thought about her, Skylar loved kids. They were cute and their laughter somehow miraculously made her feel better. Though her mother had tried, her life hadn't been as filled with a lot of laughter. But she couldn't hate her mother for that. Her poor mother had been dealt a shitty hand in life.
Skylar turned around, facing the direction where she had heard the laugh. A young boy, not older than two, was being carried in his mother's arms. She smiled brightly and walked over to them.
"Hi, how may I help you?"
Okay, I don't know if it is just me, but every time I set to write chapter three of any fic that I have worked on, I have such a hard time figuring out what to do with the chapter. This is why this chapter is kinda short. I did want to write some Jason and Skylar scenes, especially of them bantering, so that happened. But I promise the next chapter is going to be longer and hopefully more action-packed as well.
Till then, I hope you all enjoyed reading!! Comments and votes are super appreciated <33
