"Anything new?-" Isabelle asked when she joined us in the Ops Center, where we were all surrounded around a table.

"Nope." I popped the 'p', shaking my head just once, "We tried tracking him together, like we did with Jonathan, but- of course, for some reason it didn't work."

Jace nodded just once, "Magnus's wards are up, Valentine must still be in the city."

Isabelle exhales slow, looking between us, "Thank the Angel for Magnus and the warlocks."

I gave her the side eye, putting a strand of my hair behind my ear, "They didn't raise the wards for us."

"Teams are out doing block by block sweeps throughout the city." Isabelle sighs lightly at my words, "We'll find him."

"Whatever you say-" I turned to walk away.

"Hey-" Jace caught my arm, his voice low so only I could hear, "You doing alright?"

"Never better." I stopped and looked back at him, "My brother's dead and I'm at the verge of stripping my father from his biggest dream, I feel- amazing."

Jace exhales slow through his nose, "And what about the fact that you lost a friend and the love of your life doesn't remember who you are?"

I tried to pull my arm from his grasp, "Doing great on those things too, thanks-"

"Zee-" Jace pulled back, leaning towards me, his voice low, "He's starting to figure it out."

I go silent, staring up at him.

"He told me how he felt like you were lying to him- about the two of you knowing each other-" Jace said to me, "That he'll get senses of- deja vu- and-"

"Aerial sensors-" Alec said when the alarms started to blaring loudly, making us end our conversation and head to the monitors.

Clary asks, "Is it Valentine?-"

"No-" Isabelle replies, as we were all already on the move, "Could be some kind of wraith demon."

-

"Where is it?-" Jace asked out loud when we were in the middle of the intersection, our weapons out and reading, our backs touching as we huddled together.

Alec looks up, "It should be right on top of us-"

"Alec!-" Jace called out quickly when he spotted the flying demon in the air, circling around the buildings.

Isabelle exhales, "I've never seen a demon like that-"

"On your six!-" I shout, as we all moved in sync, looking around for the demon that kept disappearing.

Isabelle asks, "Can you see it?-"

"What the hell is it waiting for?-" Clary looks around.

Alec replies, "It's coming around for another pass-"

"Alec, twelve o'clock!-" I immediately shout when the demon was heading for us straight for us.

"I got this." Alec held his position, before pulling back on his arrow and firing at the demon, killing it.

I breathe out, "Nice-"

"Thanks-" Alec locks eyes with me.

For a few moments, we kept eye contact, an overwhelming feeling rushing through my veins, making it too much for me, as I quickly broke the connection, my head snapping towards the car beeping and the demons starting to split up.

They were too fast for us to take charge at, Clary shouting, "They're splitting up!"

-

"At least four demons are still unaccounted for." Alec walked as we were all right behind him, "Notify all available personnel."

"What's wrong?" Jace asked Clary when she hung up, "Is everything okay?"

"That was Luke." Clary exhales, looking between us, "Valentine's on his way to Idris."

My head snaps toward her, "What?-"

"How?-" Isabelle asked.

"He made a deal with the Seelie Queen." Clary put her phone away, "Luke's warned all the other Downworld leaders."

Jace mutters, "Damn Valentine-"

"If Valentine gets to that lake-" Isabelle began.

"He won't." Alec cut her off, "Malachi's army is armed and waiting for him-"

"Consul Malachi?" I looked up, "Well, then we have to make it over there-"

Alec looks at me, "Why?-"

"My Dad's so close to achieving what he's always wanted- you don't think the people that were in league with him won't rise with him?" I looked up at him, "Malachi's a Circle member- we shouldn't take any chances."

"What?" Jace looks at me, "No he's not."

"Yeah he is." I shot him a look.

Alec shook his head, "No he's not-"

"I'm an expert in all things Valentine- if I say he is, then he is." I looked between the two, speaking without realizing, "The only reason I didn't know about your parents were members was because they were pardoned-"

I immediately pursed my lips when I realized what I had said, Alec staring at me, "How do you know about that?-"

"I-" Jace immediately blurts out to my rescue, "I- kind of- filled her in about all of that a little while ago-"

I quickly continued so Alec couldn't question, "Look, I don't really- care, if you believe me or not- but, regardless, we need to get over there."

"If we lower the wards, these demons can get out." Isabelle said, "Spread beyond the city."

"Well, hypothetically- my portal rune could pierce through the wards-" I placed a hand on my hip, "You know, if any of you trust me with your life or anything-"

"Zee and I'll go." Jace nods only once, looking between them, "You three stay here, slay the beasts."

I gave Jace a small smirk, before turning and breathing in, my eyes starting to glow, opening the portal while Jace and Alec traded a few words, as we went right through without hesitation.

When we came out the other side, I scoff lightly, "Hey, we're not dead-"

"Maybe- but, we're still a hike away from Lake Lyn." Jace points out, "Come on- we need to hurry- we can't let Valentine reach the lake."

-

"Consul Malachi." Jace came to a stop when we reached the camp, "Jace Herondale of the New York Institute."

I had my hands behind my back, "Zee Young."

"I know who you are." He looks between us.

"Valentine is on his way to Lake Lyn." Jace stares, "He has the Sword and the Cup."

Consul Malachi stares at the both of us, "Yes, I'm quite aware of Valentine's progress."

"Wait for it." I quietly muttered under my breath to Jace, my eyes glued to Consul Malachi.

"We need to get to the water." Jace ignored me.

As if on cue, Consul Malachi nods to his men, his Circle rune showing, "Now- I'm afraid that's not gonna happen."

"You're a Circle member!-" Jace's eyes widen, guards grabbing the both of us, as I clenched my jaw and glared at Jace, before they pulled us both into the tent, "Get off me!-"

-

"So, I'm gonna just cut to the chase." I began, letting out a throaty laugh, as we were both chained up to one of the pillars in the tent, our backs facing each other, "I told you so."

I could almost see Jace's grimace in the silence, before he spoke, "Do you have any idea how many speeches I've heard Malachi give? How many times I've heard him preach loyalty to Clave above all else under the Angel? And all along he's- he's been working with our greatest enemy."

"It doesn't take a genius to figure out why." I blinked once, turning my head, "Valentine threatened to wipe out any Shadowhunters who opposed him- Malachi's just trying to save his own ass."

Speaking of the devil, Malachi slowly walked in, Jace looking up at him, "How could you side with him?"

"There is only one side- the side of the angels." He looks between us, "Valentine is only doing what the Clave has been trying to accomplish for centuries: eradicate demons."

I scoff, "That's amusing, because- I don't think the angels would be in favor of mass genocide, but- whatever helps you sleep at night-"

"You know, I'm quite shocked that his own daughter- isn't even on the right side." Consul Malachi crouched in front of me, "When Raziel created the first Shadowhunter, there was no such thing as Downworlders- but, over the centuries, disgusting half-breeds emerged- warlocks, vampires, seelies, werewolves, they banded together, grew more powerful."

"What, you're going to give me a history lesson?" I clenched my jaw, "I'm not interested-"

"You should be." Consul Malachi raises his voice at me, "Finally they will be destroyed- and so will you."

-

I grunted when I was thrown to the ground, my wrists in chains, as I was pushed against the stump of a tree, a boot on my back as I tried to fight their grip, but it was no use.

"It's gonna be okay-" Jace assured me in a quiet whisper when they brought an axe toward me.

I didn't say anything, my eyes locking with his for a minute, before hearing Consul Malachi exhale, "Your father won't approve- but, he'll understand your deaths were a necessary sacrifice-"

"You're gonna regret this-" I grit my teeth as they forced my head against the stump, making me grunt.

"We'll see about that-" Consul Malachi took a step back, "Proceed!-"

Jace's voice shout filled my ears, "No!-"

I squeezed my eyes shut, hoping that a miracle blast would come save the day when I felt the sharp blade at the back of my neck, as they brought it up again to actual hold straight momentum to kill me.

No blast came.

But, what did come was Jace, his eyes glowing gold when I opened mine at the sound of grunting, as he had broken free of his chains and was fighting off two guards.

The boot that was against my back stepped off at the commotion, making me immediately getting up and spin kick, knocking him to the ground, knocking his face with my foot to knock him right out.

I turned when Jace turned toward me, Jace using the blade he had acquired to break my chains, as I grabbed a seraph blade from the ground and fought off the other two guards, killing them in an instant.

"Wait- please, wait!" Consul Malachi was begging from the ground, a wound in his side when I approached him.

"I hope it was all worth it-" I clenched my jaw, before slitting his throat open, finishing him off.

"Zee-" Jace's voice filled my ears from behind me, making me spin to face him and drop my blade as he rushed toward me, hugging me as quick as I threw my arms around him, "Are you okay? You're okay-"

"I'm okay-" I squeezed him tight, then pulled back, a hand on his arm, my other hand grabbing my kindjals, "Come on, we have to go-"

I walked around Zee's room while she was gone in Idris with Jace, trying to find something that could make sense to me.

I shouldn't have been snooping around her room, but at this point I was desperate.

It made no sense how she made me feel after knowing her for such a short amount of time.

It made no sense having that feeling the moment I laid eyes on her, and it made even less sense that I had never met her before.

There were too many instances where I thought I knew something, or noticed something, and she pushed it away.

Every feeling of deja vu I had felt, happened when I was with her, and that meant she was lying to me.

She was hiding something from me.

And it had everything to do with her.

I just knew it.

I opened up her sketch book on her desk, noticing the first page was a drawing of New York City.

One that looked too familiar.

I swear I had seen it before.

I swallowed hard, leaving the book opened, walking towards her closet and opening the doors, noticing a green shirt hung up.

I couldn't put my finger on where I had it.

Then my eyes fell onto a red dress.

And I was almost positive I had seen it before.

I could just picture her wearing it.

And that lead me out of her room and right for the Ceremonial Hall, as I went right with my gut feeling.

I was messing with the bracelet on my wrist.

I didn't even wear bracelets.

I slowly entered, looking around at the empty space.

I don't know what I expected to find here.

I walked up the aisle, looking around as if I looked harder, I'd find something, sighing through my nose.

I stepped onto the higher platform, looking out at the doors, and that's what it all clicked.

My eyes widened when I could see Zee running in, all dolled up in the red dress I had found in her closet, her eyes begging for me to choose her instead of Lydia.

I groaned in pain and immediately gripped my head, crouching, memories of her and I together flooding my mind.

Rushing down the aisle to kiss her.

Giving her the necklace she wore every day.

Telling me she loved me out in the rain.

Knowing her coffee order by heart.

The green shirt I had given her.

The sketch of New York City in her notebook she drew a few days after she had arrived here.

Her using my bow and quiver to shoot at the Forsaken that had broke into the Institute.

Her giving me this bracelet.

And her taking those memories away from me.

[ zee's pov ]

"Are we too late?-" asked Jace when we rushed over to Lake Lyn as quick as we could, the night having fallen above us, "Is he here?-"

"No, if he'd raised the Angel, we'd know it-" I slowly came to a stop, looking around, breathing heavily, "We beat him here-"

Jace's shout suddenly filled my ears, "Zee!-"

A hand gripped my arm, spinning me around to face him, my eyes widening when I saw my father, and a small blade coming right for my heart, until Jace got right between us and took it for me.

A gasp left my lips, my eyes widening, Valentine being caught off guard as well when Jace fell, my voice low and broken, "Jace?-"

Valentine took a few steps back, swallowing hard, watching as I fell to my knees by Jace, putting my hand over his wound, tears almost immediately filling my eyes, even if I tried so hard to hold them back.

Jace put a hand over mine, his voice low and raspy, as he was bleeding out, "Hey- hey,"

"You got in my way." My voice broke, tears falling.

"He was going to kill you-" Jace squeezed my hand lightly, tears burning in his own eyes from seeing me cry, "Rather it be me than you-"

"He killed my mom- I can't lose you to him, too-" I couldn't hold back my quiet sobs, "Please, just- hang on- alright- let me get my stele-"

Jace didn't let me move, "I'm not going to make it."

"You have to- you have to, please-" I was pleading, starting to cry harder, "Please, you can't go this way-"

"I love you-" Jace's voice faded, before his eyes closed completely, taking his last breath.

"Jace-" I shook him once, my bloody hands gripping his arms and shaking him, my screams and cries getting louder, "Jace!-"

I couldn't stop the pain I felt in my chest, until something hit my head, everything going black.

-

My eyes opened, greeted with soreness from the crying and a head filled with pain, making me slowly sit up, noticing the chains on my wrists and ankles.

I looked at Jace's dead body, my heart shattering at the sight, "Ave atque vale."

I looked ahead to see Valentine with the Soul Sword and the Mortal Cup in his hands, walking toward the lake, making me shout, "No!-"

He stops and looks at me, "Good, you're awake- just in time to see history being made."

"You killed Jace-" I stared at him, tears starting to burn in my eyes, "You watched as he took his last breath-"

"It was meant to be you- I was positive you would have been able to stop me if I hadn't killed you, but-" Valentine exhales slow, "I doubt you'll be strong enough to stop me now, now that you've just lost your best friend-"

Tears fell quickly, "You heartless, son of a bitch-"

"Jace and your mother's deaths. their deaths were necessary sacrifices, if I'm going to save humanity." Valentine walked toward the Lake, "Today, I will honor them-"

"Honor?" I raised my voice, "This is far from honor-"

"I wanted you to join me!" Valentine turned to look at me one last time, "To feel this glory- because you are not Zee Young, you are Zee Morgenstern-"

I didn't reply to this.

"But, if this is not your wish- you might as well just die along with the rest of them-" Valentine's eyes filled with small tears for just a moment, before dropping the two instruments into the lake.

"Raziel, hear me!" shouted Valentine, "I call upon the Mortal Instruments and summon you into this mortal realm!"

Raziel raised from the waters, lighting up the entire land, "It has been a thousand years since I was last summoned to this place- why do you summon me now, Nephilim?"

Valentine breathes out, "My Lord Raziel, the great men and women in the lineage of Shadowhunters, which you have created here, have failed in their mission to rid this world of demon scum."

"I see you are impatient." Raziel notices, "What is it you ask of me?-"

"The immediate death of all evil-blooded creatures, demon and Downworlder alike, as well as the disloyal Shadowhunters who protect them." Valentine's words made a familiar rush run through my veins, the rush of when my abilities were about to come into play.

"The destruction of the souled creatures of the Downworld, and of our own Nephilim?-" Raziel repeats, "That is not Heaven's wish."

Valentine breathes, "What?-"

"But- thou who spills thy blood thou shalt compel from me an action." Raziel said, as Valentine pulled out a small blade to do exactly what he asked.

Right then and there, my eyes started to glow, as I broke the chains I was held in, immediately grabbing him and throwing him onto the ground before he could.

I grabbed my kindjals from the ground, stabbing both right into his side without hesitation, making him let out a small scream in pain.

I snatched the small blade and rushed to the water, cutting my palm open and letting the blood fall into the lake, Raziel raising once more, "Angel-blooded one-"

"I don't want Downworlders to die!" I immediately shouted in panic, "Please, you can't let them die! I want another wish-"

"You may compel me to one action, Zee Morgenstern-" Raziel said to me, "What is it that you ask? If you have a desire, ask me now- and be wise, I will grant but one."

I looked back at Valentine, who was grunting, pulling my kindjals out of himself slowly, looking at me, breathing heavily, "Don't you dare!-"

I looked at Jace's dead body.

The consequences would be fatal.

But, it was alright.

"Bring Jace back." I gave Valentine a small smirk, knowing I was taking away everything he had worked for, "Bring him back."

Raziel was silent for a few moments, then disappeared, Valentine screaming from behind me, "What have you done?-"

"You foolish girl!" He grabs me and threw me to the ground hard, making me grunt when I hit the ground, "You ruined everything- my life's work!"

My jaw clenched, forcing myself up, pulling off my jacket and tossing it to the side, grabbing my kindjals from the ground, "After everything you've done, you don't deserve a drop of the glory you would've gotten from that-"

Valentine pulled his seraph blade out, his blades clashing with mine, the both of us throwing ourselves at each other even harder than we had ever before.

My scream echoed when he threw me to the ground after a few rounds, my head bleeding, bruises all around my body, blood dripping from my mouth.

I grit my teeth, grabbing one kindjal from the ground, kicking his blade out his hand, then stabbing mine right through him, my hand on his shoulder, "Tell me, father-"

"How does it feel to be so close to achieving greatness-" I pushed the blade farther into him, "Only for me to rip it away from you?-"

"Must suck, right?" I kneeled him in the face.

"How could you do this to me?" Valentine grunted lightly as I tortured him, "I'm your father-"

"I have lost- too much to you- I have sacrificed, too much- for you to have this." I grabbed my other kindjal and stabbed it through him, "I am not that generous-"

Valentine stares at me, tears burning in his eyes from the pain I was inflicting on him.

"You were right about one thing- I am Zee Morgenstern." I pulled out one kindjal and stabbed him again, "Zee Morgenstern has no remorse- Zee Morgenstern is a cold blooded, heartless killing machine, that wouldn't even give a damn about having her own father's blood in her hands."

"If I'm going-" Valentine grabbed his blade and pierced it right through me, "You're going with me."

I grunted, coughing immediately at the action, before pulling out a kindjal and slitting his throat, killing him right then and there.

I stumbled back, pulling the blade out of myself, coughing up blood, falling onto the ground.

He had stabbed me right where I stabbed Sebastian.

The spot on someone's back that drives a blade right through them and their heart, killing them almost instantly.

I was with him.

Til the bitter end.

[ third person pov ]

"No, no, no-" Alec's broken whisper sounded when all the anger that washed away from him when he saw Zee's dead body on the ground a few feet away from her father, Jace stood where he once laid, staring at the corpse of his dead best friend.

Jace knew he had died, and he had no idea how he had come back, but he knew it had something to do with her.

Alec couldn't even think about how he felt when he lost Jace, and there he was standing, very much alive, with no explanation, because all that mattered to him was Zee.

Isabelle had a hand over where her parabatai rune once was, uncontrollable tears falling from his eyes, leaning into Clary's comfortable as the poor girls cried over the loss of a woman that meant too much to them.

Magnus was frozen where he stood, a tear streaming down his face, tons of regret and guilt filling within him, that he hadn't ended their argument sooner.

That he hadn't fixed things earlier, because they wouldn't have ended things off the way they did.

Alec fell to his knees by her dead body, putting his head against her chest, listening for her heartbeat.

Nothing.

"Zee, no-" Alec could feel tears start to burn in his eyes, pushing some of her hair out of her beat up face, "Zee- I remember- I remember everything-"

"You can't go now- because, I remember- all of it, every moment- every second- I remember it all-" Alec felt himself choke up, "I need to- tell you that I love you with- my whole heart- and that- it's okay- I'm not upset- you need to know- you- that's why you need to come back- come back-"

"This is what you've been fighting for-" Alec's tears fell, "Your happy ending- you beat him, Zee- this is supposed to be your happy ending, it isn't supposed to end like this- we're supposed to be happy- you won- you won the fight- you eliminated Valentine- and Jonathan- you saved us all- you're supposed to get your happy ending- with all of us-"

"So, you can't go now-" Alec held her limp hand tightly in both of his, raising his voice, hoping that she could hear him, "Zee, you can't go!-"

Alec started to do chest compressions, hoping that it was simulate a heart beat, "Come on, Zee- come on- come back to me-"

Isabelle began to say through her sobs, "Alec-"

"No, Isabelle- it's okay- she's gonna be fine-" Alec was trying to convince himself, "She just- she'll hear me- she'll come back- she's strong, she can do it-"

"Zee-" Alec tried to listen for her heart beat again, only to get nothing, making his sobs escape his lips, "Please don't leave me-"

Alec's broken sobs were sounding the silence, as all his friends watched as he mourned over his dead lover.

That was until Isabelle gasped at the burning where her parabatai rune would be, immediately pulling up her shirt to see it start to fade back in, "Alec-"

Clary notices, "Alec, Isabelle's rune-"

Alec lifts his head up, his eyes widening when he watched gold start to shine from under Zee's shirt and through the tips, the wounds that Valentine had left on her starting to heal themselves.

Moments later, Zee gasped for air, her eyes opening, glowing bright gold, before slowly fading back to her normal color, the first thing her eyes landing on being Alec.

"Hi-" Alec sniffled, the tears in his eyes not being able to stop falling, "I'm here- I'm here- I remember-"

Zee's voice came out low and raspy, her eyes widening slow, "You remember?-"

"I remember-" Alec didn't say anything else, and just pulled her into his embrace, holding her tightly, as the others surrounded them, all relieved that she was back.

-

[ zee's pov ]

"To the Downworld!" Luke popped a bottle of champagne at the Hunters Moon as we all gathered in celebration as we all cheered after his chants, "To the Shadowhunters!"

Everyone held up their glasses, as Isabelle grabbed my hand, giving me a soft smile, "How are you?"

"I'm doing okay-" I softly smiled back at her, tilting my head lightly, "How are you?"

"Glad you're not dead." Isabelle's words made us both burst out into a small fit of laughter, as she wrapped her arm around me, "Don't know what I'd do without you-"

"Don't worry- the feeling's mutual." I leaned my head against hers, "I can't imagine how you felt when our rune disappeared."

"All that matters is that you're back." Isabelle squeezes me tight, before letting go, gesturing behind me, "I'll see you later-"

I looked back, seeing Jace looking at me from the bar, as I slowly walked over to him, setting down my drink, hugging him from behind, "Guess now we're even then."

"Seeing each other dead? Yeah- sure." Jace looked at him, leaning into my embrace slightly, "You made the wish for me, didn't you?"

"I did." I quietly admitted, nodding lightly, "It was better to use the wish on bringing you back than killing an entire kind, so- I kinda went with the best option-"

"Thank you." Jace reaches and pulls me into a hug instead, "Let's keep it between us- okay?"

I nodded just lightly, knowing exactly what he meant, before he gestured to Magnus, who was walking towards us.

I softly smiled when I realized he was coming towards me, walking over to him, "Magnus, hi-"

"Hello, biscuit-" Magnus put a hand on my shoulder, squeezing it, "I just wanted to know if-"

"Please do not ask me if I'm okay, I'm trying to act like I did not just die and come back to life-" I blurted out, putting a hand on his arm, "I promise- I'm okay."

Magnus sighed through his nose and pulled me into him for a hug, squeezing me tight, "I'm sorry."

"What?" I look up, hugging back, "Why?"

"I shouldn't have left things with you the way I did- and I want you to know that I'm okay now." Magnus slowly pulled back, "If you'll take me, I'd love to-"

I didn't let him finish, "Me too."

Magnus smiles, before both our attention is caught when Alec had walked over to us, making my heart stop.

Magnus took the hint, walking away from us quickly, "I'll give you two a minute-"

Alec had his hands behind his back, "You look like you got your energy back-"

"Well, sure- tequila does wonders." I looked up at him, feeling my heart race, "I, uhm- any signs of the demons?"

"None- sensor maps are completely clear of wraith demons." Alec shook his head, "It's the strangest thing- it's like they disappeared into thin air."

I purse my lips, "Weird."

"Can we talk?" Alec quietly asked.

I barely nodded, following him outside into the alley, speaking the moment we stepped outside, "Alec, I'm so sorry-"

"Zee-" Alec tried to stop me from going further.

"No, please- listen to me- let me get this out first." I started to mess with my hands, "I thought- I was doing the right thing- I panicked when I found out that Jonathan was still alive, and I acted impulsively, and that was the- biggest mistake I've ever made-"

"I had no right to take your memories of you and I from you, and I realize now that, no matter how much I wanted to assure that I wouldn't lose any one of you during this, thinking that pain and anger pushed me to be the best- those were never my motivators-" I said, "What motivated me was you remembering me- and keeping you all safe from harm- I realize now that you guys are my strength, not my weakness and I am sorry that I didn't realize that sooner-"

Alec stares at me, small tears in his eyes, his voice vulnerable, "That doesn't mean I get to lose you."

I went silent, staring at him.

"You fought until your last breath, Zee-" Alec took a step closer to me, "I found your dead body-"

"I was upset- when I found out, but- I realized- that anger doesn't match the feeling I felt when I thought I had lost you for good." A tear fell from his eye, "I don't want to spend time hating you for something you did with good intentions after thinking I lost you."

"You didn't do it to hurt me, you did it to try and protect me- and that's enough for me." Alec breathes slow, "After today- after what happened, I don't think I can live without you."

I could feel my eyes start to pool with tears watching him cry, "I can't live without you either."

Alec couldn't say anything else, walking towards me and grabbing my face, pressing his lips into mine, pulling me as close as he could.
